Cloudrider91 saying he was just an ‘easy one to make’ is absurd. Making a 100% new fighter model, animating movement for idle, walking, dash, all the attacks, designing all of his moves which seems extremely unique. Plant wasn’t made Instead Of another character, it was because some developer had an idea of a move set and after what must have been tons of deliberation they went through with it because the strength of the creative idea and execution would outweigh the backlash raised by entitled-feeling fans.

Although I do agree with your statement, I am disappointed that Isaac still isn't a playable character when he has been in top of the polls since Brawl for most requested. It's a shame really. So my disappointment isn't so much of the leaks not being true, it's disappointment that someone so many people want got the assist trophy treatment. But you can't please everyone I guess haha!

There's really no reason Pirahna Plant should be in the game over an actually highly requested character (and remember, Sakurai did a ballot asking for requests and then didn't deliver on it). Sakurai has himself to blame for being a troll. People are allowed to be upset at Sakurai trolling them. It is his game. He can do what he wants, but if he is going to insist on trolling the fanbase - he should expect the backlash.

He added the plant because he wanted to, and that's the troll I was referring to. If he wants to troll the fans he can. That's his right. My point is, he should be ready for the backlash if he insists on trolling the fans. He has done it many times in the past as well. It's something he is known for. Just personally, this one was overboard. Not only that, but whether or not the content in the game is good, they definitely botched this direct. No one was upset at the August direct, but plenty of people are upset at this one. Clearly they made a miscalculation in the way they handled their reveals. This should've been closer to what we saw in August, and what we saw in August should've been what we saw here. I don't think many would be disappointed if the last direct showed us Ridley, Simon, and K. Rool.

IIRC Sakurai and other smash devs said multiple times that they felt there were too many characters that relied on swords in the game, and although a lot of people want Isaac, you have to compare that to how much Ninty wants to shill Fire Emblem, considering it's now a behemoth. Geno comes from a single Mario game that wasn't developed by Nintendo. Banjo-Kazooie isn't developed by Nintendo. Most characters fans wanted come from games that are third parties, or are nintendo-published, but not developed, so the legal hoops you have to go through is something you have to weigh against how much that character adds. Goomba was also a character people requested, but maybe Sakurai couldn't find a good way to add him in as anything other than an assist. So what other Mario baddie could you add? Especially as something you can make quickly and give out for free, because maybe it'd be nice to even out the future roster at 80. Which, let's be reasonable here. There's a fucking ASSLOAD of content on one small-ass cart here. 74, soon to be 75 characters out of the gate in a fighting game that also has a ton of items, stages, music, art, and a story mode. If there was nothing to get people's hopes up like the multiple fake leaks, the reveal of a few new characters as usual, along with the story mode, would have made people more than happy with the direct. Also, there's nothing stopping them from adding ballot characters in as DLC later.

@@LouisAndPillz Phil Spencer, head of microsoft, has stated multiple times he'd be okay with a microsoft character getting into smash, so no real hurdle there. Ubisoft and nintendo have a super close relationship, so it'd be easy to get a Ubisoft rep. Blizzard has said they wanted a character in smash. Bethesda has too. Namco made the game so you'd think at least they would get a rep. And no, I think most people would still be disappointed in the direct. It was badly put together. They should've opened with world of light and then gone into spirits mode. Also, it probably shouldn't have been as long as it was. We don't really need them to explain brightness settings... the spirit mode part also went on for far too long. They also shouldn't have ended with Ken and Incineroar. People aren't really that excited for them. Imagine if they had ended this direct with a Ridley, Simon, or K. Rool. People would've been super happy. Instead we are left with a character no one wanted that's also not even finished... like talk about ending your direct on a wet fart. It was poorly put together, especially for a finale. This and the August direct should've been switched (and a few tweaks here and there). Would've worked much better. This just makes Sakurai feel like a troll or someone who is out of touch.

