Greatings from South Carolina...Nick& crew. I was fortunate to know a older gentleman that had worked for Chrysler from 1948 to 1972. He was like a mopar parts catalog!😉 He could tell you every part & tell you what it fit! He had 3 street Hemi's in crates, 440's ,383's ..etc. He also had the same set up your working on. He put in a 64 sport Fury, painted Petty blue. Good times knowing him& helping him put all his cars together! R.I.P. Mr. MAXWELL So this show ...puts a smile on my face!😁👍

Nick, glad to see anyone besides myself currently doing a 413! Pistons are VERY scarce for these as no one uses this bore other than Buick 430's. I have a few sets of NIB pistons as well IF you need some. Hastings has some good rings as thats the other issue due to odd bore sizing. So we had them drop shipped to Total Seal to have them modified to make the top ring gapless.

413 engines haven't received much attention or respect in later years. The high performance 413 engines were quickly overshadowed by the 426 wedge, the 426 Hemi and 440 engines. I am glad to see Nick make a project out of a high performance 413. Thank you.

@@NicksGarage Hi George, I was actually on the computer when I saw the notification pop up, so I went right to the video, lol. This was a very enjoyable episode of Nick's Garage, and brought back a lot of fond memories. The last time I was inside a 413 was back in the late 60's, Deja vu all over again. The 413 is so rare most people have never seen one in person. I'm looking forward to the build, and then to seeing the engine on the Dyno, and the comparison that Nick is planning. Merry Christmas Nick & George to you and your families, and to all the regular viewers of Nick's Garage, Peace, Love, and Muscle cars.

The Beach Boys sang about the 413 in 'Shut Down!" ''It happened on the strip where the road is wide, Two cool shorts standin' side by side, Yeah, my fuel injected Stingray and a 413, We're revin' up our engines and it sounds real mean! Tach it up, tach it up, Buddy, gonna shut you down!''

As a young man, kid, I worked on many 413s. They were very common industrial engines and those old things run forever and just didn't hardly ever cylinder bores. Of course, most ran on natural gas or propane, so they were clean. My grandpa used one to run his irrigation system. It pulled water 680 foot up an 8 inch casing. That takes power!

I mean just looking at the forward thinking design to elongate the intake runners as opposed to having high velocity stacks poking up out of the hood is incredible engineering! It's an eye popper opening up the hood and seeing this stupendous beavy of snakes with two big four barrel carburetors and if that's not enough, those are basically headers but straight from the factory! What's not to love seeing this awe inspiring performance package!?! Also that's great to hear that Scott from Coldwarmotors has lended a collaborate hand in the building of this beautiful beast of luxurious power. Great stuff as always guys, thanks again!!

North Dakota born & raised mopar. Truck pulled for yrs with a 413. The steel 413 crank I heard is supposed to b #7 lbs. lighter than a actual steel 440 crank. I’ve never checked. We used a 4.25 stroke crank with a 7.100 rod with small journal size and a 4.25 bore 413 for a square bore engine of 476 ci. We bored it from 4.18 to 4.25 bore. Awesome work nick. Thanks

Love that long intake and the concept is basically free power in a street rig. It’s like the 36” Holley Skyram intake from a couple years ago, except Chrysler made it fit under the hood 30 years ago. Thanks for sharing the tear down.

The slant sixes kinda reminded of them with the long curved intake manifolds. I can't wait to see the rebuild on the 413 and how it runs on the Dino. I knew an older guy that specialized on Mopars for most of his working life. He had an independent shop in Longview, Tx and when he retired, he moved to our town. I told him about the engine like this and he told me he had the whole setup in his shop that he took off a 300 decades ago. Unfortunately, he died several years ago and his wife sold everything and moved. I understand Weldon Cook was Mr Mopar in our area kinda like Nick is up there. Growing up in my small central Illinois town, a neighbor a couple of blocks from me had a 1969 Charger Daytona with a 440 Magnum under the hood. I was just a kid, only about 11 years old, but I remember drooling over that orange Charger with the black stripes, and pistol grip shifter four speed transmission. Blast from the past on this 300J. A friend of my dad had one in '65-'66. I had just got my drivers license and got to drive it many times to wash and detail it for him. I also took a 200 mile trip with him and got a chance to see what it could do on the highway. It definitely was an early muscle car. Even with the weight, it would get up and go.

