A sign of good horror isn't how often it gets you spooked by jump scares, but by how often it gets you spooked by absolutely nothing. Silent Hill is the master of the latter.

The most insidious thing about the creature designs is the emphasis on legs. Most of the monsters have long, slender, feminine legs as a prominent feature. The mannequins are nothing but legs. The Hangers are lumps of flesh with legs dangling from the ceiling, trying to strangle James. The lying figures scuttle around with their long legs when knocked down. We later learn that the last thing James saw of Mary were her kicking, struggling legs. This means that every monster encounter in the game is the town's way of reminding James of his guilt, and never letting him rest.

Ikr, he sounds EXACTLY as a man would sound in a similar situation. Devoidness of emotion is a sign of depression, which I'm sure James suffers from after what happened. Most of the time he sounds weak, pathetic, broken and it is absolutely perfect for the game's story and the whole atmosphere... I also felt a ton of empathy and compassion for his character _because_ of the voice and voice acting. So idk who and why would think that there's something wrong with VA in this game

Li Tobler I played the game when it first came out and it’s a bit jarring. It does a wonderful job of conveying how damaged everyone is in Silent Hill, but most games shot for a different feel, if you get my meaning. Most were shooting for a real sounding convo, whereas this... doesn’t. Perfect example is the Angela cemetery scene. My first thought was “What is wrong with these people?” And that right there was the moment my brain was set on fire.

Nothing has ever affected me as much as this game, and I'm almost mad at it for that, because it was my first horror game experience, and set the bar impossibly high for me. My young naive thought was, "Holy shit! THIS is what I want to be playing forever! There have to be endless titles like it!" I have yet to find anything can got to me the way it did, even in the sequels. Silent Hill 3 came very close, but not the same way SH2 did. This was so fun to watch and I love hearing people talk about this game: I could talk about it for hours.

Silent Hill 1-3 were all what you can call perfect storms. I loved how what inspired the "lying figure" was just a co-worker coming in Team Silents office with his hands in his jackets pockets and listening to a walkman. That the design works so well in context of the game was pretty much pure coincidence. I imagine Team Silent was a studio in which every member was so in synch with the project, that they just unconciously did stuff that worked. That's the beauty of small teams
@Big_Money_Salvia

StubenhockerElite I feel like Silent Hill 4 gets more hate than it deserves. It's definitely the weakest of the Team Silent games, but it still has an excellent story and the atmosphere is extremely unique. It captured the whole "trapped in a dream" feeling perfectly, and I loved how all the characters seemed dazed and really out of it, like characters in a dream. Yes, the gameplay was often tedious and repetitive, yes Henry wasn't that interesting of a character, but Walter Sullivan's story was fascinating and the atmosphere was on par with the other games (minus those god damned burping nurses). I've never since played a game that was able to make it feel like I could physically feel how dense, putrid and heavy the air was as it was in that game. At times it felt like I could almost smell it, it was so thick. It really made up for having to deal with leading Eileen's slow ass around and having to play through the same levels twice with invincible Walter following you throughout the latter half. Also the soundtrack is one of Yamaoka's best.

I think the most powerful scene I've witnessed in a game that had me legitimately in shock was I think Gears of War 2 when you're trying to help one of the characters find his wife. Regarding the town being a sentient force, this is perhaps the only survival horror game of the kind in which the puzzle-like sequential unlocking of doors makes sense without it just being a video game mechanic. One could argue that the town purposefully blocks its own doors in a way which makes the character have to progress in a specific order to push the story along. It's a trial for the character. This sort of thing doesn't fly as well in Resident Evil. You have to suspend your disbelief when wreckage is blocking the streets in just the right way to turn them into a puzzle, or when every single locking mechanism is some sort of art piece which requires riddles and strange artifacts to open.

I know what you mean. Remember the part in Resident Evil 2 when you have to push two statues around in order to get the jewel inside a bigger statue, and it took place in a police station? A puzzle like that may provide a challenge for the player, but at some point, you just have to wonder, why the heck is something that looks like it belongs in an Indiana Jones movie in a survival horror game about zombies?!

I just wanted to let you know, my husband and I absolutely adore SH2 and we watch this video a lot, especially on long car drives and increasingly so during October. Your passion for the game really shines through and I think that's why we can't get enough of it! We had a six hour long drive recently and we kept going back and forth on what we wanted to listen to, and always ended up back on your channel but especially this video. We would pause it and discuss it, unpause, pause, discuss... Anyway, keep doing what you do!

I bought SH2 when it first came out (2001). I rushed through about half of the game, barely paying attention while surround by people during the day. It seemed interesting, but I sold it off shortly after. In 2008 I came across it again while in a local game store. I bought the game for a second time. I took it home and started playing it in the middle of the night, by myself with no distractions. I played every night, in the dark, alone for a few hours for about a week straight. When it was all done, I knew instantly I had just witnessed a masterpiece. Like any true work of art it is not perfect, however even the imperfections add to its beauty. I believe this game needs to be played just as you would read a classic novel. Alone, silent and fully immersed.

Fun fact: Most people probably don't remember this, but SH2 was initially NOT well recieved upon release because it was so radically different from SH1. Once again, absolutely fantastic. I hadn't realized Ito was working on Silent Hills and that makes me even more disappointed. Maybe once Death Stranding is out and Playstation is satisfied, Kojima can call up Del Toro and Ito, having already worked extensively with Norman Reedus, and they can revive it under a different name. They'd have to start from scratch most likely, but they'd already have an engine thanks to Death Stranding, and I hope we can see what these incredible creative minds would've made.

