This series singlehandedly drove me to be the top of my class in my dojang & earn my black belt by 13 - I'd rush home from school and I'd have my VHS set and ready for me to hit record for when I'd have to leave for TaeKwonDo; dbz happened to come on the MINUTE I'd have to be leaving. So I'd watch everything else on toonami up until that moment, hit record, and try not to lag behind trying to catch what was gonna happen on that days episode or else I'd be late lol. And I'd go give it probably more effort than what could possibly expected from a kid training in any martial art, because in my mind I knew goku and friends were battling it out at the same time on my TV, with my favorite characters probably DYING, so if I didn't give it my absolute ALL, I couldn't possibly consider myself in their league - which, is where all us kid fans desperately wanted to be.

Even I, a non-fan of DBZ, fully acknowledge that it has had a permanent impact on global culture. Its place in the history of manga cannot be ignored. Toriyama-san took inspiration from Chinese mythology and martial art films and created something unique, whereas so many other Jump manga come across as unoriginal (some even ripped off DBZ).

I live in the other side of the world (literally and figuratively too), in Hungary we rushed home from the bus to watch DBZ, had to fight my Grandma to let me eat in front of the TV. And it was the same for everyone. It says a lot that this is a worldwide phenomenon that affected this generation in quite the same way. Not much later 'adults' realized that they shouldn't broadcast this much violence in broad daylight, and Hungary lost Dragon Ball for years as it was literally banned from TV. (Legend says a kid died when trying to fly or summon the magic cloud, and parents nationwide were outraged). I was at University when I finally had access to the whole series on torrent, and could experience the whole of DB and DBZ (and deliberately not GT)

Vegeta's story and character development was truely the best and most heart wrenching of all. Even though I favoured Goku as a child, I think I appreciate Vegeta's story more now as an adult because its so much more relatable in some sense to my own life and the struggles I've had to face growing up.

I love how the creator got it sooo right. He made Goku, so that his ultimate power came from his kind hearted/ protective nature, that struck a cord with all us youngsters. yu yu hakusho did it for me way harder. it was alot easier to relate to a teenager at the time of toonamis original run. dbz was definitely a much more impactful show overall but watching yusuke lose his shit so often and be a total goofball randomly with legitimate struggles throughout was way more relatable than goku being an unstoppable force with pure righteous virtues. i wish id seen OG dragon ball first because kid goku was much more fleshed out.

One of the best moments in the series is Android 8 and Goku's communication, Goku's rage and mentality of avenging someone who had been killed by committing murder - a time before Goku spared enemies - and #8 explains gently that Goku is just as bad as the killer if he were to reciprocate. Original Dragon Ball is underrated.

This is one of the reasons why I truly feel 90s kids had the GREATEST adolescence experience. Not only did Dragon Ball Z shape the generations of following anime... The characters were so well put together they serve as an alter ego for most people. Vegeta's character development is by far the GREATEST in television HISTORY. Nothing was given to these characters throughout their story, they had to WORK for everything. As a child during that time it taught me work ethic; showcased to the masses that if you truly want to succeed you must develop an unyielding relentless pursuit of improvement or else you'd fail. I don't want to compare it with anything but like take Hunter x Hunter, Samurai Champloo, Fullmetal Alchemist as examples. There is at least depth in the story and it feels like actually good writing. Toriyama had a valuable gem in his hands with DBZ. But the guy was not a good writer. As far as character development in ALL OF FICTION is concerned. Idk, Walter White (Breaking Bad), Carol Peletier (Walking Dead), Prince Zuko (Avatar), Meruem (Hunter x Hunter) as few examples of better character development. I'm not saying Vegeta had bad character development. I'm saying it was certainly not the best.

I occasionally come back to this video just to skip to the Vegeta bit. I don't know what it is about it but it just feels to powerful with your narration and the music. It's inspiring. And no one to me in DBZ is as inspiring as Vegeta. The only character that struggled and changed throughout the story. Thus making him the most human and relatable to watch. bocodamondo Huh, I went on the other end and stumbled into GT first making my way backwards. I remember being confused when I saw Goku being able to turn Super Saiyan as a kid while he couldn't in Z 😂. Finally I got the gist, then Z suddenly aired on Toonami for the U.K and everyone else was catching up in school. As far as atmosphere goes, GT did encapsulate everything the DB series offered. It gave me the fun adventures at the beginning and a sudden shift to the melodramatic seriousness with the appearance of Baby, finally the sense of "progression" with it's finale. Oh man, the opening of Dan Dan and each 4 endings just gave barrels of nostalgia fuel... That's another thing too, the OST for GT hits hard for nostalgia. So J-pop 90s.

I'd say they're both great in different ways. Personally, Yu Yu Hakusho is probably my favorite anime - along with Eureka Seven and Berserk (though for Berserk it's the manga) - but DBZ had so many amazing moments. Vegeta's self sacrifice is one of my favorite moments in anything.

I'm late to the party, but this is a great video! Thank you for creating it. Vegeta's arc was indeed one of the greatest not only in Dragon Ball Z, but also anime or heck TV in general. He is perhaps the deepest character in the series, with the most growth by far. It's amazing to see who he is in Super and compare it to the start of DBZ.

It changed my life, for real. I made friendships over this franchise, built a pen and paper RPG that takes place in the DBZ universe (I am a game developer now) and even started working out.

Ilan Lakan Glad to hear that you too were inspired by DBZ and anime to improve yourself. I also want to work in game development/design so I am learning all about game design, structure and all kinds of things from card games and sports to VR and game and narrative theory. Seeing the willpower and persistence of the Z fighters really just motivates you to do something with your life and time.

Gohan was also a great character. It also shows you how stopping training, even if having great potential, leaves you out of the loop. This was my favourite character. I still watch Cell's battle moment where A16 is destroyed and get emotional. That being said, I liked a lot many points you mentioned about having villains with long arcs, how the flashbacks were used even for foes to connect with them. All that was very novel for that time, esp. for cartoons. And the last 5min of your video made me almost cry. Great job man!
