Fusion really deserves more love. It's probably the most atmospheric 2D game i've ever played. I felt so vulnerable the whole time and so tense, the game does a fantastic job of keeping you aware of EVERYTHING and making sure you're always prepared for the worst. The only other games that gave me that feeling were Dark Souls and Prime 2. I still prefer Super Metroid, but DAMN Fusion is good!

A lot of people shit on Fusion for having Adam give you orders but they miss the whole point. Fusion is Samus at the weakest she has ever been in all the Metroid series, and a lot of Fusion's story is about bringing Samus back to full power. Not just physically, but also mentally, because at the start of the game you've no freedom, and have the annoying computer giving you orders this way and that way, but as the game progresses and you get stronger, you start to venture out more on your own, into the Restricted Labs, getting the Diffusion Missiles and Plasma Beam and releasing the Red doors without Adam, it's all about rising back up to that point of independence you had in Super. Think about it people.

Nailed it! Samus had always been an absolute unshakable badass. Seeing her being more vulnerable was awesome. She was great before, but Fusion made me truly love the character. It’s Other M that did her wrong, but I ignore that game.

You know what a Fusion hack needs... Random SA-X encounters. Well if you like Fusion there is a hack in development, callled X-Fusion. Wich completely redisignes the BSL, abilities and more stuff ( Terrifying SA-X encounters, more bosses). It really looks nice and runs on a heavily moded Super Metroid Engine(If you can even call it Super Metroid Engine, because its so different).

@theakiwar9118

+fickminne Yes and No. There will be some scripted events with multiple SA-X (kinda like the Xenomorph in A:I) and there will be in some special room segments random encounters ( It still runs on a heavily moded Super Metroid Engine, so there has to be some limitations.

I also have a small complaint with Fusion's structure. I recently played through both games back to back, and I found some parts a bit repetitive. I know this is a nitpick, but going back to the navigation room and then going to another sector to get your objective after completing the first can get slightly repetitive to me at least. Thankfully later in the game this is masked better, but I think Super Metroid did mask some of the repetitiveness "welcome back to this location, go here for your next objective" type stuff better. That's my preference though, and a minor nitpick.

Exactly! Both games are finely crafted, and I just started playing them a few years ago. In fact, all of the 2D Metroids after Super are fantastic and are about the same quality. If only we got that Metroid Dread..

Samus' Power suit *IS* the coolest looking sci-fi armor in video games. Master Chief? please, not even. Samus is way cooler. Also Metroid Fusion is almost like a perfect sci fi horror film. Think about it. Your sent to an abandoned space station only to find it infested with monsters destroying everything. Suddenly you become trapped there and one super alien begins *HUNTING* You. Your mission is now to escape the station alive. How is that NOT an awesome horror setting. Linear =/= bad. Linear is developer saying "this is the path the story should be experienced, you are along for the ride experiencing the story"

Another thing he didn't mention about the map systems, Fusion also added the locations of doors on the map screen, which Super didn't have. Doesn't seem all that helpful until you're trying to backtrack and go the wrong way because you couldn't tell if a couple of adjacent rooms actually connected or not.

Agreed, navigation in Super was a pain. I really don't see why showing what to do makes it worse either, all it means is you aren't fumbling around trying to figure out where to go half of the time.

Get Rekt Scrub Exactly. And I can understand the dislike of the game essentially locking you into an area for story purposes, but at the same time, you get free range of the BSL after getting the Screw Attack, as long as you can find the tunnels between sectors. Imo though, the game I think combined exploration and a sense of direction best was Zero Mission. The Chozo statues point you towards the next powerup, but you don't necessarily need to follow where it sends you, nor do you need to even activate more than a few if you're going for certain powerups.
@JediMB
@JediMB 8 жыл бұрын
Speaking of Fusion displaying door locations, the problem with how the game handled that is that the locations aren't updated as the terrain changes. Plotting optimal courses through some areas was really frustrating because you often found yourself stopping at a door that had been melted shut or covered with debris due to SA-X or the security robot.
@100organicfreshmemes5
@100organicfreshmemes5 8 жыл бұрын
JediMB.net I feel like that was intentional, neither Samus nor Adam knew the doors were melted shut. If you knew in advance it would remove the surprise and fear of what could have melted the door.
@JediMB
@JediMB 8 жыл бұрын
Oh, the surprise issue isn't my problem. That's completely logical. The problem is that the map isn't updated after you've visited the area and located the alternate route.

I 100% agree. Super metroid certainly has its merits, but i think that fusion was a refined edge. They learned from the mistakes made in Super and applied it to their practice. Sure, it lost some depth of "exploration", of which it has PLENTY, but it democratized the game, and made it more palatable for a wider audience. The major point super has over fusion is for sure the soundtrack, but i dont think Castlevania 2 is better than 1 because 2 has Bloody Tears.

Even when it was fresh, I always felt that the controls in Super Metroid were always kind of awkward. Not game breakingly awkward, but awkward nonetheless. This became even more glaring when I finally picked up Metroid Fusion. My only regret with Fusion is not recognizing the point where I could freely explore the entire map to pick up last minute items before the final confrontation. The point of no return isn't immediately obvious, which complicates this. I simply can't say which one's better tbh, but I will concede that both have their merits which eclipse the other ever so slightly. Now we just wait for Super Metroid Fusion! 8-)

I agree with the SM controls. They are a bit "floaty", but I never complained about them. Being able to grip ledges in Fusion was an awesome addition. I also agree with you in regards to the Fusion map closing near the end. That kind of sucked, and I'm not familiar enough with the game to remember that it is gonna happen each time I play it.