The creator of Pyramid Head once said that he didn't like that the character had been interpreted so heavily as being James Sunderland's lust or uncontrolled sex drive, but later said that he DID create and write the character when he was "having trouble getting dates" and feeling very lonely and bitter, so there was a very real chance that reading was also correct, if not intended.

Disagree on the puzzles being "obtuse." Actually, playing through the Silent Hill trilogy for the first time, I found myself impressed by the combination of think-outside-the-box resourcefulness using common everyday items (dropping a HEAVY six-pack of juice cans down the garbage chute to un-stick a stuck garbage bag you saw and noted down on your map earlier is the sort of thing you'd normally only think to do in PS3-era games or newer, games with physics engines) and deliberately esoteric riddles (with their own difficulty slider) has a way of engaging your brain in a way that Resident Evil's big, fancy key item hunts generally don't manage. In Silent Hill 3, for instance, you find a hallway swarmed with bugs and Heather remarks that insecticide would solve the problem. I had the bright idea to combine the bleach and detergeant in my inventory, noting the nearby ventilation fans with a switch out in the previous hallway that controlled them. It turned out my first thought was the solution; Heather mixes the hazardous substances to create a noxious gas that kills the bugs, and then clears the air using the ventilation fans. It makes you feel truly resourceful and gives the game a sense of organizational chaos: these aren't (always) items that exist in the environment for the PURPOSE of being used as key items, but rather are everyday items you found that you can use to overcome obstacles. While gameplay-wise it's all very structured, narratively it paints a picture of clever improvisation. Silent Hill 2's standout example is the trap door with no handle, where you're supposed to use the lighter, a wax doll, and a horseshoe to make an improvised handle to open it with. This is another one I thought of immediately upon receiving the third item in that set. I had a legitimate eureka moment and realized that, were I in such a position in reality, I could melt the wax to make a glue-like substance to stick the horseshoe in, wait for it to dry, and attempt to open the trap door.

Although I think SH3 is the better overall game all aspects considered, I do believe SH2 has one of, if not the greatest, stories in any game. When it comes to the voice acting, there's a certain aspect that I think a lot of directors and audiences take for granted: the relatability of non-professional voices. What I mean is that when you encounter regular people in real life, they will not always have great sounding voices, they will not have perfect cadence when speaking, they won't precisely convey their feelings and emotions. For example, the recast voices in the HD Collection made everyone sound like actors acting, while the voices in the original version sounded like regular average people you would come across in your everyday life (and that made them feel all the more real to me).

I don't want to suggest a conspiracy but I am wondering if they made the HD releases so buggy on purpose as to silence the people who loved the first 4 games and despised the "direction" Konami had been going for, basically to trick the new fans into thinking the old fans were "nostalgtards" and try to show how much "better-er" modern games with modern technology are. But I am not saying that this is true , just throwing it out there.

Brandon Dozier considering the BS Konami has been pulling in recent years (and in the old days if you watch Guru Larry's 3 forgotten gamer gates),that wouldn't be far off from the truth.

I don't think anyone in control of Konami has the intelligence to do something this malevolent. It was most likely a fuck-up that they actively chose to ignore like a bunch of lazy cunts.

More like Tom Hulett was an ego maniac and wanted to make the games betterer because he's just so great and those games suck now anyway. Those are his words, and he says hes the biggest fan of Silent Hill ever. Konami as a publisher is usually pretty hands off creatively with their games.

Horror without emotion is just a jump scare Horror intertwined with emotion is pure depression that you can only learn from, setting aside all your expectation and focusing on making you face difficult things in your life you’d otherwise try to avoid for the longest time.

When you mentioned about James' health, that's esp. true after he's running or fighting, and then he's starts catching his breath. It's terrifying when that animation comes at the worse of times when monsters come out of the wood works and begin ganging up on you. I keep yelling, "run man, run!!!"

The tank controls are optional. I wish someone would mention this in a video about this game. 2D controls are so much better and more akin to modern gaming.

One of the things I love most about James is how realistic of a character he is. He did a horrific thing and he did it for selfish reasons. But he also did it for good reasons and I'd say that what he did was (ultimately) best for everyone involved, at least consequentially speaking.

Alíen Isolation creates a lot of feelings like this game with the environments giving off a history and personality with beautiful and atmospheric locations with the main threat feeling like this impossible danger that you almost can’t escape and becomes more and more aggressive in its pursuit of you. Learning more about it as you travel through this giant yet claustrophobic ship in the areas you don’t want.

After randomly watching your video because it got recommended to me out of nowhere, I couldn't stop thinking of Silent Hill 2 even though I hadn't even played it yet. The way you present this game as a phenomenal art piece stayed engraved in my mind and for some reason I just couldn't stop wondering why this game meant so much for so many people. I ended up caving in, got a ps2 emulator and played it and I never looked back. While the game really shows its age through outdated graphics, gameplay and voice acting, the pure idea of Silent Hill 2 touched me like no other game did. The themes, imagery and storylines all fit perfectly with one another to create a master class of storytelling unique to this game. It's now been six months since I've played Silent Hill 2 and yet I keep thinking about the flaming staircase scene, about the videotape scene. Angela, Eddie, Laura, Maria and especially James all live in my head rent free because of the lesson you can learn from their stories of trauma and guilt. I have to thank you for this video, for convincing me to give this game a try. Now I just wish I can find people to talk about this game with.
