in all fairness the mode he starts on is technically a harder mode, you can start on “Fear and Hunger” which is the default mode which allows your character to be illuminated even without torches (you’ll still lose sanity) and some challenges are easier. Fun fact. When talking about knight only being good in combat while mercenary can open doors for free you might not know but the knights ability leg sweep automatically destroyes any door. sounds like a typical game developer workaround. like a vehicle being classed as a hat and having an npc running beneath the ground to make a train move in fallout 3. or how any prop of a certain size is considered a tree in roller coaster tycoon for memory reasons. i'm willing to bet the door in this case is a problem of the RPG maker engine and the limb system. there is no general damage type, so when hitting something with no limbs, a random arbitrary limb type is chosen by the developer or it defaults to a certain type of damage out of a lack of better options. edit: apparently all glados voice lines in the first portal is delivered by a cube placed outside of the map. if these cubes disappear somehow, her dialogue stops. have heard other game dev stories on twitter that i haven't verified as well, such as there being no horse AI in X game, so when you dismount, an invisible NPC will hijack the horse and steer it away. stuff like that

This could easily be a amazing specialty/custom one off campaign A dark fantasy survival horror with enemies and encounters that make you use your environment and the tools given to you as much as your own skill sets. Make the enemies always at least slightly harder than the party could normally handle and hand select characters for players at random. You could also easily ad a coin flip system for many of the same things making players flip real coins as they would roll dice. I could even make it intentionally easy to die but not too long to beat, meaning the group of players had a nightly run Games like this always end up being the best experiences for a party. I’d save this as a challenge for a veteran party in between larger games or sessions.

@@LeafyPeach I could go on and on about how much I love the way the game handles that. (Spoiler warning) . . . . . . The game perpetually punishes you for doing the right thing and then constantly gives you an out - it's way better for your party not to save the girl, it's good for your character to give her to Pocketcat for the Claymore, it's great for your party to give her to the Lady of the Moon for a full restoration. But you choose not to do any of those things because they're wrong. The lore talks about how the dungeons corrupt people and turn them evil and as a player you have to actually constantly make the choice to resist that. And then you get to the heart of darkness and fight the God of Fear and Hunger, she recognizes that you showed her kindness. Your character didn't show her kindness, YOU, the player, showed her kindness by toughing out all the disadvantages to saving her. It's beautiful and I love it

I haven't really had to worry about resource management at all just by opening crates and barrels. It's worth giving a look! I think this game is what you get when an old-school DM wants to run a grimdark campaign for a group of 5th Edition players. The virtue of picking your battles, using items in unexpected, creative ways, actually paying attention to the environment, and certain death lurking in the shadows. This really helped me understand why D'arce is so pathetic; it seems that the player's outlook on her personality is meant to degrade with her viability. I think if someone were to make a kid-friendly Fear & Hunger (somehow) it might be really good at teaching people to deal with failure and creativity at an early age. Fear & Hunger is an amazing definition of cosmic horror. You know nothing and you die. When you get past that, you fall deeper into the madness and then you die. But you don't just get to play the protagonist. You also get to be GOD. Your time in this game is rewarded by the game letting you hurt it the same way it hurt you. When you have all the knowledge, your enemies become the insignificant specks of dust. They wont even understand why you're angry. You didn’t when they killed you. It was beyond the realm of your knowledge. It's nature in a cosmic horror. It's only fair. Fear and Hunger is like Terraria, and Warframe, and many other games like it, but those games focus only on what it's like to be the god. Fear and Hunger makes you powerless and makes you relish and fully enjoy the grasp of your eldritch power.

The only problem i have with the game is that you cant leave the game at any reasonable amounts of times. Saves are very sparce and dangerous. And theres no ironman type save, where it saves when you leave the game. The lack of the ability to stop playing for the night withiut losing all progress, is the most ftrustrating part of all. And theres no reason, no design, no enhancement to the game by not letting you leave and return. Give me an ironman mode. Sure! Limit my saves, definitely. But let me freaking close the game and return to where I left off!!! >:C

I like the uncommon death scenes. Like having your skin eaten by the lizardman and then crawling around for a bit untill you die. Or losing both your arms to a guard and then getting hit by mad rush resulting in you not being able to move when you get thrown in the corpse pit, leaving only the choice of "quit breathing" and "hold on". Holding on does literally nothing.

