My favorite underrated moment is when Ned is doing Robert's duties while he is hunting and a commoner refers to Ned as 'Your Grace,' and Pycelle angrily corrects him. One of the major throughlines of the show is the unimportance of the politics of the ruling class to the majority of people, and this one moment shows that an old farmer literally doesn't even know who the king is.
@TheRealHerbaSchmurba19 күн бұрын
Hmm I interpret this differently. Ned was “your grace” in this moment while Rob was gone. Its possible the farmer knew this and was just being respectful to the throne.
@BR-re7oz18 күн бұрын
@@TheRealHerbaSchmurba After being chastised by pycelle the peasant awkwardly calls Ned "your hand" because he doesn't know the correct formal address. The scene accomplishes multiple things, showing Pycelle's disdain for the commoners, and his disdain for Ned and not wanting him to be mistaken for the true king. Ned grimaces at Pycelle's interruption, realizing the formalities don't matter as the commoner is reporting that his village was destroyed and the women defiled. Pycelle is uninterested in the lives of commoners, overly interested in formalities of court, establishing his character, and Ned is the opposite, uninterested in the "important" politics of kings landing such as how everyone should be addressed, while being interested in the "unimportant" things like justice for people regardless of status. It also moves the plot forward by having Ned attaint Tywin's chief military vanguard, and escalating the conflict between the houses. Scenes accomplishing multiple things at once. D and D were good at running the show, they just got bored and wanted out and rushed the ending so they could move onto other projects.

One of my favourite dialogue scenes that I feel isn't talked about enough is when Sandor talks about his brother Gregor burning his face. How he, Sandor, was just a boy playing with one of his brother's toy soldiers or horses & Gregor caught him, took hold of him & pushed his face into the fireplace. Sandor then mentions that it the worst part wasn't the pain or the smell, the worst part was that it was his brother doing this to him. It's one of the few scenes where we learn something of Sandor's past & where he opens up about himself, showing a vulnerability of himself. I always love it when characters who are hardass, badass, unflinching & unblinking fighters reveal something deep about themselves, stellar writing.
@nobleactual769318 күн бұрын
Exactly! I loved the exchange. "I didn't steal it; I was just playing with it..." Sandor turned back into a little child as he was saying that. Having him fiddle with the needle the entire time he was recollecting was just a beautiful way of showing the discomfort he felt opening up.

I'm still pissed about how little Catelynn was mentioned after she died. Ned was always mentioned by the Stark children (and he had more weigh within the plot). However, they rarely mentioned Catelynn again. One would have expected for Sansa or Brann to remember her, as they seemed to be the most beloved by her.

Another Scene, which I really like but isn't talked about much (I think), since it's pretty short: I love the moment when Stannis kinda breaks down, realizing he killed his brother. His facial expression...usually, Stannis isn't really known for being emotional but in this scene, it seems like he really regrets what he's done. At least in this moment. And the music ofc... Always thought that Myrcella's death was Game of Thrones in a nutshell. At first, a very heartwarming scene that every parent can relate to on a deeply human level. Jaime got to be a dad to his daughter for all of 10 seconds... and then watched the girl that finally recognized him as his true father, die a horrible and confusing death. A very underrated scene indeed.

It’s quite a karmic (in)justice as well. The Lannisters (mainly Tywin, Cersei and Joffrey) built their own career by committing war crimes against the other families. The Starks, Martells, Targaryens, Reynes and Tarbecks all had the moment of someone witnessing their loved ones getting brutally murdered by the Lannisters and their vassals (Cases in point: Ned’s death, red wedding, Oberyn’s death). Hell, the Lannisters are so up their own asses that they made a theme song celebrating these war crimes as well. So now it’s time for the Lannisters to finally taste their own medicine.

I always liked the War Stories scene in Season 1. You get a lot of character building there. Robert, using the oppertunity to relish his time in battle, Barristan talking very matter of factly and with some dignity about it, and then you get the first glimpse of Jaime's complexity as a character when he tells Robert The Mad King's last words. Honestly, for me, Season 1 had a treasure trove of amazing underrated scenes. I don't know if it's my favourite, but I'd argue that may be the most consistent in terms of it's overall quality.

I suppose one underrated scene for me was Stannis speaking with his daughter when his trek in the North is falling apart all around him. As the audience you know what he's thinking about doing and can see the turmoil waging within himself over what to do, all of us hoping he'll see the light. Even when confronted with his daughters undying love it's his ambition and zealotry that has him make a decision which makes him irredeemable at this point. Stannis didn't die in battle, he died right here.