Metroid Fusion is my favourite 2D Metroid game. There's nothing I would change in that game. @@mariowario5945 I've played through Fusion five times. God knows how many for Super Metroid, which is probably part of the reason why I prefer Fusion. I'm not the type of player who likes to replay games too often, just like I don't re-read books within ten years. I tend to get sick of things when I get too much, so games like these I try to take long breaks before replaying. It's awesome when things I had forgotten all about have nearly the same impact on me as the first time when experiencing again. But when SM came out in '94 it blew me away, and was the best game I had ever played at the time, so naturally I liked to go through it over and over again. I'm a much different gamer today.

I agree with most points, but I feel the "secrets" is double-sided. While Fusion has more puzzley stuff, SM really had some intimate things. Take the chozo statue where u curl up and he walks through the spikes. Or the place where u learn how to wall jump from the creatures. Or the glass tunnel you could break with super bombs to get into Maridia. Or the quicksand routing in Maridia etc. SM's secrets felt more organic and woven into the game, imo I'd give it a draw :P tldr; Fusion for more puzzley secrets, SM for more adventurous immersive secrets.

Same. Haven’t played Dread yet but I really prefer Fusion over Super Metroid. I found myself wandering a lot with Super Metroid…A LOT. I got lost WAY too much. I rate quit a lot bc of it. I prefer the more linear experience compared to the more open ended. And the controls are better in Fusion to me. I’d give Super a 6/10, and Fusion 8/10. I REALLY hated wandering and being confused in Super. It kinda ruined the experience for me. I don’t have a ton of time when I play video games, so I prefer my time be respected, and fusion did that for me in spades.

A lot of those boss fights are tough as hell. I eventually started using a guide on the third video. Too bad that I had no audio for the whole almost two hour video. :/ I got to the end, beat it and tried for the hidden boss...and gave up. :p I figured it wasn't worth my time. Very frustrating. Overall, the game was a big thumbs up. I loved the first two and Demons Crest is to this franchise what Super Metroid was to that franchise. For those who say Super Metroid is the better game and base it on Fusion's linearity, the freedom in Super Metroid is a bit more limited than a lot of people think, based on access to certain areas being dependent on power-ups. There's clearly a defined progression that the devs intend for you to go. You can deviate somewhat if you're experienced and know the shortcuts but the first time player is not going to know about them without a guide or walkthrough. True, it's still not as linear as Fusion but SM's open-endedness is a bit more illusion than fact. That being said, I gotta give a slight edge to SM but Fusion is an outstanding game too and does a few things even better than SM. SA-X is one of them. I'd put Fusion #2 on the 2D Metroid games and Zero Mission #3.

I've liked the video but I disagree on this one for the first time. While I enjoy both games and would defend them to death, Super Metroid is simply a step above Fusion for several reasons. Super Metroid had a more tight design and a more cohesion between abilities and the level design presented. The immersion gotten from playing Super Metroid for the first time (or hell, even the 100th time) is out of this world, the attention to detail is astounding and the fact most people can enjoy it today, 23 years after its release is a testament of one of gaming biggest achievements. Fusion in the other hand is a great game, good sequel that expands upon the abilities given before, dabbles more with the story and atmosphere than Super Metroid did with its design and gameplay. I still get chills down my spine when I face SA-X (FROM A PORTABLE GAME nonetheless...its pure TERROR). Attention to detail is however below SM and the level design is derivative of previous entries with an additional hand holding from Alex that takes me away from the immersion of being lonely in a planet. Overall both games are excellent and I still play both of them, but I'd have to give the title to Super Metroid. I'm a bit biased overall though, its my favorite videogame ever and playing it for the first time is an experience I've since tried to replicate throughout all my gaming career with different amounts of success (Castlevania Symphony of the Night, Dark Souls and Dead Space come to mind, so does the whole Metroidvania genre and all other immersion heavy games I've playted throughout the years). To this day, I'll play any game that I feel can bring me a sense of joy similar to this game. I see you changed your name today as well, but you're still Westapo for many. Cheers and keep the content coming!

I've been meaning to change the name of the channel for a while now, but I'm a big procrastinator. Glad you still knew it was me! I have so much blinding nostalgia for Super Metroid that I didn't want to face that I enjoyed Fusion better. But I simply couldn't lie to myself anymore. Every time I've played Fusion, which I think was at four times when I did this video, I couldn't help but get the feeling that this was the best damn Metroid game I've ever played. While I do agree with most of your assessment of Super Metroid, I guess I'd hafta say that I don't mind the "hand holding", which was done in such a clever and superb way that it's not really hand holding at all. And I think I've also outgrown being "lost" in games. It annoys the hell outta me now. What's really funny is so many people have accused me of being biased or having nostalgia for Fusion. It's actually completely the opposite. I feel Fusion is simply just an evolved and natural improvement over an already amazing franchise. But I knew going into this that my opinion would not be a popular one, and my main goal was to get people who have never played Fusion to give it a shot. If you haven't checked out my 5 Most Nostalgic Games video yet, you should, as Super Metroid is on there. It was probably my all-time favorite game for a bit, too.

I'm gonna say I think Fusion has the superior control scheme and boss design, whereas Super Metroid has the (BY FAR) superior scenario and map design. Aesthetically, I could go either way, although Samus' sprites definitely look better in Fusion.

Basically, if Super Metroid got an updated control scheme where you don't have to hammer Select to switch between weapons, I'd easily place it above Fusion. (Controls are important, obviously.) As the games actually are, though, I'm pretty torn between the two.

