I really respect this game for the way it handles tough subjects. So many horror games/ movies use sexual assault and or mental illness as cheap plot devices. You know, rape for drama, metal patients as monsters. It never feels exploitative here.

Plot twist: The dog was actually Eddie's main high school bully. This thought is actually hilarious to me. Like, just a regular Rottweiler on all fours wearing a leather jacket and having a lit cigarette stuck in his dumb drooling mouth. The dog just barks at nerds twice his size while they flinch and shy away on the verge of tears and the dog yucks it up.

I wonder if Pat even noticed that Silent Hill is basically laughing at Eddie the whole time with Laura insulting him, the pizza in the bowling building and the upside-down hanged pig corpses with skirts in the boss fight zone (which are clearly supposed to represent fat guys). Maybe that's why he went nutter and nutter as the game progress. The town is basically doing what all those people he killed did to him.
@grimoireweiss52033 жыл бұрын
5 years later... Well Silent Hill is supposed to be a place where some people get drawn to. Our protagonists are going trough a journey to face their fears and feelings. There are other games but mainly SH2 gives a big hint that other characters are going trough something similar. I don't think it's a place that makes fun of one character but decided to give a trial to another. It judges everyone fairly but it's up to those people to succumb to it or face it. I feel like Eddie just sticks with his "run away from his problems" mentality. He just became a broken person and was unable to fix it. Like he even mentioned that "that dog was laughing at him". He became so twisted as the game went on that he switched form denying doing something bad to embracing it. Wish we had these kind of games but with AAA game quality and at least decent combat.
@Tw0DrunkGuys3 жыл бұрын
@@grimoireweiss5203 I like to think that, along with Angela's "burning staircase", the "frozen meatlocker" is a glimpse into Eddie's experience of Silent hill. Angela was a victim of a crime of passion, symbolised by the fire. Burning down the childhood she never had. Living through it again in a hellish landscape. Eddie was bullied by a lot of people. Treated COLDLY you might say. He in turn, grew icy cold in his heart. He is tormented in a frozen wasteland. James..... well, I'll not spoil the story, but he was broken by his wife's disease. He percieved it as a rotting away of who she was, a decaying of their life together. James is suffering through a Silent Hill that is full of neglect, rot, and ruin.

Also, I dispute that Eddie killed the dog "cuz he's a sociopath" he clearly felt guilty about it, as evidence from the scene in the bowling ally. He explicitly says "the cops aren't after me.... no one would ever forgive me." He ran to Silent Hill because he was scared and ashamed. It's only AFTER he's been in the town and being exposed to its horrors that he SNAPS and is now claiming psychopathic enjoyment by the time of this boss.

***** It's not sociopathy or psycopathy. I don't know the english term because my criminology classes were in french (it would translate to criminal thinking). In these type of people, the escalation of violence follows a predictable circle: the subject believes himself to be in control until something or someone makes him feel diminished and then takes the position of the victim, leading to anger and finally violence in order to return to a state of control. As these cycles repeat, we see a corrosion of internal dissuasive system: the subject feels more and more justified and has less and less remorse, and lose empathy toward their victims (Eddie goes from puking, to just shooting people at the slightest provocation). Subjects are also known to be unreasonably optimist (eating pizza in the middle of a town full of monsters), be egocentered (meaning they'll take care of what they need at the present moment, without being able to predict or care for the consequences of their acts) and be thrill seekers, who sometime commit crime for the fun of it (Which may explain why Eddie killed the dog). I'm not saying that Eddie was born evil, it's just that this combined with the bullying turned him into what he is, and he never took the chance to break the cycle before it was too late.
@KaisN9 жыл бұрын
Sigh, Pat. What are we gonna do with you? He kills the dog of the bully who bullied him most of his school life, and then the bully comes after him, after revenge for his dog. He feels incredibly guilty about the things he's done at the start, but the longer he spends in Silent Hill, the more apathetic and disjointed he becomes, until... well. This.

It's very clearly implied that he killed the dog of one of his bullies to get revenge, not for no reason. From the way he earlier said that the dog "walked all over" him, too, suggests that the bully might have actually used the dog to intimidate Eddie. Matt and Pat are very obviously oversimplifying Eddie's motivation. Eddie is also disqualified from being a psychopath because he super evidently has a very low opinion of himself. Psychopaths generally think very highly of themselves.

I think what makes this section so creepy is, as Pat pointed out a bunch, the fact that the place you're in can't actually exist. You just keep going down, down, and down some more into absolute darkness. Even creepier than the prison are the corridors you're walking through towards the end of the section. Normal looking walls, old-fashioned wooden tiled floors, again: the all consuming darkness. Add to it the fact that you get to witness the personal hells for Angela and Eddie (considering Eddie is surrounded by bodies when you find him, I can only imagine that everywhere he looks there's someone insulting him). This is hell done right in a game: atmospheric and mind-bending. When you compare it to Homecoming or Downpour where you're literally taken to some lava inferno factory or flooded prison, respectively, and it really highlights how less is more when it comes to the visual design.

