He was just horribly experimented upon, which left him incapable of dying but also gave him the ability to transform into several monsters (none a vampire, and that's never seen in AC, strongly reduced in DoC where he only turns into the galian beast, and I'm betting it'll probably be left out in the remake). The way he dresses even seems to be a cultural, familial thing, as his father dressed in a similar way (all black, no red or gold).