Things not articulated in by this video: I believe both games are equally non-linear, yet slightly linear. While both games do actually have a linear progression (with quite a few side-trips available), Metroid Fusion tells you where to go, while Super Metroid lets you explore and figure it out. Neither one of these are bad; it depends on the type of gamer you are. Do you want to explore, get stuck, and figure out where you are actually supposed to go next, or do you look it up in Nintendo Power? The Metroid Fusion color palette also doesn't lend too much to the dark atmosphere that a game that has roots in sci-fi horror should have. Super Metroid wins here; however, bear in mind that Metroid Fusion was made for the GBA before the SP came out, or any further Nintendo Handheld that had a backlight. Aren't lithium batteries grand?

Oh boy...I find Super Metroid much further, especially when it comes to navigating. In Fusion, you know which silo to look in at any given time. Super Metroid is more open world and sometimes it's daunting how big a map you have to look through to find out how to advance...and no pointer to where you need to go!

I'm a huge fan of the Metroid series, and Super Metroid is my absolute favourite game of all time. I used to strongly dislike Fusion, but every time I play it, I warm up to it a bit more. There are a lot of cool elements, such as the absorption of the X-parasites as power ups and the SA-X which infuses a true horror feel to parts of the game, and it definitely deserves merit for that. However, I've got to respectfully disagree with a bunch of your points, haha! I find the graphics in Super Metroid to be far superior and more cohesive, and the animations are much more fluid. The weapon selection in Super Metroid is waaaay more vast that that found in Fusion, mostly by the way of advanced techniques and weapon combos. For example, charging the beam and rolling into a ball will produce 5 bombs at once which can be flung around the environment. The ability to switch out your beams for various combinations is excellent as well, and also mixing them with power bombs to produce a bunch of beam combo effects adds a cool element to the game. You can also use the bombs to crystal flash, and the grappling beam even has some very cool uses as a devastating weapon, particularly against Draygon. I think the sheer versatility in Samus' suit in Super Metroid far outweighs that found in Fusion. The story in Fusion is interesting, but I find it pretty hamfisted in there. The cutscenes and dialogue are incredibly long and frequent, and seem to shove the plot down your throat. The interesting thing about Super Metroid, on the other hand, is how it presents story without need for cutscenes. The dead scientists on Ceres station are a great example, as well as the intense encounters with the Metroid larva and Mother Brain near the end of the game. Small details that explain story are peppered throughout the game and you piece them together rather than needing a long-winded computer explaining everything. That subtlety has always been really cool to me. The controls in Super Metroid can also be fully customized so you don't even have to hit Select to switch weapons, so you can set up a control scheme that works perfectly for you. Fusion doesn't have that option, and I actually find the weapon selection and aiming in Fusion to be pretty brutal. I'm also not too crazy about the Fusion Suit (I think it looks stupid), as well as Samus' new ship...and I'm not nuts about how the game straight up locks you out of backtracking to certain locations at set points, either. Overall, I have to hand it to Super Metroid myself. Maybe it's a bit of nostalgia and favouritism, but I strongly believe the world, music, graphics, and tight controls make Super Metroid flow much better as an experience, whereas Fusion is quite jarring at a number of points. I've thought about it a lot over the years, with many people saying that Fusion is amazing, prompting me to give it another playthrough. Each time I play it, I DO enjoy myself and I find that I appreciate the game more for what it is...but with Super Metroid, I never had that sort of issue, which I think is a huge indicator for me. THIS ALL BEING SAID: Great video with a lot of awesome editing, and I absolutely respect your opinion in the end. Everyone's entitled to one :) - Adam

Thank you very much, and thank you for not going crazy-ape-shit on me like some others have. You bring up a ton of excellent points which in all honesty, I had never even thought about. We obviously have our own styles of playing Super Metroid (I NEVER use the crystal flash) and while I always kill Draygon with the grappling beam, including that into the weapon equation never crossed my mind. And in regards to the story, you make excellent points about how SM lets the visuals and atmosphere dictate the narrative as opposed to Fusion's text based story. Again, never even thought about it that way. And you're not the first one to bring up the controls in SM. I'm such a creature of habit, that I had completely forgotten that you can customize them. I missed a lot of stuff, but that's why I always ask for the viewers' input. I too am a die-hard SM fan, and for the longest time it was maybe my all-time favorite game. But every time I played Fusion I had this heartbreaking feeling deep inside my gut that I enjoyed it better, but I simply did not want to face it. I went into this experiment with an open mind, and Fusion came out on top with flying colors. But then again, I had played Super Metroid so many times that maybe it had grown a bit "stale" for me. The bottom line though, is that both are fantastic games, and if I was able to encourage just one person to play one or the other, or even both and make a comparison for themselves, then the enjoyment I would presume they got out of it should be enough to satisfy me. Thanks a lot for sharing your articulate opinion, and opening my eyes to points that I had clearly missed. But that's what's so fun about doing comparisons like this. Hearing the perspectives from others who see "green" when I see "blue".

I think Super gets the vote for controls. Mostly because of wall jumping. Wall jumping is just so good in Super Metroid and Fusion has the odd burden of not allowing you to jump off the same wall twice. I understand that Fusion does this to prevent sequence breaking, but it really takes away a fun part. Also, Super lets you remap your buttons. I think most players don't keep weapon select on the select button. I use X. Also interesting is the removal of the run button in Fusion. I do like this better though. I pretty much also hold run in Super, so it is nice to get rid of it. Fusion does have some cool secrets, but they end up just being a whole load of Power Bombs. 74 power bombs is just too much and makes the secrets less meaningful. For me Super gets the nod for better game because of the non-linearity of the map design, basically the sequence breaking. As long as you don't spoil yourself by watching others play there is a lot of creativity in replaying Super. Fusion has creativity but it mostly comes into play right before you go to the last boss in how you want to round up all the remaining items. Don't get me wrong, I LOVE Fusion, but Super just has more to play with. No infinite bomb jumping in Fusion is also a bummer (again, so there is no sequence breaking). So yes, Fusion improves on most things, but it takes a step back in overall map design and in some of the controls.

