I've both ridden a fast bike (many years ago that one, before they started watching that road like hawks and did go fairly hard on it) and driven around it at legal speed. Coming DOWN off the mountain down through those twisty steep parts that just looks quick on tv has nothing on even at legal speed, you can try and imagine whipping though there and down that part you can't even imagine how they go so fast through there, it's a bit mind blowing actually driving that section at the speeds these guys go looks like it would be terrifying. All I know is, that particular section is a lot steeper downhill than it looks on tv and I'm blown away that these guys can rip through there at the speeds they do. Sparks you see aren't from the cars, it's these guys huge iron balls bouncing off the track.
@ArnechkАй бұрын
@@lorditsprobingtime6668 A good rule of thumb is that if it looks fast on video (which this does), its incredibly fast.
@lorditsprobingtime6668Ай бұрын
@@Arnechk Very true but, I've been around racing a lot when younger and more recently I went to watch the V8 supercars at Surfers Paradise and while they certainly were fast, I could picture myself coming close(ish) to those speeds through all the sections there but, that section coming down off Mount Panorama through those bends where if you get even lightly out of line on 1, you're pretty much screwed really sticks in my mind as pretty much terrifying. There's a distinct rhythm to it and both high G and low G spots where you have extra grip then less grip to deal with and take advantage of or lose control on. It's , , , difficult.

Despite watching this for the umpteenth time, I am still in awe. Even more incredible fact - a couple of months later, Murph was on Leighton Smith radio show here in Auckland, and was taking callers. I rang and congratulated him, and asked about the reports he had grabbed the wrong gear. He replied, into The Dipper, he went for third, grabbed first, and revved the engine to 9200 rpm on the overrun. Note, the engines are limited to 7500rpm, but, can be overreved on downshifts. I asked if they were worried about engine damage, he said, they checked the valvetrain, and all was well. It therefore makes it even more incredible that they won The Great Race the next day.

Still the best shootout lap and best lap overall in my opinion. To do that with an H pattern gearbox was epic. That car was on rails, setup perfectly by an outstanding team.

One of the absolute best things about this series is that V8 sound. Hearing them climb up the revs and then bang down the gears from high speeds is just (excuse the corniness) “eargasmic”.

That was the definition of a perfect lap. What a drive, the car looked like it was on rails.

I watch this lap every year before Bathurst. It's something truly special. Hope Murph goes well on the mountain this weekend.