Thanks for the video coverage and high words! You do raise some good questions too. The game isn't without flaws and it is up to debate whether all content was handled with good taste or not. I do have reasonings for many of the things but ultimately art is in the eye of the beholder and it's up to people to interpret these things the way they see fit. All I can say is that none of the things were made with ill intents, even if that might sound hard to believe considering all the filth this game has to offer. Again thanks for the video, made my day! :D

@@wolfmoonens3378 If you want to find out for yourself, the game awaits you. But if you want to hear it outright... Well... On the path that Super Eyepatch Wolf travelled, the player defeated Francois without Le'garde surviving, so Le'garde did not ascend to the Void. In doing so, only you ascend. And if you somehow make it past Sylvian's "Traces" (did you really think you could stand a chance against an ACTUAL Old God?), you would encounter an echo of your character, who asks you how you will rule as a New God. And thus, you become a New God. You become the same kind of chump that your party defeated in Ma'havre. The same kind of limited, mortal DEMIgod that inevitably got dethroned by new aspirants. Betel was dethroned by Nas'hrah, and in turn got dethroned (and beheaded) by Valtiel, who in turn got his brains bashed in by you. The cycle of seeking power, a pseudo-divine game of thrones, will continue, and eventually someone's gonna descend into the dungeons, make pilgrimage to the city of the gods, and tear you apart in pursuit of ascension, leaving you to languish in the Great Hall where all defeated New Gods reside, powerless as they are. Technically escaping the dungeons (Ending E) is the "worst" ending, especially if Le'garde is dead by the time you find him. But if you bring Le'garde to Ma'havre, and he survives the fight with Francois (which you can kinda cheese if you know what to say to him), HE will ascend, and you'll be able to pursue him into the Void. If you survive the Void, and make it past Sylvian's "Traces" (you don't have to fight her if you play on Normal), you find Le'garde, except this isn't quite Le'garde anymore. You can confront this xanthous monarch and put an end to their ambitions, or you can kneel before them, and accept that maybe they will escape this cycle of ascension and deicide. For while each New God embodied a certain quality, like torment, enlightenment, endlessness, domination, etc, Le'garde embodied all four of the above. And while he might not quite attain the heights of the Old Gods themselves, he might have surpassed the demigods stuck in their sad little game of thrones. And yet, this isn't the "best" ending. For that, one must go DEEPER. One must seek the growths of that which the dungeon itself was built around, then dive into the mouth of something that will swallow them whole, with no hope of escape. That is the path to Endings A and B, though one of them requires you to escort someone into the very depths of the bowels of this beast. If you reach the bottom without them, well... That's for you to find out for yourself... ...but do you really want to?

Thanks to this video I bit the bullet and bought this game (after some time away from it to forget some of your tips). I currently have Ending E under my belt (I could have gone further but I wanted closure for that run). This game was great. When I started my first run everything made me anxious, especially the Hounds, but the more familiar I got with what I could do and how confidently I could take each stride I pushed back and eventually made it to Le'Garde. I was worried that saving optimized starting loadouts would cheapen the game cuz of the map being set each time, but the deeper I got in the dungeon the more I realized learning the layout is important for beating Le'Garde's timer, and the game has enough RNG where you're still kept on your toes. The tension of your party getting crippled is the next step up from LISA's mechanics and executed in way more effective ways that can't always be optimized out of.

Nope. That is true in a way. Gut's goal isn't to destroy all evil but Revenge, He couldn't care less about a village getting burned down. He would go there to look for clues for Grifith though but He isn't essentially a kind character, that's due to his childhood from being raised with the bandits. He's a broken character. the Outlander just like Guts, has his goal as revenge to Kill the person who destroyed his village. But he has Panapobhia here (Actual lore) he has Fear of EVERYTHING. He with his Dog Moon decided at the end to kill all the monsters because the only way for his FEAR of EVERYTHING to disappear is to destroy everything that he fears. Thus he becomes the God of Ultra Violence because he will destroy everything. He ascended into a God leaving his Dog behind.

Helpful tips/trivia for those thinking about playing or for future eyepatch playthroughs. - SE-Wolf does not properly stress that there is a LOT of nudity and sexual violence in this game, so either get the 'clean' mod or use discretion if you'd rather not be exposed to such dark subject matter. - All characters can learn dash, you can obtain it in character select with the right prologue dialogue choices. Dash is probably the best skill in the game due to getting the ability to outrun monsters consistently. - Most Beds you can save at will have zero risks (No flip) if you eliminate all enemies in that area or eliminate the crow mauler in the case of the crow's bed. For example, killing all enemies and Trortur in the screen that you encounter him on ensures you can save there infinitely. - Spells are more likely to land a headshot than melee attacks. - Damage over time abilities like poison are incredibly powerful against tanky enemies like bosses. - SE-Wolf still hasn't encountered the final boss, there's multiple endings for you to discover (or die several times trying). - Le'garde is not required to be alive for you to get a lot of aformentioned endings. - Some enemy body parts, especially heads, have comically low hp, fragile enough that say... even a child with a small knife might make short work of it... - All 'Coinflip' attacks can be fully blocked when your main character guards. No flip required. Some monsters, like the 'guard' are guaranteed to use them at certain intervals. This can be exploited to cheese the ogre guards without taking hits. - Going for a headshot while an enemy has functioning limbs is risky, a lot of them like the guards can still hit you before they die. Post-death attacks are thankfully removed in the sequel. - The text crawl in the bottom corner often conveys critical information or vague hints or warnings, pay attention to it, examples include warning about the Crow Mauler entering the floor, or in battle it may hint a coinflip attack is coming. - Most information the game gives you, even random lore snippets, have in game implications. Especially when it concerns the gods of the game's universe. Paying attention to details that may sometimes seem innocuous at first can yield great rewards, or even save you from making a deadly decision. - I strongly recommend Fear and Hunger's sequel: Termina, it's a vast improvement, more consistent, less buggy.

