Wait a minute. Oh, Goddamnit. That little girl that screamed and ran away when she saw Murphy standing over Charlie was supposed to be Cunningham, wasn't it? They even have her the same green eyes as Cunningham. She wasn't seeing Charlie dead on the ground: she was seeing Coleridge, hence the "Why did you do that? He didn't do anything to you!" stuff she was saying. Also, I'm pretty sure that if she'd been around to see it (but she wasn't, which was the point), the Boogeyman who actually did the deed would've been Sewell. And then later she's next to the wheelchair-monster, still looking like a little girl, because of the horrific feeling that came with seeing her strong father reduced to a husk of his former self. And leading up to that point was A) her seeing Murphy standing over her father's almost-dead body and B) being chased by Murphy while she's trapped in such a young and helpless body. And it's only when she finally reaches her father that the floor gives out under Murphy's feet and he's whisked away, because no matter how weakened and helpless he's become, he's still trying to protect her from the Boogeyman. God FUCKING damnit! That's actually pretty great subtext, but it's conveyed so fucking terribly! Why couldn't Cunningham's "fight" with Murphy start with her flashing back to the bit when she finds Murphy and Charlie/Coleridge, and then the player takes control of Cunningham fleeing from Murphy until she finally reaches the relative safety that her father represents. Things would need to be adjusted to fit with Cunningham's point of view, but who cares? That'd be awesome! There'd be the sense of helplessness that comes with being a strong character forced down to the level of a child, the urgency of escaping whatever monstrous form Murphy assumes in her mind (which is hopefully more impressive than 'raincoat and gasmask with cinderblock hammer'), and then the final escape from said monster that only comes when she reaches out and takes her father's hand while coming to terms with the fact that no matter what state he's in, he's still her father.

Wait, when officer DickBag smacked the Good Cop in the face with a baton, wouldn't the autopsy show that he was hit with a blunt weapon? Also, wouldn't the circumstances seem suspicious to anyone? A good guy, who was friends with moiphy, who was up for parole and pretty much a model prisoner, was murdered by moiphy for no real reason. Officer DickBag, who Good Cop had reported to be a badguy who did evil stuff, came upon the scene. That, combined with the blunt force trauma, and I have a difficult time believing Officer DickBag got away scotfree.

