I really like the GT86. Great looks, great chassis, BUT it is a bit underpowered. I know it's not meant to be outright fast, but when your sports car gets overtaken by mildly warm hatches... something is not right.
So here's a review of a car with a supercharger from Abbey Motorsports...

Seriously you MUST go for it. It puts this car into what I call the giggle band. Enough power to get the "whoah easy girl" response. It's begging to be unleashed, all the time. Not so much power that you have to make any concessions. Nor does it need a nasty suspension to carve curves. Most of the time you can just be giggling at just being in this car. On the highway commute to work, downshift and overtake. Giggle giggle. Corners in the mountain's, turn in. Giggle. Power out... You guessed it giggle giggle. You can push it to the next corner without needing to get to sketchy speeds to enjoy it like many 500hp beasts. Sure there are other cars that can get you to shit yourself twice on a drive to a friends house. This car with a charger, nice brakes and exhaust had me turning off the highway a turn early. Just for 10 more streets of me grinning like a kid. GO FOR IT!

Never heard of Harrop before, but I've been eyeballing the E-force from Edelbrock for a while. I'll have to check into Harrop before I make up my mind. I've had mine since new, '14 FR-S. All it needs is some Dynamat and FI to become the perfect car.

I have one. Standard. Keeping it standard. Never had an issue with the power. The original car was never setup to be a fast car. It was setup to be a fun car. Great steering, fantastic gear change, awesome chassis that made the loose rear end easy to exploit. This is a drivers car. The new BRZ/GR86 looks to solve the power ‘problem’ the best way you can in a drivers car: more displacement. I’m thrilled Toyota/Subaru had the courage to NOT turbocharge this thing.

I bought an immaculate one with 9000 miles on the clock, it's not staying standard. Already swapped the crappy standard wheels for some advans with Pilot sport cup2's which has transformed the car. Next step is swapping all the engine/gearbox/diff mounts for TRD ones which I've already got sitting around and I managed to get a set of the Performance Pack Brembos from the US . I also need to get an oil cooler to help with temps on track. Then I'll do a few trackdays like that and see what I need to do with the suspension. Most likely I'll be going with KW V3's, alongside verus LCA's and some eccentric topmounts for the front. After that if I feel like I'm wanting more power I'll do the usual manifold (with cat), catback and tune. But really the car feels fast enough for me on the road, even though it's definitely slower than my last car. If I plan to keep it long term then I may end up supercharging it, but I'll have to see really. Part of the appeal of this car is that there is a massive aftermarket for it, although there are definitely some questionably modified ones. But really I want this to be a car that can be used on track but still behaves itself on the road.

I own a 2020 BRZ tS, in Southern California. Best car there is. Why? It balances price point, simplicity, aesthetics, nice sports interior, space, engineering, low center of gravity, Made In Japan, and it even has a trunk! Yes, it could have a few more HP, yet the way it is built, one can take curves faster and better than many cars that are two or three times as expensive. I did wear out the original Michelin Pilot Sport 4 tires in only 7,000 miles, but I drive it like it’s meant to be driven around the countryside curvy roads where I live. I literally devote time just for the pure pleasure of driving the BRZ. This car has changed my life entirely, in a really good way

Quite right on the 80s super-handling sportscar with low power. Exception may be the Porsche 944 turbo, which you should hunt down and test in detail. I have a chipped one in Montréal and at about 1,200 kg vs about 300 hp, can outrun many much newer cars, and still certainly out-handle them if local Porsche Club track results mean much. Or as you said, a newish Cayman would do the trick with more boringness. I came from a TDI and love inexpensive cars and torque too. Thanks for yet another fabulously informative review. Yes I would have that brz as well.

The 'rev hang' is/may be a ECU work around to solve a problem due to to placement of the throttle body before the supercharger body. Without that rev hang, the engine can drop out of idle and stall when depressing the clutch. I have the same thing programmed in on my supercharged MX5...it's ether that or constantly having to keep some throttle on when de-clutching/ being ready to blip the throttle to stop it stalling.

