This is a cool build and everyone makes cock ups. The american specs for a 6L80 is 6.5 quarts for a pan off service and 12.2 quarts for a dry fill. That's 11 litres for a dry fill.
@theskidfactory3 ай бұрын
Yeah was just a pan off service though that’s the thing! Got it sorted in the end so that’s the main thing!

@@theskidfactory true but you are probably forgetting any that was lost from the converter and oil cooler, assuming neither was new to the car....
@raelik7773 ай бұрын
@@petelattimer6808 Yeah, I was thinking exactly this, though they probably filled the converter before putting it on, I'd hope. My guess is that the level ran too low after mostly filling up the trans cooler. So they thought it was full because it was pouring out the hole, but once they ran it for a bit, it actually ran low.

23:38 You need to flush at least (12-14) Litres of trans fluid through 6L80E + Oil Cooler, if you have installed transmission dry, as 4 Litres is bugger all oil to fill torque converter, pump, and for valve body and all solenoids to work properly.
@theskidfactory3 ай бұрын
It wasn’t a dry fill, just a pan off service, there was 6 + Litres in there and when we checked the level it was hosing out the drain bung so we assumed the level was correct!
@DownUnderAUS3 ай бұрын
@@theskidfactory 6+ Litres still isn’t enough to begin with, as the entire system; including, Oil Cooler + Torque Converter, needs at least 12-14 Litres to function properly (depending on size of oil cooler); otherwise, oil pump + valve body will be sucking in air not bled from system etc.

Online docs say the 6L80/90 take 10 US quarts which in normal units is just over 9 US litres then you have whatever the lines to and from the trans cooler contain. My brother forgot to take into account the extra when he fitted a trans cooler to his 1989 VW T3. Thankfully just before firing it up and setting off I reminded him.

Hi Woody, I've been following this build with interest as I'm building a 73 dent side 2WD F100 with a swapped LS out of a VE Commodore Ute. Engine, tranny, fuel system and shifter is in and I'm starting to plan at exhaust, drive shaft, 9" diff rebuild and electrics. The plan is to do the same as you and use the stock E38 ECU. So this has been really informative. Thanks! Tell Dave I'll be calling him for the ECU mount LOL

That ATF level bolt is for stock configurations only. Since you have a cooler, it's all different. I run a Mishimoto cooler and my engine off pan level is higher than stock. Actually, what you need to messure is "Head", while the engine is running. For me, i have a dipstick and fill through the neck. I run it up to temp (81c), go through all the gears and check the level then. I'm assuming you only have the level bolt. In that case maybe the trick is to messure/guestimate the volume of the cooler and tack a small riser on the level drain, eg: to add an extra 1-1.5L of ATF... whatever you need to keep head in the pan. Ps: the key is, it's not stock any more and "Use brain", as Al would say.
@sebastiancarrall1173 ай бұрын
If you drained the converter when you originally put it all together, they'll take a heap more atf. Those factory 6l80 converters hold like 1.9 litres themselves, let alone the cooler, and lines and crap. Onya dude, love the honesty. Keep it up
@theskidfactory3 ай бұрын
Converter was never removed, was basically a pan off service so not a complete dry fill, should’ve only taken 5-6 litres according to auto data and then when we removed the drain plug to check the level it was hosing out!! This was after the fact that we didn’t have drive and topped it up to check the level was right 😂 no idea how there was fluid running out the tube but it threw us off that’s for sure!

@theskidfactory I did a service on an AU XR6 the other week. I have done a few of them before on the BTR 4 speed boxes. 4 litres of TQ95 is usually all you need. This one caught me out after I put 5 litres in and it was still begging for more oil. Basically I had the pan off for a few hours doing other jobs etc, turns out it drained most of the convertor and valve body in that time, in the end it took 6 litres of ATF. If the VF box had been sitting for a while, plus filling the cooler system, 4 litres was never going to be enough. Also if it has a thermostat in the box, that needs to get to temp to properly bleed the trans and get the level right. Just glad to see it all worked our in the end!
@sebastiancarrall1173 ай бұрын
@theskidfactory shit hey, I'm a mechanic in an automatic specialist shop, so that's where my head went to. They can drain a lot deceptively if left with the pan off. Great result tho! Autos are a weird and whacky thing.

@@JT-4real tq95 is the most disgusting oil in the world. Did a service on a btr the other day. Tc had eaten itself and gotten real hot, burnt everything. I legitimately spewed at the smell.
@JT-4real3 ай бұрын
@sebastiancarrall117 It is the specified oil for the BTR boxes made specifically by Castrol. That oil has been used in the 4 speed boxes for 15+ years. Like most autos, they don't get serviced and cook the boxes. I have just done a BT50 today and the oil was the original from factory and had done 200,000kms and was pretty knarly.
