My biggest problem is that the inventory isn’t very responsive. It takes sometimes takes multiple tries to use a single item or switch through items. It’s a layer of jank that makes dealing with an inventory heavy game unfun

Yeah, I do appreciate that they're being ambitious with the inventory in how it let's you carry any object, use both hands (dual wielding!), and do neat interactions like the lighter and candle. But it's still rough. Maybe it needs just a little slimming down on the 'realism' for the sake of convenience. Like with candles, letting you select and put one down without needing to swap the lighter, or it doing an animation where it uses the lighter automatically so you don't need to switch to the lighter, drop the candle, switch back to the lighter, light it, in that sequence.

Honestly, I think 'sanity meters' are one of the silliest gameplay conceits. "Don't stay in the dark too long or you'll go iNsAnE!!" That being said, making the musical queues get more intense and adding little spooky effects as long as the player stays in shadows is cool. I'd be very I terested in seeing this exact system at work with zero UI and tutorials, an invisible system that dynamically adjusts the spookiness. Now, whether it's fair to still attach a fail state to it at that point is another matter. Perhaps, the best compromise would be keeping the tutorial but have it be vague. Instead of losing your SANITY and chugging pills because you're too far from a light source, just call it 'stress' and say it may have an effect on the character's mental state.

A lot of people seem to have thought that Silent Hills would've been exactly like P.T. which i always found odd, P.T. as the name states was just a playable teaser, it was never confirmed to be an actual showcase of how Silent Hills would've played yet many people adopted it,got inspired by it or made flat out copies of it as if it was a proper representation of the product we would've gotten from Silent Hills. P.T. was pretty damn scary but it wasn't really fun to play, on your own the chances of actually finishing the playable teaser would've been slim to none with how criptic it was so for the average person it was just walking around in an endless loop and then getting jump scared by the ghost without any way to hide,run away,fight back or do anything. It wasn't an actual good game, because it wasn't really a proper game, just an somewhat interactive teaser for a game we sadly never saw any proper gameplay footage.

@@Crawdoodle no, that was hyperbole. what i'm absolutely saying is that amnesia's success gave rise to a thousand copycats that follow the same boring formula of "walk around reading notes that tell a story while occasionally being chased by a monster you can't do anything about". they have almost no gameplay and they all rely on a good story to keep you playing...and none of them have a good story, because they're made by game developers, not writers, and because the medium requires a certain amount of interactivity which has to be integrated into the experience of frightening and engaging the player. fear is a very subjective thing and inducing it beyond the use of cheap jumpscares necessitates subtlety and a careful blend of gameplay and artistic elements. you can't just throw the player in a maze with no lights and call it done which is what a lot of these games do, and even if they did more than that it wouldn't make them good. is that enough for you?

Downpour was new at the time and was closer to the originals (and isn't too long.) Homecoming was more for the novelty and the simple combat. 4 is Long, has invincible enemies that chase you the entire game and most of the second half of the game is an escort mission.
