Oni makes me feel bad for Akuma/Gouki. He wasn’t irredeemably evil, but an extreme Ansatsuken purist with a macabre code of honor, someone who tried to master the Satsui rather than lose himself entirely to it. So to see Oni, the inevitable result that essentially means death of personality for Akuma, is pretty harrowing.

However, he still retains some of it, because he goes by a warrior's code, he won't kill those who are weaker than him or at an obvious disadvantage (he spared Gen because of this), he doesn't normally challenge those weaker than him and he'll probably decline a challenge if he feels they are, and from what I can tell, when he kills somebody it's only because he previously stated the fight would be to the death and they consented. Akuma still retains *some* of his humanity but he's in a precarious place of flirting with the murderous urges brought about by the Satsui No Hado which puts him in danger of being taken over by it completely, which is where Oni comes in. Oni is Akuma completely engulfed by the Satsui No Hado, without any humanity or sense of honor left in him. His nature is that of a wanton, nihilistic megalomaniac who seeks only to kill and destroy anything he can and enjoys it.

According to Seth Killian of Capcom, Oni was (pre release) amazingly broken. Like, past Akuma in Super Turbo levels of broken. And in a last ditch effort to balance him, the team behind his development nerfed some of his crucial moves, options and resets. Unfortunately, they nerfed him a bit too badly. Now he is much more difficult to use than predicted. Which is sad, because I was hoping to main him. I still do, but now it is much harder. :(
