Hops & Gnarly

2 жыл бұрын

This week I’m making a simple IPA on my Brewtools B40… at least I thought it was going to be simple. We’re also celebrating two years of Hops & Gnarly. Season 5 starts now!
The Brewtools B40 uses a 34mm tri-clamp connection type in conjunction with a built-in pump and valve system to create a modular all-in-one brew system. The B40 has a touchscreen controller that not only controls your brew day but it's also used to install updates as the Brewtools operating system continuously improves over time.
Also included with the Brewtools B40 system is a lid, grain basket, recirculation hat, a three way valve, and everything else you need to start making beer.
From there you can choose from a laundry list of accessories, leaving plenty of room for me to grow with this system.
Now enough about the equipment, let’s make some beer!

Sulfur just straight up dissipates. Its extremely volatile. No need to really treat. Just kinda swirl the glass a couple of times. I would worry about the copper oxidizing the beer. Heavy metals are no bueno in terms of oxidation. It was just a couple of pennies though so who the hell knows haha. As always killer vid. Production is second to none. Congrats on your success.

Just as background, I've been a homebrewer for a little over 10 years. I used to get DMS like this in the past. With really lightly kilned grains, you have to keep that hour-long boil. If you have a lot of the lighter grains, you may even want to extend the boil period. DMS half-life at a full boil is about 40 minutes, so even a 90 minute boil may not be a bad idea.
@HopsANDgnarly
@HopsANDgnarly 2 жыл бұрын
I wasn’t thinking DMS but that’s certainly possible. Does DMS go full rotten egg? I think of it as more of a corn aroma. Great advice thank you!
@beckzach05
@beckzach05 2 жыл бұрын
@@HopsANDgnarly Depends on how long the boil goes! Most people default to a 60-minute boil regardless of their grain bill, which removes just over half of the DMS. At a 30-minute boil you still have over 50% of the DMS from the mash, and that higher concentration trends more to the 'sulfur' side than the 'corn' side. One of my WORST beers had this issue, and it was a SMaSH with Sorachi Ace. Turns out, if SA hops aren't stored perfectly they throw butter flavors. It was a pint of buttery cream corn, and I almost gave up drinking.

Hey Dan, nice video, sorry to hear the beer didn't turn out like you hoped but we've all had them if we are honest, B40pro user myself, 74 brew days done and pretty regular 90% mash and 80% BH efficiencies with my B40 processes, the lazer cut filter and the Trubinator are imo worthy upgrades and worth consideration for you further down the line, a 20 minute Vorlauf right before the sparge will give you 2-3-4 extra gravity points every time [it does for me] Also i never sparge exact amounts of sparge water, simply sparge whatever amount needed to hit the recipe pre boil volume, i came up short on pre boil volume a few times sparging exact amounts and find my method works very well, over sparged by 1.9 litres last time out and still hit the numbers...Bet you enjoyed the unboxing of the kit, so much shiny, enjoy the new system and some superb beer in your near future with it...subbed...

I always make a starter and never get sulfur. A one time investment in a stir plate and I always have happy/healthy yeast. We may call ourselves "brewers" but in reality all we do is make yeast food. The yeast makes the beer so whatever make the yeast happy is the way to go. (water profile, temperature, nutrients and time)

Thanks man! Yep Imperial ships these directly to me based on my brew schedule so I’m pretty confident it was something I did. I know it's been a long time, but I'm not sure about your pump speed during the mash. It looks too slow, did you take a temperature reading into the grain tube with an external thermometer ? It could be too low.
@Wevdaan
@Wevdaan 2 жыл бұрын
Like you mentioned , unfortunately it's sign of stressed yeast. It's to be checked: - Vitality - Viability - If it's a strain known to produce higher levels fo H2S, drop the yeast-air/02 contact time - Low FAN can cause it as well (watch out in case of adjunct use) - Supplement with Zinc to these kind of yeasts that tend to show high H2S production A healthy yeast should reduce sulfury compounds during the maturation phase, specially during the warm rest ("diacetyl rest"). Same reason with homemade hard seltzer often have this sulfury off-flavour. Same nutrient deficiency and yeast stress. Keep up the good work!

Hi there. I noticed that you don't filter hops in any way. It looks like you are putting all the hops into the fermentation chamber. I'm assuming that after the fermentation you are doing cold crash, am I right? Why you are not using any hop spider for filtering during the boil time? Did you notice any more hoppines with your method VS filtering hops during boil and dry hop?

This system has a whirlpool port and I use a wide filter in the bottom of the tank called the trubinator. As the wort recirculates through the chiller and back into the tank it creates a whirlpool and accumulates in the filter. Works incredibly well