OMG A HARROP SUPERCHARHER! Harrop is the best, they’re a Australian based place and they make the ONLY roots positive displacement blower/supercharger for the e92 m3, which is the only way you can boost the e92 m3 and keep its original power curves and drivability. This is a car that similarly deserves such a special kit. Know why it looks so OEM here and in the M3? Because Harrop makes OEM supercharger setup’s for the manufacturer’s. They’re the best, no POS centrifugal super/ belt driven turbo that’s got the worst attributes of both supercharging and turbos and the best of neither. Anyway, excellent company and products and its saddening so many m3 buyers choose to save a few bucks instead of buying the FI their motor deserves And others just want to make the most power even if it’s for two seconds at 8200rpm, I just don’t get how you can love the e92 ‘s stock torque curve and then go and butcher it Oh I didn’t know you’d cover this too. Fun.

I think the GT86 is my next car build and supercharging is in the plan eventually. A MkII Supra was my last project car so I know all about the love/hate of a fun driving but underpowered car; I wanted to SC it too. The GT86 as you said was exactly what we asked for. A cheap solid platform to start from but even stock it's sufficient for its purpose. It's rare to get an FR chassis that nice looking and well balanced for so cheap. The supercharged car you were driving really should have wider tires to be more stable in the rear. 225s in a SC car is like stock with the Prius 205 width tires. The rear wants to go drifting. Harrop's own GT86 runs 255-265s as I recall for max grip at full throttle.
@BlatentlyFakeName
@BlatentlyFakeName 5 жыл бұрын
TBH they aren't REALLY underpowered. You can do 60 in around 6 seconds in the manual if you put grippy tyres on it (official times were done using the slippy primacy tyres, which is why they look slow). That's not bad for only 200hp and really surprises people.
@eltreum1
@eltreum1 5 жыл бұрын
@@BlatentlyFakeName Don't get me wrong I love the car stock and its easy to drive around the torque dip everyone hates but it has the capacity for so much more and they built it to beg for it I think on purpose lol. It met the factory goal of having enough power for a high revving fun reliable drive with room to mod. 2k in exhaust deals with the dip and adds ~20+HP/TQ tuned. Outside tune and exhaust a mild positive displacement supercharger @~7-9psi boost ~275HP really seems like a good stage 3 fit for this platform without ruining the balance of the car and staying reliably daily drivable. Turbos and bigger blowers are stage 4 because the stock engine internals are reliable to only ~11psi boost and ~375HP which is plenty in a 2700lb car. The stock compression ratio and head gasket makes it risky for turbos and centrifugal SCs to unlock their max power so they have to be limited. It's kind of a waste of money unless you upgrade internals to 2.1L too. The payoff is huge in HP if you do. I have seen these ran out to 22psi boost ~450-500HP on built motors reliably. I agree about the 0-60 numbers being BS. The testers drive them weakly I think to mimic what the very average consumer will expect instead of hard core divers. If you are trying to drive fast after you take off in 1st you should not be in the torque dip again until you are stopping lol. IMHO this car truly is the successor to the old AE86 and a great car that does not need big HP to have fun but it can go as far as you want to spend. This car teaches the driver and can grip or drift at will stock. Having said all that if I could only ever do one mod to this car that would be the tire/wheel fitment.

Love the Harrop - and the only reason I didn't go for this was price... too expensive if you're outside the UK or Aus. So I went with the Sprintex SPS version instead. If you own an 86 - then YES you absolutely should do this. Yes, Toyota should've done this from the factory. Yes it will cost a few bucks & it is worth every cent. Yes the chassis can easily handle this power. In terms of his hesitant throttle map etc... this is a tuning thing, and the Sprintex + Delicious tuning are a total win :) Mine feels like stock in terms of smoothness with easy power everywhere. I've never heard of this emissions thing he's talking about.