You make a ton of great points, and I can definitely see it from your point of view. I always kept the missiles set to 'select' on Super Metroid cuz I liked to keep the controls the same as the original Metroid--and I'm a creature of habit, so I never gave assigning them to another button a second thought. Also, I capped the footage for these games a couple of months before making this video, so I forgot about some stuff. That's why I like to make my videos immediately after capping the footage, but I was busy working on other stuff, so it unfortunately didn't work out that way. And for me, in regards to secrets, it doesn't matter what the reward is, it's the creativity of how they are hidden. Like that old saying: "It's all about the journey, not the destination." But again, I totally see it from your point of view. One thing I don't like about Fusion is that many of the items cannot be found until after you beat it, but remove that from the equation and I still like the secrets better than Super Metroid, and the necessity to find hidden paths in order to progress any further. Like I mentioned in the video, I don't mind how linear Fusion is, but I knew people would prefer Super Metroid's style. And that totally makes sense! Oh, and the music in Super Metroid blows Fusion's out of the water! The bottom line though, is both games are amazing, which is why I have always struggled to pick one over the other. The simple solution of course, is to play 'em both and enjoy! Thanks a lot for watching and responding with your opinion. And thanks for pointing out some of the stuff that I had missed. I'm curious to see what other people's opinions are. Hopefully they'll point them out as eloquently as you have.

I don't mind the linearity of Fusion at all. I feel that Metroid 1 is semi-non-linear, Metroid 2 is linear, Metroid 3 is semi-non-linear, Metroid 4 is linear. I actually kind of like that cadence, going back and forth on designs. They also went home console, portable, home console, portable. Perfectly fine for me. I just think that Super has the best semi-non-linear design ever, which is why I like it a bit more. Now I wonder how you feel between Zero Mission and Fusion. Basically Super, Fusion, and Zero Mission are some of the greatest games ever. Talking about which is better is fun and I don't think anyone's opinion is wrong. Thanks for the video, I enjoyed your analysis.

I never really noticed that about the first four Metroid games. Non-linear-linear, home console-portable. Good observation. One thing I always loved about Fusion was the gameplay was so connected to the story. Samus's new suit couldn't take as much hits as her old one, and you lost energy a lot faster. Being more agile, she could jump around a lot faster (which as where I believe Zero Mission messed up cause again, her old suit wasn't as streamlined and quick but took more hits), and even now was thin enough to pull herself up ledges. The best part is how the game is very linear at the beginning, but as Samus gains more and more power throughout the game, becoming closer and closer to her old self, even surpassing in the end, the game breaks form and you start making your own paths and defying orders. For those who love Super Metroid, Metroid Fusion is a game about returning to Super Metroid and finding again what you loved so much about exploration, gaining power, and taking rules from no one. What would compliment this best would be a story driven sequel of Fusion with level design closer to Super Metroid, a perfect combination that was Fusion's ending point and achievement.

Fusion was my first Metroid, and I fell in love with it. However, I think Super is the better game. The atmosphere and feeling of each area is stellar, and the game is a joy to replay with its advanced techniques and smooth pacing. Fusion has a lot of starts and stops that break the flow, and not as much of a creepy atmosphere within each sector, save for the incredible SA-X moments, especially when the power goes out. Fusion does have better controls (it's hard to go back after using missles with R) and more gripping scripted moments, but Super is just more solid. I think you should've judged the games on replayability instead of weapons, but overall i loved your review man. Both games are classic and it was cool to see someone give some points to Fusion.

Objectively I'd pick 100% Super Metroid as #1 because of the 100% perfect atmosphere, level-design and gameplay. Fusion is super linear, Super Metroid not at all. It opens way more possibilities. My Ranking would be: 1.) Super Metroid 2.) Prime 3.) Fusion

it seems a lot of people like fusion but I think is because they are younger, back in the day when Super Metroid was shiny and new, kids hated it because it was too much for them and there was no internet to help you play the game. finishing the game when you were 13 years old all by yourself was something to remember, SM is a master piece but not everyone could understand it, the graphics were amazing for its time, the environments creepy and fascinating , the songs perfect and the gameplay was super tight and challenging with no idea where to start. Fusion is a lot colorful (I didnt like it), is a lot easier, its always clear where to go and it even has dialogues! is a pretty good game but is aimed at little kids. Prime is pretty good too (my fav echoes) but it kinda suffers the same "too easy to play" problem, my wish is a hardcore prime re-make (fan made) FPS game using camera moves like mirrors edge. the new metroid game looks just lame (federation)

I disagree that Fusion was aimed for kids. I think it is much more difficult than Super Metroid, but then again I've been playing SM since '94 and remember all of the boss' and enemies' tricks. It also seems that a lot of the younger gamers still prefer SM over Fusion, too--at least the ones that I've interacted with. I do agree with you that the graphics, music and atmosphere in SM was pretty groundbreaking at the time. I knew it blew me away.

I love both games, and though I do favor SM in many ways, it never gave me that heart-stopping feeling of dread when the SA-X would come into a room, then the sheer panic and terror when it actually SAW you and gave chase. Well, Im glad someone had the balls to say it. I wouldnt say its way better like this guy did, but Fusion is better. Its really subjective based on how much you like dialogues and linearity. Sequence breaking is fun but it can also leave you lost in a game so Fusions linearity is fine by me, especially when there are sooo many secrets. I also love stories, its great to learn about the Federation goals and Modus operandi and the comp is really interesting. I have slightly more fun playing ZM but Fusions length makes it better. Fusion being better in a lot of ways doesn't make Super NOT amazing, but a lot of Super's quality as an experience comes from it being broken as hell. Fusion is a tighter, more controlled experience with a survival horror bent, whereas Super is an open-world exploratory power fantasy. Comparing the two is slightly unfair in both directions.

