Wait, Grump is actually Not So Grump!?!
@danielgehring74376 жыл бұрын
Let's not kid ourselves, there's a wide difference between Arin ~saying~ he's not an angry person and actually not being an angry person. He gets genuinely upset about things like video game design and Wendy's, he's got a bit of an anger problem whether he wants to believe it or not. Sure would be nice if he would admit his flaws but... that's a long train to wait for.
@Keanine6 жыл бұрын
But there's also a big difference between being angry and being grumpy but playing it up to look like rage. What we see is the persona he has created for the show, not the Arin that his friends and family know.
@danielgehring74376 жыл бұрын
Keanine The 'persona' excuse wears pretty thin after a while. If he really is hiding so much of his true nature behind a facade for as long as he's been doing this show, then that would be a sign of a much deeper, more troubling psychosis, probably psychopathy... and we would all be crazy for preferring to watch that than someone willing to share a bit of themselves in their show. It's not really about whether one is an 'angry' person, either; anger can be a good thing, there are things worth getting angry about. Becoming defensive about being labeled an 'angry person' is where his fault really lies: avoiding anger isn't healthy either. Danny's anecdote about always trying to deflect with humor even when the people he's trying to comfort don't want to be humored is the perfect analogy: if Arin is constantly deflecting with humor or retreat instead of dealing with the angering issues in his life, then he needs to accept the human part of his brain that is trying to make him mad as hell and not going to take it anymore, and deal with that shit! Just letting that stuff fester in his life because he's more scared of labels and letting himself vent on his internet comedy show about how 'not angry' he is is just another passive-aggressive way of passing the buck, not taking responsibility for his failures, letting the bad stuff continue.
@Keanine6 жыл бұрын
Everything you've said is good advice and does make sense if that is the case for him. The only thing about the whole persona thing is that it's not necessarily a choice. I don't do public speaking in the same way that I talk one on one, and I dont talk one on one in the same way I talk to my friends. I have different "personas" for each of these occasions, but they're all still me, I'm just shining a light on different parts of me and playing up certain feelings and emotions. In public speaking Im terrified, but I play up confidence to allow myself to look like I know what I'm doing. When Im with friends is when Im the most raw and the most "me" I'm not saying that there's nothing wrong, I'm just saying we don't know because we are seeing a side of Arin that he wants us to see. And god knows I'm not qualified to be telling him there's something wrong based on half the information, let alone if I had all of it.
@danielgehring74376 жыл бұрын
Yes, I get it, I really do. We all have personas, we all put up walls, but over time I've learned that most of those walls are there to protect ourselves, not others; Arin didn't bring up his anger issues because he knew that's what we were all clamoring to hear more about, he brought it up because _he_ wanted to talk about it. He saw what he thought was a problem and chose to deflect back to something safer this time. You brought up public speaking, and perhaps I can help there. I used to be terrified of crowds, too, until I realized that what was very real and very personal to me was not the same thing for them; I observed how I acted in a crowd, realized that if anything, mistakes made me enjoy the speech better, and from then on resolved that if I messed up my public speech I'd steer into the skid, as it were, and not only mess up but mess up spectacularly, hilariously, so badly they'd go home and tell stories of me, and be proud of every fart joke and pratfall I could muster. I don't know how it worked, but it did; just realize that for you it might be the most important thing that ever happened but for everyone else, it's just Tuesday. And no, I have no delusion that my comment is going to change Arin's life. I doubt he'll ever read this and even if he does, well, internet fame has a weird effect on people's egos. I just like to do what I can for the readers out there who might, and who might be going through something similar, tell them that there are different ways of dealing with it than what he did. I've dealt with quite a few people with anger issues in my life, it's a pretty common and can get pretty scary for those around them, so the first step is admitting they have that problem and it isn't out of their control like Arin might seem to think (either for the victims of the issue or the sufferer themselves). When Danny says he's "scared to be in the room" with Arin sometimes, and passes it off as a joke, it strikes a bit too close to home for me, triggers me if you want to use that term, and I don't think I'm the only one.
@ShesAaRebel6 жыл бұрын
I watched a video where they tested sympathy (understanding what someone is feeling) vs empathy (feeling what they are feeling). It reminded me of what Dan was talking about here. They started off by having the volunteers do a survey on their level of happiness and what they are feeling in the moment. Then they lied to one of their volunteers and said that they got a parking ticket. In one group they had the person running the test trying to cheer them up by saying things like, "At least the fine is pretty low!", "You should fight it! That sign was hard to understand!", ect. The other group the person empathized with them, and just got mad and vented with them, "This is bullshit!", "Parking cops are such assholes!" ect. Then they made them take the test again. What they found out was the ones who empathized with the volunteer were a lot happier than the ones who had sympathy. I'm a problem solver. When someone is mad I naturally try and figure out what went wrong, and how to fix it. Or to look on the bright side, kind of like what Dan said he does. What this test showed me though is that is not what people need. So I'm trying to empathize more to start out with, and then give my advice when I think they have cooled down. A lot of times by just waiting a bit, eventually I hear, "So what should I do?". It's all about actually listening.