For me I couldn't buy it because of the price and because I don't have access to fuel higher than 95 octane gas... I think running forced induction on FA20 motor with anything less than 98 octane is a suicide... If I'm going to upgrade the engine internals I might as well go with a lower compression pistons and a decent size turbo kit.

Unless you're a real petrolhead, don't go with the RX8. I say that as a rotary fan myself. Rotaries are high maintenance and hard to work on. Bad combination for someone who just wants a track car. If you know what you're about with a rotary, I'd still go with a BRZ/86. It's just a better chassis.

@@redlion145 I disagree... The RX8 has an extremely competitive chassis considering its a miata's. @@maybelive765 I used to think the 50/50 weight distribution on the RX8 was king as well. But of course, if you're not looking at the disadvantages, it's fairly easy to talk yourself into pretty much anything :P

@Fastvoice
@Fastvoice 5 жыл бұрын
Nope. If you want the back more planted you need a softer setup at the rear and a bit more negative camber (with adjustable control arms or Powerflex bushings). The stock alignment is known to be very weird at some cars. Get a KW V3 suspension, dial it to your needs and get a proper alignment from an expert. That together with Michelin PS4 or Continental Sport Contact 6 can give you a proper everyday street handling of 300 hp compressor power (I don't speak of track use, that's another cup of tea). I've done that with my HKS-compressor-powered GT86 and can highly recommend it - no need for aftermarket roll bars front or rear.

If you watch your cornering from the outside, there is actually not much of a rolling (especially in relation to a Mazda MX5). And of course a bit more rolling and a softer suspension can give you more grip (if everything else is dialed correctly - like the alignment).

I raise an eyebrow when you mentioned the car making 270 lbs ft of torque. Considering its completely standard. Some years ago I supercharged my ep3 type R. I fitted a complete exhaust manifold and decat 2.5 inch exhaust system. I fitted a Grupp M CAI. I upgraded the fuel pump and fitted larger fuel injectors. The dyno run gave a peak of 337bhp and a maximum torque of 225 lbs ft. I'm struggling to understand how a bog standard 2 litre high revving engine (like the K20) produces so much torque? Especially without any other modifications. I'm calling BS! Great video. Suspect power figures though.
@Fastvoice
@Fastvoice 4 жыл бұрын
I have HKS V2 supercharger on my GT86 with a restriction plate in the intake to make it street legal here in Germany. On the dyno it makes about 290 PS and 250 lbs ft torque at the crank (or 340 Nm as we say here). Without the plate it's no problem to get 310 PS and 270 lbs ft - I guess this was also the case with the sharpest mapping in JayEmms test car. Up to this power there's no need to upgrade fuel pump and/or injectors. So no hoax IMHO. But maybe you speak of power at the wheels and not the crank in the case of your Civic? Now that would be a completely different calculation.

@@Fastvoice I would assume a dyno measures wheel horsepower?
@Fastvoice
@Fastvoice 4 жыл бұрын
@@jimmyfarley5581 Yes, but at least on this side of the pond we add the estimated or measured drivetrain loss (about 15 to 25% depending on FWD, RWD or 4WD) to the result to get the crank (or flywheel) power numbers. The stock GT86 has only about 155 hp wheel power, but ca. 197 hp crank power. JayEmm also spoke of crank power for the supercharger at the beginning of the video. Carmakers here publish only crank power numbers for their new products, not wheel power (I guess it’s the not much different in the U. S., right?).
@jimmyfarley5581
@jimmyfarley5581 4 жыл бұрын
@@Fastvoice I believe all car makers detail their power outputs based on crank horsepower right? The EP3 Type R produced (in Europe) 197 bhp. Am I right in thinking that BHP is a measurement of total crank power? Because WHP is less due to various factors the car company would rather state the power at the crank because it's a higher number? Its easier to sell the crank power than the wheel power?
