Interesting thing is that this game production started after Donkey Kong Country came out (and became hit). Nintendo directors wanted SMB2 to be made with technology they used in Donkey Kong - prerendered 3D models, but Shigero Miyamoto declined this proposal and presented prototype with "crayon" picture. Nintendo was impressed and they allowed Miyamoto to do as he like, without question. And its turned good. Another game they used similar technology was Kirby Dream land on SNES.
@deadfr0g4 жыл бұрын
Huh! That’s actually especially interesting to hear because of how they ended up using exactly that graphical style-pre-rendered 3D-for the N64 sequel, Yoshi’s Story.
@Vednier4 жыл бұрын
@@deadfr0g Well, i think reason is that "N64 is much more powerful". It was great and dangerous time of switching to 3D and probably this time they could not avoid it. Yet, i dont see much sense of 3D in platformers and always felt Yoshi'Story kinda...cheaply looking.

My favourite level from Yoshi's Island is the downhill skiing level because it's such a relaxing and fun time just skiing and not worrying about a thing. That's what I like about Yoshi's Island: it's as if it doesn't take the dangers too seriously and sort of says, '"Meh, you're on an island inhabited my dinosaurs, what's the trouble in that?"
@pablofmc5 жыл бұрын
i saw a .webm in 4chan last year that showed all that skiing section and it made replay the game. It's relaxing if you don't want/have to collect every red coin or flower. Besides, skiing downhill was made all the better by slowly fading out the snow until you were back with the sunny ice mountain weather. That game had style in spades

That statement, "you won't find a game like Yoshi's Island anywhere else" couldn't be more true. Not only is it nothing like any other Mario game, but it really vibrantly stands out against all the later Yoshi-focused games to follow, too. Not just Yoshi's Story, but even Yoshi's Island DS and Yoshi's New Island. DS is the only one that even attempts to recapture this wild and wonderful ultra-cartoony visual style, and not a single one of them really come close to the perfection of balanced and wildly varied gameplay and top-tier level design here. Plus, they ALL opt for that weird, awful, preschooler-tv-show xylophoney soundtrack Yoshi's Story started. Yoshi's Island had one of the catchiest soundtracks to any game ever, even if it was just a handful of songs, so it's ruthlessly disappointing how straight-up nasty the OST's for the other Yoshi games are. Woolly World has its moments, at least, but that's more like a totally different thing that feels like a sequel to Kirby's Epic Yarn with some Yoshi elements thrown in than anything else.

The best review for one of my favorite games! 0:35 I cannot tell you how much my dad wanted to deny this opinion I had about how Nintendo developers found inspiration. LOL This game and DK Country are the same but different for me. Both of them are games I remember watching my Big brother play before I was old enough too. The colors and sounds were so mystifying. I played both games here and there with friends who had a SNES. But, then I really got into them when the GBA releases came out. About 8 or 9 years ago I finally got my own SNES and the rest is history

I loved this game from the start. It's just incredibly imaginative and charming and fun! The mechanics work well, and also it made use of the FX chip and Mode 7 to create insanely cool sprite effects. The crying baby Mario is not a flaw at all! He only cries when you are hit and need to rescue him. It's meant to be annoying and the game rewards you by not blasting the crying sound when you are not hit. In my opinion it's a great and original idea that works perfectly and I'd count it as one big strength of the game rather than a flaw As for the exploration part, I don't think there are a lot of parts where I had to backtrack much or get stuck for too long in any stage of the game, and even when I did, it was a joy and it felt like an entertaining challenge.

To me the coolest thing about Yoshi's Island, is that it kinda marks the moment Nintendo shifted their game design more towards the style they would use for the N64. Much more focus on exploration, aesthetics and atmosphere. The game just drips with the same kind of charm and wonder that made SM64 and OoT so great ... just in 2D.

One cool thing about Yoshi's Island imo is that while most Mario platformers don't have great boss battles (almost unique as something other mainstream platformers usually did better than Mario), Yoshi's Island's boss fights are spectacles-each one a different awesome graphical flex leading to a totally different kind of gameplay challenge. Raphael and Baby Bowser are often discussed as amazing bosses but even early-game bosses like Naval Piranha and the Potted Ghost are super interesting concepts and super fun to look at.

From the moment that i saw it in Nintendo Power and commercials on saturday morning i knew i had to own this game. i did not regret it. 100% my favorite game on the console. I played it so much that i could beat it in just a few house. Later in life i worked in the Apple Store and someone brought in their SNES Classic to play and I remember getting a huge crowd of people when i would play it in the break room. This game has a solid place on my Top 10 Most Perfect Games of All Time. They literally could not have made it any more flawless than it was with the tools they had at the time- no, not even by changing the Baby Mario crying (it's not that big a deal, stop whining and just get him back already). It is simply the most whimsical and charming game on the SNES, technically perfect in every regard, and features some of the most memorable levels and bosses ever.
@reillywalker1954 жыл бұрын
The searching aspect of this game was something I enjoyed. It gave a purpose to exploring every nook and cranny of every level, which made me appreciate the design of each level even more. The item collection based scoring system effectively turned the game into a pioneer of the collectathon subgenre, too, since each collectable did something different and was necessary for achieving 100% completion. Having to defeat every single boss without getting hit is undoubtedly challenging, but it's not impossible, and the fights are fun enough that trying again and again to get that elusive perfect score isn't tedious. That said, I've yet to beat the secret level in World 5, which I daresay is the hardest in the game. If you can, play the Game Boy Advance port of this Super NES gem. While you might not like some of the small changes to the music and sound effects, the fact that it lets you bank extra lives after you turn the game off and has 6 more excellent extra levels to explore makes it totally worth playing.