I'm here because Arin has this autopilot mode he goes into when he thinks the whole episode is just him failing and when that happens it's really, really funny. I don't want to see him fail, per se, I just have noticed the correlation between his failures at the game and his ability/desire to entertain his audience to distract them from it.

I've adopted Arin's style of "play rage" when I play video games, or really any kind of games. I used to really let shit get to me, but these past couple of years, I've become somewhat notorious for doing and saying the weirdest things when I get frustrated at a game, or start losing or whatever. And it really helps. I find when I get frustrated, sometimes spitting out a quick, "Fuck!" can be cathartic, but you can also get a lot of mileage out off making a weird noise and saying, "Shit on a shingle!" It immediately lightens my mood, especially when I'm around others and actual anger isn't something I want or need to be showing. This episode made me realize that this channel is where I picked that up

I meant my response for Stockicide in that "Especially Brian!" as a joke. But no we knew what you meant, I think we were both just crackin da jooks.

Absolutely love the direct contrast from Dan at 15:50 “Oh yeah Arin!!!” and at 16:07 “Oh Arin” after realizing most of this episode was spent failing at something he could’ve easily done lol

Arin seems to always have this problem that he has the solution and will REFUSE anything else even though the thing he's trying continuously fails, because it partially worked one time, it has been especially apparent in Majora's Mask and this level. I don't know if it's his own fault for that, but I think he should take a second to consider other solutions and take a look around for pieces he's missing.
@k1lljoy5056 жыл бұрын
That's probably accurate, I never want to blame him for it because I don't know his life

Who know, Maybe we will get another Black Knight moment and they will play it again, Arin will not get though it completely though so hope for just the ending.

Watching Game Grumps is an excercise of patience with how much Arin struggles to figure out how to do things in videogames. And I mean actually watching, because if you just play GG episodes on the side while playing a game by yourself or getting work done it's a joy to listen to them, their stories, their train of thought, and the wisdom they both have gathered through their life. Anyway, I love em, they have been part of my daily entertainment for fucking years.

It's interesting to see how calm, well an angry calm Arin is when he keeps dying in this playthrough. And I feel the same as Dan with having the nature to help others.

At 15:48 Arin's realization that he was doing things the hard way 😁
@madamefluffy47886 жыл бұрын
He's probably figured it out by now; but really - the fact Arin hasn't figured out that the bat boss in Majora's Mask just requires light arrows and some dodging to avoid massive damage leaves me astounded. (killing the bats will get him some magic jars/arrows when his magic meter/arrows deplete, and a larger magic meter also helps - but that would require him going back and gathering all the fairies from - the swamp temple, I think?)

He could just block the scythe with his shield, he even did it once, then stopped doing it
@literallywhy61626 жыл бұрын
Usually Arin gets bosses pretty ok too. Like, he calls a whole game garbage and can’t do puzzles but then he gets to a fight and either rocks it or at least understands what he has to do. That’s why Arin not getting that boss is so weird
@madamefluffy47886 жыл бұрын
I wouldn't be surprised if he wasn't aware he deflected the blow with his shield (he probably mashed buttons out of desperation and hoped for the best). The boy really REALLY needs to improve on his patience/strategies. I would spare him so much aggravation if he tried.
@britipinojeff6 жыл бұрын
I'm so pissed that he was all like "Oh well when they were playtesting it there probably wasn't any problems or they all knew about it" as if the game designers did a poor job at making the boss. He just sucks at the game like wtf?
@madamefluffy47886 жыл бұрын
britipinojeff - it's not necessarily that he sucks at the game; it's just that he doesn't think things through and just charges in head first (he's mentioned he's got no patience; and it shows in these cases). If he took his time in the fight - waited for an opening before attacking, he'd notice that the light arrows stun the boss and a second does damage (pretty sure it works the same in the original N64 version, and the 3DS version). When the boss brings up his scythe and charges, blade swinging; Arin should know to either get out of the way or put up his shield to deflect the blow. That is most certainly not the time to attack the enemy. I mean - worse comes to worse - he (or Dan) could always look up the walkthrough for the boss, if he finds it that difficult. If Arin gets this annoyed by a fairly easy boss; I can only imagine how he's going to act when he faces Twinmold (which is far easier to beat in the N64 version than in the 3DS version).

I have been following GG since 2013 and the more I see it, especially videos which shows Arnold interacting with others, the more I am convinced that he is a pretty chill dude in general. Video Games can be brutal man, I'm pretty sure basically anyone who watch the show experienced some rage/rage quit from a video game. I surely did.