Hello, new to your channel but I really enjoyed your comparison /review. I give you that the arguments you made were very valid and spot on. Judging by categories was an inspired choice but I disagree that Fusion is the better game. Super in my opinion Is greater because it's more than the sum of its parts. It is iconic in a way Fusion just cannot reach. The soundtrack alone is iconic. You used two pieces of the music in your video but didn't do that w/Fusion and honestly, is any of the sound from Fusion memorable? Can you hear it and say to yourself, "Oh, that's from section such and such?" not really. I don't think so. I admit The SAX antagonist does make Fusion feel more menacing But, Super made for a more visceral, deeper emotional experience, especially at the end when you 1st find out that the baby Metroid was being held captive and sacrifices itself to help you destroy Mother Brain. Moments like that don't come around very often. And to this day, I still want a Hyper Beam. Also, Super Metroid elevated both the SNES and the metroid franchise in general, finding a place in many Gamer's top 10 list of Best video games of all time. Fusion doesn't do that for the Gameboy and nostalgia doesn't do that in and of itself... solid game design does. Fusion is a great game and if you judge it simply by the criteria you've presented, it does seem to be the better game. But, you failed to judge the 2 game's replayability which Super wins by a large margin. (king of the Speed Run subgenre) Also the feeling of isolation is more readily felt in Super. The joy of finally getting a certain power up or weapon is more readily felt in Super, as well. And lastly, Super Metroid doesn't live in the shadows of it predecessors Metroid or Metroid 2. It towers above both of them. Fusion, though a great game....sadly, rests firmly in the shade of Super Metroid and will always be compared to Super. All other Metroid games are compared to Super. Your argument is compelling but I think they're better question asked is, "Is Metroid Fusion better than Zero Mission? " -As a die hard Metroid fan, I have to say, there is no comparison hear. Super Metroid exists in a class all its own. Thxx for posting.

"Super Metroid is better because Fusion is not as good". That's essentially your logic here, saying that Super Metroid also gives you more joy from getting items is completely subjective, not a reason that it's better. It just sounds to me like you want to validate your gigantic nostalgia boner.

I played Super Metroid but was too young so I got bored, a few years later I played Prime and Fusion and love them both, that make me go back to Super Metroid and man I love it even more than the other two, for me the exploration on Super Metroid is better, the secrets and all, I love Fusion too but now I feel it too linear for a Metroid game, I like the story on Fusion but I hate the fact you need to follow orders in the game I didn't like that. So for me the nostalgia factor doesn't count because I actually played and completed Fusion first and between them Super is better game for me, but I still think Prime is the best Metroid of them all. I played the hell out of it and the others on gameboy advance. The prime series is amazing. Prime 2 and 3 have awesome soundtracks on par or better than Super Metriod. I recommend it for a Metroid fan like i would The Legend of Zelda a Link to the Past for a Zelda fan as an experience not to be missed. Playing Prime 3 would be ok as a first. It wont ruin the others but you will be getting the best flavor of the Prime series in my opinion. Prime 2 is too hard for someone new to it. I wish to add to your point on Super Sammy that aesthetic and storytelling through both environment and mannerisms helped Super ALOT for me, it is a very fun game. Im kinda mixed personally on the Prime Series- it was fun, dont get me wrong, but Im more likely to enjoy Super past the first time, where the Primes take a toll if I try more than once every few months. I know it comes to preference, but while I feel the Primes were amazing for the franchise and Im glad they are part of the Metroid series- they are great games- I personally prefer the 2d ones for replaying. Now that you reminded me of it Ill likely go back and play the Primes again lol, but its my preference. And before you think its just me disliking first person games I enjoy them quite a bit, but the primes, especially the first, have really tedious mandatory parts.

Super Metroid is the superior game. there is no "rose colored glasses" about it. 1. Story Probably the only one i'll give to fusion, as it has actual dialogue instead of "ridley stole metroid go get it". 2. Controls Super Metroid wins this easily. Apart from the incessant pressing of select, mobility is exponentially higher. tricks like walljumping and bomb jumping are entirely absent from fusion, with the exception of that one powerup that takes walljumps. walljumping is iconic to samus because of super metroid, and fusion crapped on that. 3. Graphics Your logic is basically "fusion is more colorful so it has better graphics". Fusion is full of artificial environments, it's meant to be colorful. The dank caves of planet Zebes will not be popping with color. it's dark and lonely, and the graphics are meant to make you feel that way. 4. Music easy 5. Secrets While yes, fusion has more secrets to find, they're actually laid out a lot more obviously than in super metroid. you can tell where blocks can be bombed, and the fact that power bombs reveal what blocks are destroyed by what makes it that much easier. super metroid forces you to work for the secrets. quality over quantity. 6. Map I'm genuinely curious what source you use when saying fusion's map is larger. The maps are at least the same size, but super metroid's map felt larger to me anyway. while fusion has more distinct separated areas, super metroid's areas are a lot larger and fleshed out, while fusion's sectors feel like a small iteration of certain ideas. it comes down to personal preference, as both games' maps are great, but super takes the edge for me for fleshing out ideas instead of confining them to a sector. 7. Enemies This one is also one that fusion may have an edge in due to the sheer amount of kinds of enemies, but the bosses in super metroid were way more memorable. besides the fights with omega ridley, yakuza and maybe the sentry bot, fusion's fights were bland and most of the time too easy. having to destroy the core-X at the end is less of a good thing and more of a chore. once again, quality over quantity. 8. Length Both games are equally long, with the difference being fusion's complete lack of any sequence breaking. its gated objectives and menial tasks provide artificial length, with the full station only being available right before the final boss. Super Metroid, on the other hand, offers monumental flexibility in the items you need/don't need, with runs being completed with as low as 14% items (key items are included in this number). item randomizers are even possible, with random powerups being distributed and completion still being possible. speedruns of super metroid are exhilarating, while fusion's speedruns are just fast completion of set tasks. The last thing i want to touch on is replayability. the only reason you cited for replayability in fusion is an item counter on a second playthrough. this is definitely useful, but is giving you arbitrary information. arbitrary information does not make replayability. super metroid, as i said before, offers multiple different ways to play through the game. reverse boss order, low%, item randomizers, the list goes on. you can get a ton of replayability out of super metroid by setting yourself challenges, much like the nuzlocke in pokemon. fusion's replaybility is limited to 3 kinds of runs: 1%, 100%, and somewhere in the middle. other than that you're forced through the same motions every single time you want to trudge through adam barking orders. that's my novel. idc if the video maker reads it or not but i felt like writing multiple paragraphs on why i love super metroid. i love metroid fusion too, but comparing the two is almost impossible, due to the vastly differing natures of the game (incredibly linear vs the most non linear metroid).