Sad thing is, this game had a few really good ideas. Like Murphy being Cunningham's boogeyman all along and he just didn't see it. That reveal was *really* cool. Too bad it did the same thing as Homecoming and used those good ideas in a plot that just fell the fuck apart all over the place.
@electricbayonet210 жыл бұрын
I think one of the biggest problems was the number of antagonists and, more specifically, the overlap between Murphy and Cunningham's monsters. The worst example is the fucker in the wheelchair. Murphy had absolutely no reason at all to see Officer Coleridge as a crippled wheelchair monster on life support because he had no way of knowing that's the condition he was in. Hell, the entire reason he looked like a monster was because that's how Cunningham came to see him in that shape, not because Murphy tossed him into a combine harvester made of acid. I really like the notion of Murphy being Cunningham's boogeyman, but why on Earth did they use the same character model for every version of the Boogeyman? Did the town run out of cosmic abomination-dollars and have to get the Boogeyman to pull double-duty for both Murphy and Cunningham?
@Kit94210 жыл бұрын
electricbayonet2 To be fair, the model they used for the Boogeyman in this game was also just super duper lazy. And I'm normally the last person to complain about giant dudes in trench coats and gas masks because I'm all for that shit, but for a Silent Hill antagonist, that's really as vanilla as you can possibly get. That and it had no symbolism. What's the reason for the gas mask, trench coat and cinder block hammer? What's the connection to Murphy and his subconscious? Fuck all if I know. Also, Murphy being antagonized by the Wheelchair Coleridge abomination doesn't make any sense whatsoever when the game gives you the choice not to kill him in the flashback. Making his whole role in the story completely nonsensical and pointless, because if you didn't kill him, Silent Hill would know that. That's the point. Silent Hill knows all the bad shit you've done or thought about doing. It should be Sewell going through the devil's dickhole because of what he did, not Murphy, not if you play him as a good guy. So the game essentially just negated its whole plotline by giving you that choice, regardless.
@electricbayonet210 жыл бұрын
Kit942 Honestly, I expected the reveal to be that Sewell was the Boogeyman for both Murphy and Cunningham, which would've at least explained why there was so much overlap between the two's personal hells. I thought the Murphy/Phillip Seymor Childmolester reveal was a red herring around the point when the Boogeyman murdered the illusion of Charlie and the child version of Cunningham witnessed it. She walks in *just* in time to see Murphy standing over the body (which I thought she saw as her father, not Charlie) and start running away while he pursues her. And then the resolution between the two would center around the fact that Murphy *wasn't* the Boogeyman after all: Cunningham was just blind to the fact that it was Sewell lurking in the shadows the whole time and Murphy was just as much a victim of all this as she was. At least then the bad ending where Cunningham wakes up in prison with Murphy in Sewell's place *sorta* makes sense. In essence, she destroyed the person who Murphy actually was and turned him into an actual monster while Sewell got off scot-free.
@Kit94210 жыл бұрын
electricbayonet2 Oh my God. You nailed it. That's perfect. Sewell should've been the Boogeyman. That would've fixed nearly *everything* wrong with the story, holy shit. Now I'm just sitting here wondering why the fuck *they* didn't implement that into the story, because it seems so fucking obvious. And it would've filled so many plotholes. Well...except for the gaping void that is Wheelchair Man. His purpose in the story...still doesn't make much sense because when you choose not to join Sewell and refuse to kill Coleridge, there's no reason for him to torment Murphy, because it wasn't Murphy's fault that Sewell was an asshole. Unless it's supposed to be a different type of guilt thing. "I didn't stop Sewell from killing Coleridge, oh no, I may not have killed him with my bare hands, but I'm still an asshole for making this scenario possible in the first place", or something.
@Apkans10 жыл бұрын
Well.. let's not go that far. Still plenty wrong with the story. Remember that there is an actual endings where he DID kill her father, so then the story would break down again. This game is a true mess. Hardly any notable storytelling throughout the game untill you reach the end, and those last 20 minutes decide what the game's story actually was, making it multiple possible stories that pretty much contradict eachother, leaving you without a story in the end. For example, if you get the best ending, he didn't do anything wrong, save for stealing a cop car. Now, I can't imagine someone being so torn up about that, that the masochism/psychology storyline could fly. But atleast the stupid "getting haunted by copcars" sidequest would make sense.

Let me tie up some loose Ends (Went into full detail earlier.....buuuuuuuuut, KZbin doesn't like you clicking the player or another tab and hitting a key on a keyboard making me go back a couple pages and lose ALL OF IT before i was able to post it.) All of this information i credit to TVTropes. So to paraphrase. A bunch of people you see in Silent Hill are stuck there on Loop basically like Groundhog Day. One of the Ending's is this for Murphy. You could use the UV light to investigate the DJ's disappearance, he was basically dragged into the Otherworld. Whenever the DJ got a request, it was from Silent Hill itself, when it dedicated it to someone, it was basically a signal for the monsters to sic the person that go the dedication (3 Guesses who that was up til you meet the DJ, and 2 guesses for who got it when Murphy meets him.). The Postman is basically a Manifestation of Silent Hill's will and has been there since the town's founding (Sometime in the 1860's) The Dolls that are sexualized are from Anne's Silent Hill, but it's not explained outside of the Tie In Comic which follows her. Basically it's from Guilt for cheating on her Boyfriend/Husband (Think the latter.), i assume that's one of the things she did in order to get Murphy Transferred. Matt got the Canon Ending, unlike the other games where literally all of them can be canon, this one has just that one as the canon one. Killing and Sparing monsters effects the ending, but obviously Matt didn't murder enough to complicate his ending due to Pat's insistence on just ignoring alot of enemies. Murphy was raised in an Orphanage, hence the Orphanage stuff. Murphy stole a police car and led police and a long police chase in order to get put in prison in order to get at a chance at his son's killer. "Silent Hill becomes washed out in torrential rain - representing the prison showers where Murphy encountered a child molester, and the murder of his son - and electricity (Murphy's fear of execution for his crimes) arcs across the landscape whenever Murphy travels into the Otherworld. Murphy also sees a lot of fire during his trips to the Otherworld, as always symbolic of Hell." (I straight up Copy Pasted from TVTropes for that one.) Which is why it's called Downpour. Weirdly enough, this is the only other game in the series other than 2 to imply the Town itself is Sentient and has it's own agenda outside the cult (Yeah, thinking back the Cult had NOTHING to do with this game.). And that's everything.

