Once you beat the game, if you make a file with the name Richter you can play through the whole game as richter belmont instead.

You're right, Symphony of the Night had the same Richter Belmont, just with an updated design (to his artwork) that for some reason wasn't reflected in his sprites, which were lifted from the prequel Rondo of Blood. *Except* for that one time where you encounter him in the Colosseum, probably cause he's just chillin on a throne and doesn't really move. So that's like three sprites where he suddenly _does_ resemble his new artwork. What can I say, SoTN was awesome but definitely a bit rushed in some areas. Long story short, Smash Richter is just flat-out Rondo of Blood Richter.

I know pretty much nothing about Castlevania, but this was probably my favorite reveal trailer. It's just so epic how Simon comes in, removes that hood and runs in to slay the ghost or demon or whatever that was. And then he's about to get killed by Dracula and Richter runs in and saves him. And the freaking music! So good!

Yes, in Symphony of the Night, you do fight as Richter in the Prologue. I believe it is the final stage of Rondo of Blood.