I have so much nostalgia for Super Metroid. I was a squirt and couldn't get very far on my own, but I loved watching my dad play this game and help me get through the bosses. I eventually had my GBA and went through Fusion a few years later. The SA-X portions where you had to tuck and run were such a heart-pounding event for me, I loathed getting ice beamed to death and not being able to overcome with some somersaults. I missed the grapple beam w/Fusion. To date the Metroid title music is one of my favorite things to listen to. It's been my phone ringtone for a few years. Prime also had an amazing and catchy soundtrack; my dad and I played a lot of that one too.

Very good review, but I'm not agree about the veredict. It's like comparing Super Metroid with the original Metroid (also with a 8 years distance) and count all the improvements made gives it a "flawless victory". I think that many people likes Fusion the most because it is more "friendly" and explains the story/events in a more cinematic view, like Super did compared to the original. And many likes Super the most because the impact caused at the time, no other 16 bit (or even 32 bit) adventure/platform game offers such replayabilty. I enjoyed both, but still to this time, I enjoyed replaying Super more than Fusion.

I really enjoyed this video, and it made me realize the improvements Fusion did a lot more. Personally thou I like Super Metroid's controls better. Holding a button to shot missiles felt more wonky to me than how it's done in Super Metroid. But I guess that's probably because I'm more used to Super Metroid's controls. Hard to break a habit. But I still think Super Metroid is a better game over all even if Fusion improved a lot of small things. Super Metroid have a higher replay value because when you know the game you discover that you can take different routes and you can experiment a lot. I think this is why Super Metroid is so popular among speedrunners. But also I think that both games deliver very different experiences. Super Metroid is like the ultimate game at what it does, so doing the same thing again would probably just fail or get "meh"-reactions. Fusion gives a more tight experience where you constantly have to battle this thing that are you but both stronger and are constantly trying to corner you. To bad is that since the encounters with the SA-X are all scripted the tension disappear on second playthrough and Adam's talking becomes just a slog that you already know. But basically: Super Metroid gets the core of a Metroid-game perfectly. Fusion is still masterpiece on it's own but feels more like a spin-off. But as long as you don't expect it to be the same thing you will probably enjoy it as much as Super Metroid. :)

Glad that you enjoyed the video. Your reaction is basically what I was aiming for with this comparison, regardless of which game you prefer--to make you think and to create discussion amongst fans. I know what you mean about habits and how they're hard to break. I've always changed my controls on SM so that they resemble the original's more, and it's so ingrained in my head, that I pretty much forgot that you can customize the controls in other ways as well. And I agree, that the SA-X loses the surprise element in replays of Fusion, but the impact it had left on the first time around really resonated with me. I feel the same way about Resident Evil 3 Nemesis. That's why I try to wait several years in between replays of games. So that I forget some stuff. Kind of like re-reading a book. Thanks for chiming in. Your well thought out comment is definitely appreciated!

I love both of them, but personally disagree with a few of your conclusions. I think the weapons category should go to super metroid, with the multiple hidden weapon techniques, also tying into the graphics segment. Super metroid simply looks better, sharper, and more atmospheric. I think it wins that one also. I truly love both, but there were a few problems with Fusion that I can't ignore. It didn't have the same level of atmosphere as Super, though it did push the horror vibe further. With zones like Brinstar, Norfair, and especially for the love of god Meridia, Super immerses me in the infinite depths of an alien world. For most of Fusion I felt like I was watching a cartoon, and it took away from it for me a bit.

I clicked this video because it was answering a question I've had since 2003. I love the Metroid series; I've played all the 2-D versions to-date. Metroid Fusion was my first. Metroid Fusion is my favorite. And it's plagued me. Why do I prefer the one to the other, and is it actually based on the quality of the game? I played Metroid Fusion while I was road tripping out to the Grand Canyon. Third, maybe second strongest memory I made on that trip was defeating Yakuza, that mecha-spider guy. Super Metroid, I was in a dorm on a friend's system. Ash was chill. That's my associated memory. So I've wondered for a while if I was letting that bias affect my opinion. This video was analytical. I feel more comfortable in my opinion, now

