I could also tell Angela was abused by the constant apologizing.
@matthewleclair31895 жыл бұрын
Another detail I noticed was that as soon as James asked if Angela's mother lived in Silent Hill (which I think most people would find is a reasonable assumption), she immediately becomes very suspicious of how James would know about that, showing some insight into how her abuse led to her developing a natural distrust of men. In her own anxiety/racing thoughts, she thought the only way he could possibly know about that is if he stalked her, and the only reason he'd stalk her is... well, y'know.
@KageMinowara5 жыл бұрын
@Kaebee Is that a sign of someone who's been abused?
@kate78965 жыл бұрын
another thing that clued to abuse was her getting defensive when she thought James didn’t believer her. Victims tend to be accused of lying, especially in domestic sexual abuse cases
@Ankylosaurus_mangiventris4 жыл бұрын
KageMinowara Yes because people who’ve been abused sometimes can always apologize as they fear they’ve done something wrong as if they did with their abuser, bad things would happen. So they’re apologizing out of habit to avoid that, pretty much. It’s actually a common thing. I’ve sadly seen it in a few people in my time.
@kierancampire4 жыл бұрын
Hey, someone who's been through that and lives with/has many friends that have, all these comments are yeah, telling a truth to abuse and how it affects people, i know i relate to a lot of these things Another side to the apologising thing that no one has said, but i myself and most other people i know of share, is thatwe apologise out of guilt, we all think that we did something to deserve the abuse, that the abuse was correct in their actions, they were only doing it because they care, they wouldn't do it if we didn't do *insert blank*, so apologising comes from that Also, more so commonly with people who have experienced sexual abuse as a child they can have a childish personality/switch, and a few times she has exhibited childlike mannerisms which can point to that It's scary/sad/good the attention to detail and how realistic they made it with these subtle indications

Edan R Yeah, I'm really enjoying this voice acting. I don't know if they did it on purpose or not (voice acting never got gud until the early 360 era), but the quality helps lend to how off center this entire plot is.
@joeysingingchannel10 жыл бұрын
That right there is a chunk of why the new games just didn't work as well. The Downpour/Homecoming characters were all too normal or overtly strange/silly. In SH2, every scene with Angela and James feels like it's missing two or three lines of dialogue between each line, so it's basically like watching two institutionalized people talking. It's really unsettling and masterful. You get the ethos of everything unsaid between the lines that are said. I've read novels worth of character analysis on this game. Compare that to the likes of Josh or Murphy? You just can't.
@LaithKhalil10 жыл бұрын
Joey's Singing Channel it is a case of "so bad it's good". I really doubt these characters have or were intended to have a ton of depth, but the fact that there are so many holes in their background and story begs the question of might be there. The new games were just trying to fix an objective flaw in the old games (shitty voice acting) but lost that " it's not a bug but a feature" quality of bad voice acting.
@joeysingingchannel10 жыл бұрын
In some cases it might have been a case of Japanese translation, but I don't think there's any "bad" voice acting here. The goal was to be surreal, and they did it. And when every creature (minus the bugs) was meticulously made to be a reflection on James's psyche, I don't think you're giving the rest of the game enough credit. It's really not by accident this is a survival horror masterpiece.

I love the voice acting in this game. James comes off as totally normal, masking all the crazy going on in his head. Everything about Angela's voice is vulnerable and erratic with a hint of childlike, making her deeply off-putting, but also sympathetic. She's an unstable adult, but parts of her mind are stunted at the emotional level of a child.

Man, Maria is such a good character. I think she's an even better character than Pyramid Head in their symbolism. PH to me is much more heavy handed, as far as heavy handedness goes in this game. Spoilers, maybe. Pyramid Head is James guilt after what he did to Mary and it represents the way James punishes himself. That's about all he is, a totem for his guilt. Maria, on the other hand, is his guilt from before Mary died. It's Silent Hill rubbing in his face, like, "Oh, this is what you wanted, right? This is who you wanted Mary to be but instead you got the sick invalid." James is constantly being asked whether he really loved Mary or if he will continue to be selfish. It's cool how the story adapts to this. If you spend a lot of time with Maria instead of searching for Mary, James ends up being selfish and leaving with Maria. God this is such a good game.

*_Silent Hill fact of the day_*: the Creepers/Giant Roaches aren't the only monsters that are part of Silent Hill's metaphysical design. The Mandarins, which you find later, are the basis of the Closers on Silent Hill 3 You guys missed some nice details after the scene with Angela. On the ground, there was a torn picture, with a mother, father, a daughter and brother. That's problably Angela's family, ripped apart between her and her father, relating to her story. Also, on Room 109, you found two door: the one to Angela. and the other one with wooden bars on it and a small teddy bear besides it, also symbolic to Angela's story I have one request: go towards Silent Hill Historical Society, if you haven't continued playing yet. There's something _really nice_ there

@gtaIVlord10 жыл бұрын
***** Indeed, but not so much for SH2. After the first Silent Hill, Alessa's influence isn't so strong as it were when Cheryl and her became one (_and the same_) again and her nightmare became reality. On Silent Hill 2, the metaphysical influence, which was there since time immemorial, was what had effect on the town and surrounding areas. The "supernatural power" of Silent Hill is much closer to something like Stanisław Lem's Solaris, instead of a Judaic-Christian god. Only on SH3 Alessa's power had the effect it used to have.