They say that because they KNOW what it will ultimately lead to. It reminds us of the quality it had and how unnecessarily bad it ended. It is an ambivalent or bitter sweet view and how we invested the better part of a decade on this show to end with the most disappointing conclusion. We do nit want to be reminded and that failure unfortunately seeps into HOTD. When watching that show series we have our guard up and approach it with skepticism.. I initially didn't even want to watch HOTD because of that disappointment. However I, and other fans, gave the new series a chance were satisfied to a point. As soon as the show started bringing up elements that occurred in GOT, it was not warmly welcomed and was rather cringe worth. It may even be an unfair approach to HOTD, and it increases our expectations that can only lead to disappointment. It almost seems like we are waiting for the series to turn into sh%t.

I love how many of these best underrated scenes actually went to second row characters, such as Sansa and Catelynn. While watching the show, I always felt that some characters were very flashy and received several plot presents in the shape of mystical powers or abilities (Daenerys, John, Arya...). They were never my favorite ones, as I felt them more boring and predictable. In retrospective, I'm very happy about the character I chose as my favorite ones (Sansa, Margaery, Olenna...). I feel they were less betrayed by the writers at the end. Their stories were less convoluted and restricted and, therefore, ended being way more coherent.

Speaking of battles overshadowing dialogue scenes in the same episode, Hardhome has the conference scene where Jon and Tormund have to convince the Wildling leaders to join them. There's a lot of tension at work, a lot of minor power plays, and the episode really works hard to establish that yes it was necessary for Jon to take this risk. Karsi, the woman leader, also immediately endeared herself to the audience (shame she dies in the battle) in a scene that has to make you believe she'll be a future big player before pulling the rug out with the battle. And excellent performances from everyone in the room. Hardhome is fondly remembered among a drab season 5 and I think the dialogue at Hardhome helps a lot to achieve that (though maybe not as much as the battle itself).

The story about him years ago going to see Tyrion when he was born and being disappointed as Cersei’s horrible descriptions were false about the new baby that killed their mother Lady Joanna. The acting is amazing and Tyrion (or Dinklage) is genuinely sad and yet it’s so subtle, when Oberyn tells about when Cersei pinched Tyrion so hard he thought she will almost kill him. And the end when Oberyn declares that he will be Tyrion’s champion is amazing as well and a great way to end the scene. The setting and cinematography is very nice with the cell being dimly lit and the reflection of the torch over Tyrion’s eyes becoming watery as Oberyn goes on. Incredible scene for two incredible characters!

Did they have any interactions when they were kids? She referenced her father, but what does she know or care of in terms of "men's honor?" She's seen a lot of dishonorable men, and Theon was closer to that before his Reek situation. If anyone needed to fix his identity it should have been his biological sister; and otherwise in that world Tyrion or John Snow who both have identity/belonging issues.

I wouldn't say he's "suddenly inspired" in that scene. He feels guilty (this was established when he told a disguised Ramsay how he regretted betraying Robb for a father that rejected him), and he lets something slip before he reverts back to acting like Reek. He only changes when Myranda is threatening Sansa and he perceives there's a chance to escape in the snow while Ramsay is off fighting Stannis.

A lot of other more news oriented channels already covered that drama, but when HOTD S3 comes around I'll definitely address it. I was also going into my HOTD reviews with intentionally not reading the books as to solely judge the show on its own merits, but I feel like that's flawed because book comparisons is inherently integral. So I'll do a read through of Fire and Blood before season 3 and I'll also do a read through of Dunk and Egg before A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms comes out next year.

Ramsey’s mother was not Roose’s wife

Catelyn's "motherless child" scene gets a lot of hate, but is a favorite of mine. It doesn't change who Catelyn is (someone who hates Jon Snow for being brought into her household and raised alongside her legitimate children), but it complicates that as someone faced with the prospect of a child dying after she hoped for that to happen. The story actually does have a deity who has it out for the Stark family (George R. R. Martin) and continually spites them in ways you might expect them to strain at understanding, so I liked seeing Catelyn grapple with a feeling of cosmic responsibility. For similar reasons, I liked Tyrion's more secular attempt to try to understand the senseless with his "smash the beetles" scene. That was D&D reaching back to the literature they studied at Trinity when they first met.

I really liked the scene where Jaime kills Alton in the cage after having a conversation with him, since it displays Jaime's lack of empathy towards others in the first seasons in a very shocking way which made me a lot more interested in the character

The problem with that Catelyn Talisa scene is that Catelyn's words don't match her actions. This is a scene I take in a vacuum, that only makes sense if we did not see how she glares and interacts with Jon prior.
@BanesBasement19 күн бұрын
How? If anything, it only makes sense after seeing how she glares at and talks to Jon. She literally admits she broke her promise to the gods, i.e she couldn’t love a motherless child, i.e. Jon.

You got to give some credit to the sound engineers, not like Ramin Djawadi is editing the scenes together.