This engine design was a direct result of a group of Chrysler engineer's who raced a 49 or 50 Plymouth coupe, powered by a early 354 engine. For more info, google the Ramchargers race team. The first tunnel ram, the first tuned exhaust headers, etc, etc.

When I was a teenager back in the '60's, there was a local drag racer who raced a car with a 413 engine - I think it was a Plymouth. The rumor was that he had to replace the engine bearings after every race - who knows if that was true. I remember that the compression ratio was supposed to be somewhere around 13/1. Being a drag racer, he had probably modified the engine. But anyway, that car, and the engine especially, made an impression on me that has lasted even to now almost 60 years later. I am looking forward to this project - thanks for taking the time and making the effort to document the process.

While I was in college (1967), a buddy of my neighbor was building a 1934 Dodge Coupe street rod using one of these engines. He had painted the block/heads bright yellow and the intake tubes and air filter housings gloss black. The carbs hung way out past the frame rails almost to the front wheels. The engine was hooked to a 727 push-button automatic transmission. The combination was the meanest-looking street rod I have ever seen. And, yes, It was extremely fast... Great engine....you need one (or five)....

On the short long runner, you calculate the length of runner on the intake from the groove (15"), and the rest of the runner is treated like plenum space (15"). The shorts did a better job at keeping the fuel suspended, particularly with the heat tubes installed. Without that, they are really cold sensitive. The shorts made torque higher in the rpm band.

What a work of art. I've seen max wedge exhaust header's but these are on another level. It's clear that chrysler meant business with this engine. They took complete advantage of the space allowed with the intake and exhaust on this platform. Solid rocker arms would be a nightmare to adjust but well worth the effort. These parts have to bring top dollar and cost a fortune.

Hi Nick. I had a 1961 dodge Pheonix just a dynamite car. It had a 383cu long cross ram intake, two 650 CFI carbs. The pistons came standard 4.25 plus 60 thous. oversized. The crank was 10 under all standard from the factory. 330 rated HP. The specs. were confirmed in the Chilton manual. My buddy had a 413 in a Chrysler 300G. Killer cars. Hindsight says pack them in a big plastic bag and put e'm away. We killed two high end collector cars. Shame on youngsters with no eye for the future. But no lack of sheer enjoyment at the time. I love the classic Mopars. I had a brand new 1969 340 Dodge Dart Swinger 4 speed stick with a 3/90 posi rear end. After a few years I noticed it was smoking on the left cylinder bank. I pulled the engine and found a broken piston ring. I had to bore it .030 over and replaced the pistons. I increased the compression ratio to 12:1 from 10.5: 1 with the heads and block shaved that raised the compression. Replaced the hydraulic cam with a solid lifter high lift over lap duration racing cam. High out put Mallory ignition system. And to top it off I used a Holly 1080 cfm 4 barrel carb on an Tarantula intake manifold and Hooker headers And a few other goodies. I ran c modified production class at the track. Turned low 11's over 120 mph in the quarter mile. The wheelies were real cool. Fun times. The car was light at less than 2700 lbs with what I believed to be over 425 hp. One great little engine. Balanced and blue printed. It only ran on 260 octain due to the high compression ratio. That was my all time favorite car. I've build engines since I was 14 years old, done so many I can't remember them all. LOL

Over the years it's always amazed me how mechanics can put things back together and ship it out with missing and broken bolts!! It's never too much hassle to do something right!! We only have 1 reputation and just as it's earned, it can be lost more quickly. It's awesome seeing you so excited Nick, can't wait to see how much of a power difference there is between the 4 barrel intake and the cross ram. Would be even more interesting to dyno it with a 2 ×4 barrel intake using the same carbs to compare against the cross ram..