Piranha Plant is pretty dumb. I don't mind off the wall ridiculous character (Wii fit trainer, rob, mr. game and watch... all great and unexpected choices). However, those introduced new franchises to smash. Not only did we not need another mario rep, but we certainly didn't need pirahna plant over some over the more popular requests such as Toad, Waluigi, Birdo, etc... More so, if they wanted a dumb but iconic off-the-wall choice from Mario, why would they not choose a Goomba or a Koopa? Pirahna plant is just bad.

And you know what would catch more eyeballs than a weird character no one wanted? A character everyone wanted. Go watch any reaction video of the direct. Most people aren't happy, most people aren't even mad, they are just kind of confused when Pirahna plant is revealed. That's not the reaction you want.

@Link 64 In my opinion, it would open up a door that would be impossible to close. Anime characters like those featured in Jump Force would be the next big shoe in, and there would be an endless battle between fans on who else should be included. For example, imagine people arguing about whether or not Fortnite skins should be in Smash. Crash and Spyro would make more sense because of their gaming origins, but when you start bringing in characters and franchises with origins outside of gaming, I think it becomes too muddled. When the question shifts from "why?" to "why not?" I think we've lost our way.

I THINK the people complaining about the delay didn’t realize that the voiceovers in the cut scenes weren’t lip syched to the English dialog. They just overplayed it on top of the Japanese. So they were moving their lips long after the voice stopped. That’s when chat started whining about the syncing, so I think they just didn’t know what they were talking about. Then Damiani adjusted it and I think it actually became de-synced.

Whine whine whine whine. The ppl who think Incineroar is a waste of a character don’t realize how popular he is in Japan. Also Gamexplain saw through the leak and even the people who had predictions on their last video saw Incineroar as a very viable character due to his popularity. Also helps that there is always one new Pokémon per gen for every smash. Greninja being the last one. That’s why you never buy into leaks. Also Rex didn’t make it because they already planned the characters before the game was released, not because Sakurai didn’t think it was good enough to make the cut.

Anything not developed and published by Nintendo requires some legal hurdles to jump. Pokemon is easy because TCPI and Nintendo are pretty much intertwined. Mario characters are easy for obvious reasons, and Piranha Plant is the closest you'd probably be able to get to having goomba or koopa added in...who were, in fact, well-requested characters.

I don't disagree with the disappointment. The best thing here was definitely the story mode and they spent a lot of time on so much other stuff that I understand why they were losing hope. If I was making the *VERY LAST DIRECT* for this game before launch, I'd save the best characters for last- no question. But of course, in standard fighting game fashion, those DLC characters will most certainly be the ones everyone are *really* going crazy for. I cant stress this enough-- No one is DOWNPLAYING how big the game is, but when you have an event, expectations are set, leaks or not. Its all about the potential for surprises.

Sucks that the fake leaks turned interesting announcements into "This isn't what I was expecting, no thanks". Pretend the leak never happened and this direct was fine. Did not ruin anything previously announced, only added new features and characters. The cinematic trailers were great, especially the one at the end. Overall the direct has to be at least a 7/10. I can't personally give a low score to something that does not detract from my interest in the game, and I think we were spoiled by the last direct being a 10. Killed my hope for Banjo, but got me very interested in Spirits by the end, so overall I'm still in the same place for the game, which is hyped. Plus, I personally think Piranha Plant as a character is hilarious. I will say they shouldn't have showed off the Spirits mechanics until after the cinematic, though. Out of context it kinda looked like some shitty mobile game.

