Yeah, but Adrian Shepherd from HL1:OP and the protagonist from system shock 2 lost pretty hard. The protagonist from bioshock 1 had an interesting ending two thirds of the time. Glitch from Metal Arms: GITS had an incomplete victory as well. It's a real mixed bag for wrench wielding protagonists.

He does things like plan the paths of pipes through the kingdom, maintain Peach's Castle's moat, and diagnoses problems with the sewers in universe. It just happens that those problems are colonies of giant squids, carniverous plants, walking mushrooms, and fire breathing turtles. Also we see him do tangentially related environment cleanup in sunshine.