The problem with running a solid lifter cam with this setup was that you had to take off the manifolds in order to check and reset valve lash, which is why in 1963 Chrysler came with the more compact ram manifolds that we now know as the Stage II and III Ramcharger, and you could get to the valves without having to take off the intake manifold. But at least MoPar was thinking out of the box as compared to Chevy and Ford, which I always admired them for.

Dad had a ‘59 Imperial with the 413. I supposed it was about 1964, when I would have been 13. We had just started on a vacation trip when Dad became aware of a sticky lifter noise. We stopped at a Chrysler dealer in a nearby town with no notice, all packed to travel! they figured out which lifter was the problem, pulled it with only the valve cover coming off, and we started out trip from there and had no problems. I recall that there were really no waiting room accommodations for a family!

Hey Nick...love your passion and knowledge. About 40 plus years ago I got a 426 Stage 3 Max Wedge in many pieces from a retired drag racer (that motor pushed his '63 wagon to the record for J Stock at the time). I was putting it into a V-Drive flat-bottom boat. I picked up a set of the loooong cross-ram intakes ($15, sold to a friend for $15...kicking myself to this day)...thought it would be fun and cool to try something different. With the motor I got the short-ram intake, and also a setup of Algon mechanical direct injection with short stacks. ANYWAY...When I stuck the long-tubes up against the MaxWedge heads to check fit...there was a 1/4" of head port showing outside the CASTING of the long tubes. That might leak I told myself.... MOPAR TO YA !!!

Completely off-topic, but I've gotta say that the darkened garage and the mood-lighting, with highlights on the work-area, is really working out great. Oh, what the hell - I even liked the quiet music in the background.

The 413 industrial version was used to power Sicard Runway Sweepers back in my early mechanics career. The intake wasn't the same. It was a huge single 4 barrel. The torque was amazing and this engine was tough as nails.

My brother-in-law had this same intake on his 440 engine in his 1968 Dodge Sweptline pickup. He tried several different carbs on the manifold including Holleys, Carters, and even Demons. I recall seeing a pair of Dominators on there once! The intake worked very well with that engine, regardless of the carburetor.

Interesting, I have 2 of those engines complete . My Uncle was a huge Mopar person and when he passed away a few years ago, me being a mechanic/car guy he left me his vast collect of cars and parts. I'm in no way a Mopar guy so my knowledge is lacking on Mopar's. Thats way ive been watching your channel for the past year or so. Your knowledge is epic!

26:38 The only I.C.E. I know of that doesn't require a harmonic balancer is the Mazda rotary engine, due to it not turning reciprocating motion into rotating motion, it's always rotational. Great show guys. Love the old MOPAR's. Have a nice day.

My dad told me back in the 70’s about when the muscle car wars between Chrysler, Ford and General Motors were going on he said as a rule most generally a Mopar would out run a Ford and a GM I found out my dad was right my first car In 1978 when I was 17 was a 72 Plymouth Cuda 340 some of my friends at school wanted to race me that Cuda beat a 74 Pontiac Formula 400 on the interstate, it beat a 1970 Mach 1 351 from 30 to 95 his front bumper was at the back of my door, my Cuda beat my cousins 1970 SS 396 Chevelle , beat a 72 Pontiac GTO at a 40 tromp and a 74 Javelin 360

Wonderful Video - Brought back a memory of the summer of 1971. I was able to put together a 413 (who knows what it came out of) and drop it into my 1964 Sport Fury. The Sport Fury had a 361 that was sort of worn out. Everything bolted up to the cast iron 4 speed trans. I had the upswept cast iron exhaust mainfolds. Really cool looking back then. Hope to see the video of this one back together.