I'll give Downpour Credit for one thing. That the person Silent Hill is TRULY focusing isn't the Protagonist, no, he was brought there Because of Silent Hill's REAL target. And THAT is a good twist. And really when it comes down to it, i'd rather a game just be god awful rather than mediocre with good ideas. Because with the former i can either just get mad or laugh at it, and watch it sell poorly (usually.). With a game with good ideas, but poor execution, i'm usually more sad than anything else. I feel sad because there was wasted potential. And at the end of the day, that's what Silent Hill Downpour is: A Game that could have been good, could have been REAL good with some more time and care.

...Wow, there were a LOT of good ideas for this game. So many good ideas, but the ending sequence just didn't make any sense. So, Murphy DIDN'T kill Napier in their path. Already, that's stupid, since that was the whole premise for Murphy's Silent Hill. "Revenge doesn't fix anything." Kinda defeats the purpose when Murphy never actually took revenge. I like that Cunningham saw Murphy as the Boogeyman, but the fact that you were able to die as the big invincible monster...not so much. And it's clear why she saw Murphy as Boogeyman, with the evidence pointing toward Murphy having killed Coleridge, but...wow. I was still really interested in the story until the end, and I like what they were going for, but it just wasn't executed that well. I still don't think the game is all that bad, but it's not really that memorable. Wasted potential, really.

But IN THE SCENE OF HIS TRAUMA which he's not remembering they don't even turn on the water in the showers! The opening scene where he remembers killing the child murder... the devs remember to have the water running. The whole event where the haunting memory he has that makes him experience silent hill... alright admittedly there is a very very interesting idea here, i actually found myself having Emotions about the story towards the end... but the execution was just so fucking weak that nothing really felt as powerful as it should have. the exposition was simultaneously too heavy-handed and too vague to make you actually understand it on an emotional level - like, ok, we get it, his kid died, he went to jail to kill the guy who did it, interesting. but all that car "symbolism" is so off the mark! the point isn't the fact that he stole a car!! and the water theme only becomes relevant like 3/4 through the game when we realize his son's body was dredged up from a lake. now obviously we don't need or want to understand everything from the beginning, but there should at least be an inkling as to why that's significant to the character, or else it has no impact on the player. the wheelchair guy just seems like a generic "creepy malformed guy in a wheelchair because that's scary, right?" and again, only in the last 10% of the game do we make the connection. sure we start putting the pieces together that sewell tried to get murphy to kill frank, and at least i feel the pacing of that was decently done, but there's no indication until much later that this is at all related to the wheelchair guy. also, GOD did there really need to be so many fucking notes? especially in the monastery, you could easily figure out that they're doing awful things to the kids there without so many documents saying "help me they're doing awful things to us" or "this kid is a shit, let's do more awful things to him." and what relevance did that really have to the rest of the story? seems like it existed purely to be "dark and evil" without actually tying into any of the characters' arcs. the part where you become the bogeyman is cool in concept - just like it's implied the monsters you fight in other silent hill games are sometimes just actual people who are distorted in the character's perspective (though the extent to which that is true is variable and debatable from enemy to enemy), here we see the player character becoming a monster from someone else's point of view. but then when you're actually playing that part, it's just... walk slowly forward and hit everything with a big slow unwieldy hammer. there were some cool core concepts but it mostly just fell so flat because it was either horrendously overdone to the point of cheesiness, or it wasn't explored enough. why does murphy keep hearing those convenient nuggets of wisdom? what's so important about ricky? or do his letters just exist to remind us that prison is bad and cops are mean? why isn't the significance of rain better explored and implemented? why did i waste my time writing all this? tl;dr the game would be better if: 1) the graphics, animation, controls, etc. had more effort and polish; 2) the pacing of the story was more appropriate so as to make the player feel invested and intrigued; 3) the enemies and environments were more reflective of said story and didn't feel like some cheap haunted house. idk man it's 2 in the morning four and a half years later why am i even here.