I vote Leave, even though the happiness of it is kinda inconsistent, but in water doesn't have any of the cool ambiguity of the other endings and to me that is more inconsistent.
@nathaneskin35729 жыл бұрын
Jason Bissainthe Leave isn't that happy to me. I mean, he still has to live with what he did forever. It's not as sad as in water, and it doesn't have the horrible implications of Maria or Rebirth, where James slips the rest of the way off the deep end, but I wouldn't exactly say it's happy either.
@hazardousjazzgasm1299 жыл бұрын
I find it extremely touching considering that Mary wanted to adopt Laura. Obviously considering the circumstances of her death, it's still dark but I found it so touching and respectful to Mary that it makes me feel joy for both James and Laura, a second chance at happiness. It definitely still has that brooding sense of tragedy, so you make a very fair point.

As far as the extra modes European releases of games got, you need to remember that back in the PS2 era the EU release of a game made in Japan was typically four to twelve months behind the US one, and many developers used this delay to fix or enhance the game (sometimes explicitly to reward the patience of fans). Konami were particularly good for adding extra stuff; MGS2 and Silent Hill 2 came with Making Of bonus discs loaded with material.

I've always had a vague theory that there's something up with the relationship between Mary and Laura and cats, because the mural on the wall you see Laura on is of a bear and a cat together (and you find Laura playing with teddy bears later and a certain someone mentions Laura loves bears in Born From A Wish) and when you talk to Laura in the hotel she draws a cat in the dust on the window as she talks about Mary. I'm willing to believe that they're probably both just throwaway details that I'm giving too much importance too, but that's always stood out to me anyway.

Actually Pyramid Head is much more part of Silent Hill than any other "Monster", from all the comics, lore and interviews I've come across (canon and somewhat noncanon) they state that Silent Hill draws people to it that feel, consciously or unconsciously, that feel that they need or deserve punishment. A sort of atonement, see the demons in Silent Hill take the shame of the characters inner demons, their traumas and "monsters", whereas Pyramid Head is the only one to stay the same for all just like the City: Because he represents the one true demon they can't kill, he represents their reason for being there, he represents their need for punishment which is why he is the punisher; He can only be stopped or "die" when the characters reason to stay in Silent Hill dies, when they come to terms with their inner demons. Pyramid Head murders other monsters because he's the ruling trauma, the ruling monster and the ruling reason for them. He's the city of Silent Hill personified... Slow, dirty, grueling and in agony. But with unending purpose.

An interesting hypothesis indeed, but Pyramid Head is a rather peculiar monster, one whose continued meaning and placement has become more and more unclear with time. I think that you are rather close to spot-on, but only in the case of Silent Hill 2. The existence of THE Pyramid Head in additional games in the series is often dubious at best, and outright ridiculous at worst (of course, his ridiculous and completely unimportant appearances are usually in spin-offs, which doesn't really matter) because of the characters whom he torments. In some cases it just doesn't make sense for him to appear.

You say you're not going for a particular ending but you're sure examining that photo and knife a lot, Pat. One interesting thing is you don't even have to shoot Pyramid Head in that encounter (it takes a lot longer if you don't though). He just GTFOs eventually. It was probably set up that way in case the player ran out of bullets rather than any symbolic thing though. The Lying Figures were never based on condoms Pat. Someone is obviously "lying" to you about that part. My sister looks creepily like Maria's ingame model. Makes what happens later kind of unsettling. And stop calling me a shit kid :c

Thanatos388 Guess what? A whole lot of human psychology revolves around sexuality. And if people are too plebian for your tastes, the people who developed the game are as much human beings as the people playing them. So they probably thought about it a lot too. Hence why the monsters are depicted as metaphors for sexuality (sometimes).
@LaithKhalil10 жыл бұрын
fluffyzhangfei or it was a technical modeling choice. A lot of game development is exactly that. To make monsters all one smooth texture has got to be easier than modeling and running with complex monster models. Occam's razor is really a good way to think about these things.

So my guess is that Maria is a projection of what James deep down wished Mary could've been.?
@RedJester688 жыл бұрын
I think you're on the right track. I kind of see it as him projecting his sexual desires onto Mary during her terminal illness and Maria is sort of a fulfillment of that.

"I want the ending to be natural!" *Looks at photo of dead wife* *Looks at dead wife's letter* *Looks at knife* *Looks at photo of dead wife again* *Edit, again:* Hooooly shit! Thank you so much, everyone~! >w< I'm sorry if it seems like I was just milking it. I kind of needed it after um... Something happened to a family member of mine, and I found out that you can actually read about it on several news sites, and some of the comments... And then this person just comes out and says something like "aren't you the one with the horrible fan fics?" and some people were like, "OMG you're right!" So I guess the fact that I apparently made something that's infamously bad shocked my already shocked state. At LEAST critique the fics *on the sites I put them on.* So again, thank you soooooo much! But don't keep me from enjoying Matt and Pat... The same way I was trying to. Edit: *Tch* Thanks a whole fucking lot. Yes, I've wrote some years ago. I'm so fucking embarrassed now. Anyone else think a LP of Silent Hill 4: The Room would be a good idea?
@PublicEnemy0410 жыл бұрын
I really appreciate Matt and Pat holding back along the cutscenes and much of the game. It's funny because the reason I wanted them to do the LP was to giggle and squirm at some of the funnier aspects of SH2, but I'd forgotten what a tone setter this game was, even to this date. Also, it doesn't seem like Pat's going for any-one ending *specifically*. Thus far, he's been following the requirements and "anti-requirements" for all the base three.

I love it how you explain the game as it progresses. I don't think the face of Maria and Mary are the same. Sato Takayoshi said in a interview that the polygon count for Maria and Mary are exactly the same, but the polygons are rearrange differently therefore changing the skull shape. Either way you can tell a lot of thought went into this game!

I actually really like Pat's tidbits of lore on the game. Also i always thought Maria's design was meant to reflect what James wanted Mary to be, like he wanted her to be less reserved and more sexual. I feel like he just remembers Mary and their relationship through rose tinted glasses now she's gone.