Here's how my experience for both game went: I rush Super Metroid, until starting to collect item around the world after getting the grapple beam. Then, I lost interest several time in favor of playing Prime 1 and 2 a second time. The controls, the physics of the game, the fact that I used super missiles against Phantoon, the fact that I skip the wave beam and the other 3 shot beam without knowing it was possible to skip main item without sequence break, all these things made me go away from the game. But the weird thing is, when I got the space jump, I started to enjoy a lot more, and I ended up playing 100% month after starting the game. For fusion, it was the complete opposite. I rush throught the main story in two weeks, and I appreciate the challenge of the bosses, the more precise controls, I just had a better time than everything in Super. But, then before the final boss, I tried to collect the missiles and stuff, and found out all was lock. I panic at first, and then I saw on the internet that you have to go back after Sa-X. I wasn't satisfied, but I accepted and I return to find all upgrade. And I wasn't able to finish. I felt the item where hidden in much more cryptic ways than in Super, and the map design, while perfect for the main story, cleary wasn't made for backtracking. But the worst part was that *ALL SECTOR MUSIC GOT REPLACE BY THE MOST ANNOYING MUSIC EVER!*

Dude.... amazing video! Your best yet! I was glued to it the entire time. Really well thought out and insanely in depth (especially with your categories lol). Fusion has been on my list of games to play since it came out. My problem is finding a way to play it on my TV. Yes, you mentioned some ways... but I just got rid of my Wii U, don't own or want a Retron 5, and the GC method is incredibly expensive now, especially if you are like me and want perfect picture quality (the freaking GC component cables are $300 now!!!!). So I don't have a viable solution other than emulation... Which I REALLY don't want to resort to. Hell, I even OWN the cart lol. I'm also surprised you picked Fusion over Super Metroid. That is bound to be a controversial choice. Although you made very valid points. I love Super Metroid, but I can't compare until I play Fusion. Which will hopefully be sometime in the not too distant future...

My best yet? You think so? Thanks, man! I did this video in a much more serious tone. The last one I did was completely the opposite, so I had my fill of goofiness. I always like to do my videos with different styles to keep things fresh and to challenge myself. God knows I spent a lot of time working on this one. Man, you need to figure out a way to play Fusion, cuz you are really missing out. Yeah, I know my choice will be a controversial one, as it was a tough decision to make regardless of how it seemed in the video. But that's why I encourage viewers to share their opinions, which some have already done with extremely valid and palpable points. Like I said in the video, I kinda avoided in my own heart, for over twelve years now, deciding which of the two is truly the better game. But dammit, it had to be done and I'm really glad that you enjoyed the outcome. Hopefully you can find that GC component cable at a yard sale or something. Hydro the story in fusion is far worse than in SM because it's unsubtle and dumps everything in your face with text bars. It uses it's visuals to tell the story and you need to pay attention to understand what's going on. There are countless analyses on the internet, I recommend watching/reading a bunch of them because they totally debunk that statement. The controls are tighter, yes, but you didn't have nearly as many possibilities with the fusion scheme. You can do some really crazy stuff in SM if you know what you're doing.
@MLennholm
@MLennholm 7 жыл бұрын
Only imbecilles think the ham-fisted concoction of poorly written dialogue that makes up the story in Fusion is better than in SM. The story in Fusion is only good where it's told completely through visuals, with how the environments change as you progress. Fusion and ZM are great games, but no way ZM is better than SM "in every way possible". For starters, ZM completely lacks the ominous atmosphere, organically varying environments and sense of isolation that SM has. It's much simpler. The sequence breaking isn't facilitated organically like it is in SM, instead it has artificial dedicated "sequence break tunnels". SM let you sequence break by exploiting the level design in many different ways, in ZM it's basically just "turn left for the regular path, turn right for the 'sequence break path'".
@luisburgos7365
@luisburgos7365 7 жыл бұрын
I kind of agree with what you said about the sequence breaking in ZM, but don't make it sound like they're easily found lol. It's actually a nice reward when one DOES find some of them. Just not as much as SM, nor as plentiful. SM is still the better game

Super blows Fusion out of the water in every way possible except controls. I will give Fusion credit for the more intuitive control scheme. But this comparison is a joke. Fusion has better graphics and secrets? I know opinions are like assholes, but this is just straight up wrong. Also, more story doesnt mean a better one. Super evoked just about every emotion possible all through no dialogue or forced cutscenes. The scene where the Metroid saves you is probably the greatest use of storytelling in a videogame where youre in control, nothing is spelled out, and the gravity of whats happening must be inferred by the player. By contrast, Fusion throws a lot of annoying, unskippable dialogue boxes at you with a hokey love story to boot. They blatantly copied the aforementioned moment but with the SAX and an Omega Metroid, yet they missed what made the original work so well. I could go on and on, but Ill end with this: Fusion began the downward trend of the series. This is where we got the asinine Sakamoto story coming in, the insufferable romantic subplot with Adam, the loss of free range and everything else that made Metroid great. Retro Studios "got" Metroid better than post-Gunpei Yokoi Nintendo ever has.

Started the downward trend? My friend, even if you dislike the game, you'd just be factually wrong with that statement. This game released the exact same day as the first Metroid Prime, which was a fantastic series (even Prime Hunters was good, imo,) and we got Zero Mission after Fusion, which is often considered to be a remake that effectively replaces the original game. Yes, we all know Other M was a terrible, terrible game, but that's not on Fusion at all.

I still like Fusion. Yeah I like Super better, and Zero Mission even better than that, but Fusion was still a great game. Yes, it was linear. You wanna know why? Because it is unacceptable for esoteric design to be in a PORTABLE game. And even if it was linear in progression, doors never locked behind you, and you could always explore to your hearts content unlike other games (Looking at you Other M). Super - Prime 3 was the golden age of Metroid, and only after that did it begin its dark age, well at least officially, AM2R was awesome.