@LL-kv1jk

@@RaikoTheSaikou It's got some references and expanded lore and callbacks but I'd say that no, you do not need any knowledge from F&H to play Termina, and inversely, Termina does not spoil any plot-critical events of the first F&H. Both games take place in wildly different time periods with a different roster of characters. I do consider Termina a vastly superior game to the first, but the first can definitely add some enjoyment value just from having more lore context. Edit: Termina currently does have... a bit less sexually disturbing content, but it still warrants a warning either way.

The knight doesn’t believe he deserted his post and is a loyal follower who is trying to rescue/help him with whatever he was there for. The mercenary was not paid after working for him and is there to steal whatever treasure the captured guy was after, because why else would anyone go to this place? The outlander wants to murder him for having burned down his home city and killed his family years ago. And the dark priest is there to steal the guy’s attempt to become a messiah and return religion to worship of the old primordial gods. The captured guy himself heard a prophecy, went ‘that must be me. I must become the new embodiment of god and unite all peoples’ and then got his entire knight order to renegade, join him in the quest and get slaughtered/horribly mutated by the dungeon before failing.

I learned a new word today 😂 great video. Happened upon this video while scrolling mindlessly, and upon finishing it, i immediately purchased the game. Ive hated myself ever since. Thanks for the introduction to something that might well lead to my spiral into clinical insanity. Oh, and that schpeal you go into at 46:30, the fact that you could pull a real-world and profound lesson like that from a story and environment that instills such a feeling of hopelessness and revulsion and fear... That's magic. Strong work.

@@jingusflorpus4274 To put this in context since holy shit this comment exploded. This game is very literally cruel. You will lose whole runs because of a coin flip. It is not for the faint of heart. But it has a habit of sinking its claws into you and it just will not let go. The game is great but it's definitely for an audience.

Pro tip to any new players: When you get the option to stock up on food/equipment or rush straight in, ALWAYS rush in, it gives you dash which doubles your movement speed.

Yeah but you also have to sacrifice two items for dash. But I agree

@@carcinogeneticist378actual advice, but only for the mercenary, you need to choose the option two times in two different questions to get it with other characters, so just pick the options that say "rush" or "scape" or something similar. Believe me, the ability its far better than any item

Actual advice, rushing means movibg faster witch in game mecánics means saving time and avoiding the hunger and mind to go down rendering the stock on potions and food pointless.

Man. This is an excellent vid but I have a decent headset and I literally needed breaks from you breathing into the mic. Yes yes I get it, huah huah fear darkness guts, but it's a bit much! To be fair, I made it about 40 minutes in (with copious breaks) before I couldn't take it anymore. Seriously, you made this game I'd never play way more intriguing. I'm running away now but I might be back to see if you've done/will do anything on the sequel. Cheers.

Two things I've also noticed about this game: 1. This is an RPGmaker game, which given the depth and intrigue that it produces using many of the kits tools is extremely impressive. 2. Not only is this a survival horror game, but also one built on cosmic horror. This is not only present from the designs or the unspeakable horrors that increasingly turn more abstract the deeper you go, the Eldridge gods you face, but also in the overall structure, that being that knowledge and a desire to know can lead to madness. Your character descends into the dungeon to find out what happened to Lagarde, already starting your quest with the pursuit of knowledge. When you find Lagarde, after both you and he have experienced the unimaginable horrors present in what you only later realise is the upper levels of the dungeon, he wants to keep going down, desiring to know what is further in. Most people would consider this madness, and it kind of is, but as a player, you also want to know and don't have a fear of death like the characters in the game. And even in a single run, your characters degrade, needing constant mental care to keep going, seeming like a representation of madness that is present when trying to find the bottom of this dungeon. And it is a madness that you as a player seem to mirror, as you gather knowledge through repeated runs just to get deeper, only to be met with challenges that require further knowledge. This makes each extra trick, each piece of understanding of the world feel forbidden and dangerous, as it is knowledge that only leads to further horrors. This is a core element of cosmic horror, that a character knowing more about the horrors only lead to madness or doom. An element that is baked into the core of Fear and Hunger, from its story to it's basic gameplay loop.

I love stories that start out as conventional horror but slowly becomes more eldritch and cosmic in nature. Bloodborne is an example I know, but I also understand there's a ton more than people would recommend

@pointblank2890 frankly I believe that's the best way to do Eldritch horror, the surface is unpleasant but still bearable. But humanities intrinsic desire to know more leads to one discovering deeper worse truths. Because it leads to two outcomes, stopping and turning back once you have seen too much but still sane and able to get away, with a nagging feeling that you only faced the surface and there more or scarred from what you did witness and terrified of what else there is. Or the second option continue on to you doom, finding more and more until in the maw of madness or changed to the point that even the audience.