Abstract Daddy, also known as Ideal Father, is a monster James Sunderland encounters in Silent Hill 2. It is a manifestation of Angela Orosco's traumatic memories of her father, Thomas Orosco, or brother, raping and sexually abusing her on a bed. James first faces this monster as a boss near the end of the Labyrinth, while smaller, weaker, variants can be found later on in the Lakeview Hotel. The Abstract Daddy appears as two figures lying on a bed, covered in a "blanket" of putrid skin, with the two forms apparently having intercourse. The two figures seem to be trapped in a rectangular board, with the "male" or upper figure's arms and legs dangling out the bottom. On the bottom of the monster is a long vertical slit. It moves on all fours, and the lower portion of the beast has the appearance of a bed with four posts. The Abstract Daddy represents Angela's father, Thomas Orosco, and/or brother, hanging over her on a bed.[2] This is highly suggestive of the abuse she took from them. It is also noted that the figure beneath screams in torment, which is likely another representation of Angela's abuse, while their "mouths" resemble a vaginal orifice, further implying sexual abuse. The room the monster is fought in represents Angela's uterus. On the fleshy walls of the room are holes with pistons making thrusting motions, akin to a penis thrusting in and out of a vagina. These further evoke Angela's perspective of her rape: a mechanical, unescapable inhuman experience. It is possible every piston is symbolic of how many times she was molested (23). Later in the game, smaller versions of the boss monster make an appearance at the Lakeview Hotel, which may be an indication/foreshadowing to the player that Angela may be in the hotel somewhere. The smaller variants may also be representative of Angela's brother, while the bigger and stronger boss model is "Thomas". Another possible theory is that it represents abusive masculinity, in that James (SPOILER omitted), while she was in bed. This may be why both Angela and James can see the monster, as they are both involved with the mentality at hand. ~Official Silent Hill Wikia
@BornRemaining9 жыл бұрын
The Silent Hill 2 BradyGames strategy guide by Dan Birlew erroneously refers to Abstract Daddy as "Doorman". However, this makes no sense because Abstract Daddy is meant to resemble a bed, not a door. "Doorman" is not used in any other guides.

From my understanding (and I'm sure other people have commented this as well) The dog Eddie killed most likely belonged to the kid bullying him, and he killed the dog as a way to get revenge, then shot the actual bully once he showed up. The boat warning sign isn't for prisoners, it's for Kenny. Kenny's stuck there too. Everything is the exact same as what James sees only instead of Mary, it's just a floating boat.

I can't even blame him because I did the exact same thing the first time I played this, but boy is that puzzle painful to watch when you know the solution. I'm having flashbacks of how long it took me to solve that. Edit: Oh thank goodness, you figured it out quickly. You're a bright young man, Pat.

I like how even Eddie basically pointed out that this silent hill pulled in murderers. (James/Eddie/Angela) so there's more weight when he acts like "your here for a reason buddy"

I just watched the entire playlist for this game (or what there is of it as of this time) and while the game itself is unsettling I think the most... eerie part is how mellow Pat is.

Hearing about how that dog died broke my heart. Poor thing. also this applies to the last video but I might as well make note of it here -- James repeatedly trying to touch Angela, even trying to comfort her, shows what a shmuck he is. Like you'd think, after she freaked out that first time, that he'd remember and not try to do it again. ALSO on the subject of self defense -- the Canadian Criminal code excuses self defense as justification only to a certain extent. You can only defend yourself in proportion to what the situation calls for, so be careful.

I really love the way Eddi's story plays out, because James never makes fun of him or anything, but when Eddie accuses him of doing it, you realize you probably did it in your own head whenever you saw him...... or maybe I'm just a terrible person.

The grammatical error in Eddie's subtitles really threw me off.
@Tamacat3889 жыл бұрын
Well...you see it's symbolic of Eddies stupidity. It adds to the scene and allows the player to see how far off the deep end Eddie has gone.
@JVarley90019 жыл бұрын
The "yer" I understand, it's the "your" when he should have had a "you're" that bothers me. I could see it that way, but that's a pretty big lean on the Fourth Wall.
@Tamacat3889 жыл бұрын
Eh, I was just joking anyway. Playing the "all errors are just symbolism" card that Silent Hill fans like to play now and then.
@JVarley90019 жыл бұрын
That is a card I was not aware of. --------------------------------* THE MORE YOU KNOW
@RipOffProductionsLLC9 жыл бұрын
Mr. Creazil I knew this card existed, but have only ever seen it deployed in Evangelion related discussions... God do Eva fans love pulling "but that's how it's SAPOST to be! It's part of the DEEP and MEANINGFUL symbolism of the story!" when ever anyone criticizes the show/manga/movies.

Did that boss fight just play out like a really bad version of the fight between Revolver Ocelot and Solid Snake in MGS1? Ya know with Eddie using the Colt Single Action Army Revolver and James and Eddie running around shooting eachother in a boxed in style room... No? Just me? Ok...

11:48, and why would it? There's no part in this game where you're far enough away from a target for spread to matter. Maybe everyone's just use to the unrealistic depiction of shotguns.

Michael Silva That would only further its accuracy and my point.
@ShinZmMusic9 жыл бұрын
A shotgun's spread is defined by three factors: 1. Barrel Length 2. Presence of/type of barrel choke (these can be internal and thus, not visible) 3. Shot type/Gauge. The go-to ammo for defense is either 00 or 000 Buckshot, which is usually 7 large pellets with a larger amount of gunpowder. Assuming Jame's is using that - even without a choke - The spread of that shotgun isn't going to be terribly noticeable until about 25-30 yards. (educated guess). 9 times out of 10, shotguns defy reality in video games. XD
@zoobyzoob9 жыл бұрын
ShinZmMusic I was basically going to post this in my original comment but I'm glad you summed it up to. I can only think of a few games off the top of my head that treat shotguns in a near realistic way at all.