I will agree that both games have their pluses Wiiman, but I think that saying nostalgia is a big thing for Super over Fusion is a bad idea, as Ive had friends play both first and there doesnt seem to be a correlation between which was played first and which was preferred. Graphics and music being good doesnt always mean a good aesthetic- they need to work together well with the gameplay to provide an appropriate aesthetic. I can say Ive played both, and I prefer Super because of its ability to tell a story without a line of dialogue but rather just mannerisms and environment- an amazing feat- as well as aesthetic, lack of early game hand-holding (unlike Fusion), and the non-linearity is a cherry on top. As a matter of fact the early game hand-holding is what kills Fusion as a whole for its replayability for me. Are individual components of Fusion better? Objectively yes, but how the components interact with each other decide between a good game and a great game. A great game makes you want to complete the adventure several times, and in that respect I need to give Super a bigger tip of the hat. Are either perfect? Heck no, they can learn from each other, but I hope I explained my stance well enough to you all.

Remove your fusion rosie glasses. The art of game design to tell a story and to teach the player how to play without words is unparallelled in super metroid. The story in fusion is said by text and through dialog and this is a much cheaper way to do the job. The graphic are much superior in SM everything is coerant and immersive and on the oposite fusion have to outline the drawing so it can be seen with the limited gameboy screen lowering the dark atmosphere and loneliness effect. Fusion had the spirit of Metroid completely wrong in that regard. Finally : no sequence break. The fun of SM is finding news ways to do the same things and you can basically do anything in the game through controls and outstanding game design. You can't sequence break fusion. You can't speed run fusion as well as SM. Fusion is just an inferior game on all points.

The point of Fusion was to be Metroid without being Metroid. It still retains many elements from Super, but think about this; it takes place on a space station, and Samus has a new suit with different abilities. Even if there is text in the game, and there is pointers to your destination, it never tells you how.

ubbecykelkedja the first metroid game I played and knew of was fusion and I believe that super is way better. I played both. It's not even close honestly. However, that doesn't mean that fusion sucks. I think of fusion as the introductory game for those who want to try to get into the metroid games. The linearity makes it easy to figure out what to do next. I say this because after my first playthrough of super metroid, I still like fusion more mainly because I was getting frustrated having trouble figuring out what to do next in super but after multiple playthroughs, I figured out what to do at every part of the game and it made it more fun. They're both great games but I believe that super is way better.

Nha, SM is the bestest cause arguments ! What make Super Metroid not good but great: Super has better music and level design for a start than fusion, but saying better than... is nothing, lets go to the Meat, -More atmospheric, more alone (there is people that really luv that) -Not linear is what metroidvania are about. It = Exploration. And less linear = more exploration -Soft lock level design where it is possible to sequence break intended by the developpers and even there is many that arent intended because the gameplay is really less restricted wich make the player skill cap higher -Story driven by the level design and visual, no text. It doesnt break the immersion, that is how you story in games. -Elegant gameplay, fluidity and smoothness. Floaty jumps givin you more time to plan the action. Run or no run button for more different kind of velocity jumps -Hidden gameplay for replay value. Adding secrets in level design wasnt enough, they added secrets in the gameplay itself which is amazing. -Super also has every main items exept the spider ball Finally in Super you have that place where there is a missile behind an item and then another fuc*ing missile behind that missile :D.

Lol nope. I've played Fusion before Super and both rather recently and Super Metroid is sure as hell polished in every corner whereas Fusion is not. It's better because it doesn't hold your hand and tells its story visually. It's subtle and not in your face. It would even reward you for sequence breaks because the people who made this game knew exactly what people were going to try out. Everyone love sit for that reason and not because of nostalgia.

Most people say "How did I DOWNLOAD Missiles?" or "How does downloading a suit work?" I say "the game itself said the X CORRUPTED parts of her suit. The infected parts were removed, but the data and possibly code within the suit that manages suit-adaption and missile-loading were still retained within the suit but due to corruption cannot function. The Data Rooms provide the replacement code to restore these functions. Absorbing the MEMORIES of X parasites has the same effect. And this is how you DOWNLOAD missiles and suits; you're just restoring the corrupted code within the suit so they can function again."

I feel Super Metroid and Metroid Fusion are two distinctly different flavors of the series: Fusion is bright, colorful, and brash. To a degree, things are spelled out for the player. There's always a set objective, though the location of the objective isn't always exactly known. The player is tasked with exploring smaller areas than in Super, but there's plenty of action around every corner. Super is dark, atmospheric, and subtle. The player is dropped onto the planet and expected to figure everything out for themselves (with the help of masterful level design that leads and teaches the player with nary a word on the screen). There are often multiple ways the player can tackle a larger task, with plenty of opportunities to sequence break with hidden techniques. Whether or not the player is being led by design, it's always ultimately up to the player to decide where they want to go. To me, that leads to a more satisfying feeling of exploration and discovery. I think peoples' favor on each game depends on their personal preference of these differences. I fall on the Super Metroid side. I like my sequence breaks and advanced wall jumping (Still upset that Fusion took that out). What I want to know is why more people don't put Zero Mission into this comparison! It's like a mix between Fusion and Super, and yet it seems to me that very few people give it due praise. In my opinion, it's better than Fusion, hands down!

A lot of the stuff you said is true, but one major thing i disagree on is graphics. Fusion is gorgeous, don't get me wrong, but super basically perfects the 16 bit style. A couple of categories are missing, too, like movement/fluidity of the playable character (samus) which is won by super

Really? I'm not a big fan of how "floaty" Samus is in Super. Didn't bother me when it was brand new, but I notice it a lot more now.

@@NefariousWes most people see that as a positive. You can have preferances, but the majority of people like floatiness

@@Metawire61 Not really. Speedrunners prefer the more complex physics of super, everyone else prefers how fluid fusion and zero mission are.