You can see glimmers shining through of what they wanted for the game, and it's hell of a lot more Silent Hill then Homecoming ever will be.

Sewell said, "Finish the job," and gestured to Coleridge. He meant finishing their deal! Murphy did kill Napier. The power was out because of the riot, therefore no cameras. Murphy walks away in a different prison uniform because that's the one he was wearing in Silent Hill. It all happened. They didn't take a freakin' nap by the bus. That ending is the canon ending by the way. It all holds up. The reverse ending you mentioned is the first ending I got as well because I didn't want to hurt her so she ended up killing me. It meant she actually killed Murphy and now she's trapped in Silent Hill forever. Didn't learn her lesson about revenge. Bummer.

I know I'm one year late but I really dont think thats what Sewell meant. He was speaking about something that already happened not what was happening there and then, but what do I know you could be right. Either way, the game is even more shit for not being clear about a pretty important plot point of its story. It baffles me that the old Silent Hill games which left a lot to your interpretation and were pretty obscure and subtle are way more clearer in their storytelling.

The way I see it, Murphy's in Silent Hill because he feels responsible for what happened to his son and to Frank. He feels he should have protected his son, which is why after killing his Bogeyman, it has it's face changing between his own and Napier's: he thinks he's as much to blame for Charlie's death as Napier. As for Frank, he feels that, if he hadn't been willing to make a deal with Sewell so he could kill Napier (which he couldn't even bring himself to do), then Frank would never have been in any danger; he may not have done the deed himself, but he gave Sewell the opportunity.

Having watched Homecoming and Downpour playthroughs back-to-back it's not even close, Downpour is superior. It at least has some decent and original ideas but it executes them so poorly. Homecoming is just as incompetent mechanically if not worse and is filled with nothing but re-hashes and poorly tied-in movie elements.

I'm seeing so many apologetic comments about how this game had really cool ideas and things in it, or how it would've been totally cool with nothing but minor adjustments, that I simply HAVE to state this: This game is fucking garbage and nothing about it is smart, scary, innovative, interesting or cool. Fuck this game. Come at me

finowa No one is denying that it's garbage, most people just realized that it HAD potential if the right amount of competence and direction was placed in them. Downpour is just like Alpha Protocol or I Am Alive, those games had janky mechanics and horrible graphics, and all in all, not even worth a half priced game, but one can see that with the right amount of polish, the game would be good enough to be called a game worth your time.

Murphy obviously rustled the night stick from one of the veteran guards and struck them with it. He then dropped it and it was never picked up as evidence. Oh yeah, and the writers for this game didn't have a damn clue what they were doing.

Shinisou well, if you wanted to murder someone in a public area, would you wave your weapon in the guys face and yell "LOOK MAN IM GONNA SHOOT YOU WITH THIS GUN"? Plus considering the fact that Sewell probably has a gun as well, he could have just shot her in the face before she could even unholster her weapon.

