For those that don't know, Amy is playing the ghost of a girl that haunts Ben (the dude at the piano.) The lyrics she is singing are actually the thoughts of the man, who is grieving her death. While the lyrics themselves are fiction, Ben (who wrote them) has said that he was inspired by the death of his grandfather, whom he was very close to.
@shawnannul3 ай бұрын
It was even more haunting, because the video came out AFTER MTV News reported that Ben left. So, as a 15 year old, I thought this was his way of departing and her being hurt by it. Edit: I hadn't listened to the entire CD at this point, so forgive my ignorance as a 15 year old in the early 2000s.
@knifesmith2 ай бұрын
To reinforce the point, note that not once in the video do her feet ever touch earth. Even when she's walking, she's walking on the elevated rim of the fountain. In every other shot she's on an elevated surface (roof, car, phone box?, tree...)
@sharielane2 ай бұрын
This whole time I thought the song was about the girl being in a relationship with someone who has long since checked out from the relationship emotionally but not physically, and as such feels haunted by his continued presence of the lover he used to be.

I think i cried myself to sleep to this song for for about 18 months and it was my true companion through that very, very dark time. I am not sure where i might have ended up if i did not have this song that i could vent to quietly in the dark that so perfectly understood my loss, loneliness and emptiness.

Sadly the said user deleted the comment so I'll answer this way. Don't you ever be shamed about what you listen and don't limit yourself on just one genre. Be brave. For the longest time I always thought it was about a heavy break up... or somebody she loved passed away... Now I actually think I understand it... SHE is the one who died and she is holding on not necessarily knowing that she has passed. All the visual clues point me in that direction... Her appearance is flawless... She is dressed all in white and her clothes flow in the wind... She is always alone and when others are close they never seem to see her. Her "boyfriend" or "lover" is the guy playing the piano... black suit and tie looking devastated I could go on but maybe you can feel me on this...

So when I was a kid, I used to watch the music videos on MTV while getting ready for school. I was already a fan of Evanescence because of Bring Me to Life and Going Under. I heard the song start and RAN to my room and was GLUED to the screen!(Remember, the original CD didn't have the band on this track.) Then I walked to school. There was this Goth girl who went to my school and would hang out by the same tree with me and a few other friends. It was like the start of winter or something. We just stared at each other like, "Did you see that, too? What the hell was that?" It was just stuck in my head all day. We just kept looking at each other throughout the day, thinking that was definitely a game changer.