Ben Fitter I have no problem with there only being Ken, Incineroar and Piranha Plant - despite the fact that I want Isaac and Geno and the other Grinch leaks. I have gotten everything I wanted and any more is just icing on the cake. However, that doesn’t detract from the amount of filler in this Direct. Trophies being gone is a negative to me, and they’re replaced with more stickers, basically. The Spirits explanation could have been interesting if it were put in the right context - that I’d be using it in a story mode. But without that knowledge it is a mode that I will never ever touch, like the stickers in Brawl and the equipment in 4. And then they padded time with weird options, showing us stuff like the language options. I don’t need to see the options menu for a game in a Direct. Overall, I’m not disappointed that the leak wasn’t true - expect the worse, believe the best. However, there were a lot of detractors and negatives to criticize, and that’s what I have a problem with.

Everything that happened in the cinematic actually keeps up with either lore or the in mechanics of the characters. Inklings hiding inside ink, snake surviving the hit for several seconds because THE BEAM CANT FIND HIM (lol), both pits losing their wings after palutena is taken down. Bayo being all about evasion, lThe bullshit that wiifit trainer, duck hunt dog and villager were doing? All moves with invincibility frames, they all were trying to tank the hit. And yes, Kirby's warp star chargining up and going into light speed also keeps up with both canon and mechanics

It just means it's going to be very short on story, and more focused on gameplay. But there is a lot of gameplay here. There are the RPG elements of enemies becoming stronger and stronger the further you get and having to level up spirits to make your character keep up. Needing to find hidden switches or means of transport(lapras/rathalos) to make your way to new areas. Having that talent tree that makes you stronger. There is a lot of gameplay here that you don't get from a menu with a list of battles to pick from.

First time I've ever been annoyed at Kyle. Maybe he wasn't feeling well but the dude was complaining nonstop about Spirits and I didn't understand why. Why is it bad that Sakurai and his team try new stuff out? A challenge type mode where you collect a massive amount of characters is a joy. Only reason he complained was because he thought the story mode wasn't happening. Also, Sakurai literally showing off all the stuff in his game, including menus and such, is a great idea. It's honest and shows that he's proud of his teams work. It's very apparent that some Smash fans ALWAYS want more and can never be satisfied.

Spirits are a hard sell if you're not interested at all in the concept (like Kyle was). They also spent way too much time on it. 1 or 2 examples would have been enough, we didn't need 8. Also, the game comes out soon and it's the last Direct, where everyone comes together to get hyped - and then they show off the brightness settings...

It's also the first time for me. Kyle actually sounded super entitled which I am not used to with EZA. He was constantly complaining about in my opinion amazing additions. I actually loved Spirits mode and loved all the examples they showed how different and elaborate the spirits battles are. It seems to me like a single player mode I would love to spend time on playing. It's probably a case of quaility over quantity and I definitely enjoy the quantity in Spirits more. Just imagine the development team thinking of all the characters and how they could represent them in spirits mode. I laughed my ass off with the Gordo and Bullet Bill spirits battle, or the Smeargle as Inkling battle.

Yeah it's unfortunate that game "journalists" seem so biased against it just because it's not exactly what they wanted. They've included so much in this game, arguably too much, and yet somehow it's not enough for people. "All we want is Ridley" Ridley is in, people complain. K Rool is in, people complain. Story mode is in, people complain. No appreciation for how expensive it must be to actually get the licenses for all these characters and music and the like. "It was all bad news until the last bit" Bad news? Spirits isn't that interesting and I certainly won't be using them but how is that abysmal or bad news? It's literally just extra at this point. The problem is that they blew their load too early with the reveals. If say Ridley was saved for now, people would be more satisfied with the finale. Ken and Incineroar just fell flat. Also this Direct didn't feel as well conceived. It almost feels like the last Direct had more content despite being 15 minutes shorter. I agree, this game is BEEFY and I'm going to be playing it for years, but it wasn't a strong finale. Adventure mode looks cool at least.

However this might be obvious, but the 3 largest Positive takeaways for me were, 1- Ken & Incineroar look equally awesome to play with, 2- World of Light is not blowing me away or anything but it will still be fun to have a story mode for the game's context, and 3- It is beautifully heartbreaking when Sonic slows down to save Pikachu.