I know I'm a minority on this, but Downpour is the only Silent Hill game that legit got under my skin. It's actually my favorite SH game. Considering Konami went out of their way to get a poor company to work on this game so they wouldn't have to put a lot of money into the game, I think they did an alright job. Konami didn't give a shit about this game, but at least Vatra tried.
@OlDirtyBaron8 жыл бұрын
I think thematically and conceptually Downpour is the only non-Team Silent titlee that tries to put its own stamp on the series. The problem of course is that Vatra had no idea how to make a horror game, or inflict any kind of terror or dread in the player. Ultimately I dig the story of Downpour and I think it has something interesting to say about forgiveness, but all of that gets lost in the sea of mediocre design and gameplay decisions. I really think that if Vatra had another year or two to develop the game they may have figured it out. Alas.
@ShadowWolfRising6 жыл бұрын
Funky Weapon That's honestly the biggest problem of Downpour. Not enough time in the metaphorical oven. Some time to clean it up, change some things here and there, fix the bugs and glitches, could have been an pretty good game.
@TheDarthMasterChief6 жыл бұрын
honestly to me i see a major problem of it being that it just says "yeah, silent hill's a therapist town that can show you other people's memories" which makes no sense at all in terms of either the game itself or the other western games or the original games
@pxnk_n_disorderly2 жыл бұрын
I know it’s been 10 years but Jesus Christ Matt how can you be this slow on the uptake? It’s two parallel stories, Murphy’s and Cunningham’s. Murphy has his Bogeyman and Cunningham’s was you. Simple. It rlly did not require as much explanation as Pat patiently gave.
@mattatmcmaster10 жыл бұрын
Did the writers of this game seriously not realize the paradox they were creating with their endings? Even Pat mentions it. If Murphy didn't kill Napier, and didn't kill Frank, then why is he wracked with guilt? He isn't responsible for any of these horrible things that happened to him, and now he's being punished by Silent Hill for being angry and wanting revenge as a father? Really? That makes absolutely no sense.
@duckwantbreads9 жыл бұрын
It's his fault Frank died, he agreed to go down to the showers with a weapon to kill someone, if he hasn't done that then the bad guy wouldn't have been able to frame anyone for Frank's murder and so wouldn't have killed him, it's not really Murphy's fault but it's easy to see why he'd blame himself for Frank's death (especially since they seemed to sort of be friends).
@ShadowWolfRising6 жыл бұрын
It's not a paradox actually. The good ending is the canon one. This is the only game in the series to have one canon ending, and that one was it.

That entire end segment just proves that anyone who actually likes or defends this schlock does not understand what Silent Hill is supposed to be. Can you image if SH2 ended with James transforming into Pyramid Head and then you fought through a horde mode of Lying Figures
@ShadowWolfRising6 жыл бұрын
Not a good comparison. See, Silent Hill 2 had 3 people it was testing separately, each fighting their own monsters (And James fighting someone else's once possibly only because of proximity during it's attack.). The Boogeyman when Murphy faced him was reflected of being both Napier and Himself, as that was what he considered evil. After facing the boogeyman he passed Silent Hill's test, too bad for him that he was never Silent Hill's real target, Anne was. There's a moment on the boat where Murphy sees a light, implying that Silent Hill was satisfied with Murphy's results in it's test, but Anne was still there and he was pivotal in HER test, so it was forced to bring him back in despite being done with him itself. So fast forward to the end of the game Murphy becomes the Boogeyman. He's not THE Boogeyman, he's ANNE'S Boogeyman, or her mental image of what evil is AKA the man she believes crippled her father. Silent Hill turns Murphy into the Boogeyman to test her, her final test. James on the other hand spends the ENTIRE game facing the Town's tests, that's why he's able to leave after the final boss, Silent Hill was satisfied with his results. But Pyramid Head was his inner demon, and his inner demon alone. There was no other person who had anything comparable to Pyramid Head in the town. The Other 2 were dealing with FAR different problems than James was, whereas Murphy and Anne had similar issues, Murphy just happened to work through his in half the time Anne did. And again, Murphy was brought into Silent Hill SPECIFICALLY for Anne's test, in SH2 all 3 were being tested equally, none of them has any link with each other or relevance in their tests. Really them all being in town at the same time could have been coincidental. And the little girl being there is the only thing of question, as she's too young to have a Jungian Shadow to manifest in the town, so she just runs around Silent Hill doing whatever free of any monsters because her lack of Shadow makes her either immune to the town messing with her, or the town merely isn't interested because there's nothing to test. Murphy could have failed his test and still have a reprieve of the Town's judgement solely because the town needed him around for Anne, after which either Anne passes and it let's her go, but keeps Murphy for his failure, or kept both because they both failed. Or to sum it up without my rambling, James isn't anyone's Pyramid Head, Pramid Head is James' Pyramid Head. Murphy and Napier together are Murphy's Boogeyman, but Murphy himself is also Anne's Boogeyman.
