Even I, a non-fan of DBZ, fully acknowledge that it has had a permanent impact on global culture. Its place in the history of manga cannot be ignored. Toriyama-san took inspiration from Chinese mythology and martial art films and created something unique, whereas so many other Jump manga come across as unoriginal (some even ripped off DBZ).

Toriyama explained how he went about writing villain transformations vs. hero transformations. He said that the villains gain power due to a selfish desire for it, whereas why the heroes power will always win is because true power comes from a NEED that has to met in response to evil. Goku didn't want to unlock super saiyan, he had to. Love Toroyama san. Rest easy.

This series singlehandedly drove me to be the top of my class in my dojang & earn my black belt by 13 - I'd rush home from school and I'd have my VHS set and ready for me to hit record for when I'd have to leave for TaeKwonDo; dbz happened to come on the MINUTE I'd have to be leaving. So I'd watch everything else on toonami up until that moment, hit record, and try not to lag behind trying to catch what was gonna happen on that days episode or else I'd be late lol. And I'd go give it probably more effort than what could possibly expected from a kid training in any martial art, because in my mind I knew goku and friends were battling it out at the same time on my TV, with my favorite characters probably DYING, so if I didn't give it my absolute ALL, I couldn't possibly consider myself in their league - which, is where all us kid fans desperately wanted to be.

One of the best moments in the series is Android 8 and Goku's communication, Goku's rage and mentality of avenging someone who had been killed by committing murder - a time before Goku spared enemies - and #8 explains gently that Goku is just as bad as the killer if he were to reciprocate. @@nivnavion I think it's just the fact Goku gained wisdom after growing up, which makes sense, and even more after training with Kami, so training by Earth's god or Earth's guardian himself, which happened in the same time in the series, which makes even more sense, actually...unfortunately DB Super seems to have totally forgotten this wisdom Goku was supposed to have after all that, which makes absolutely no sense, obviously.

I live in the other side of the world (literally and figuratively too), in Hungary we rushed home from the bus to watch DBZ, had to fight my Grandma to let me eat in front of the TV. And it was the same for everyone. It says a lot that this is a worldwide phenomenon that affected this generation in quite the same way. Not much later 'adults' realized that they shouldn't broadcast this much violence in broad daylight, and Hungary lost Dragon Ball for years as it was literally banned from TV. (Legend says a kid died when trying to fly or summon the magic cloud, and parents nationwide were outraged). I was at University when I finally had access to the whole series on torrent, and could experience the whole of DB and DBZ (and deliberately not GT)

Goku is the male power fantasy that we all men secretly have but will never admit Always training to break through your limits, protecting the weak, childish but smart, knows when to get serious, goofy but with a righteous heart Boys are born masculine by nature and when we saw a character that was everything we wanted to be, he inspired a whole generation to become like him While kenshiro is the grandfather, goku's the father of anime. It's not far-fetched to say that goku has succeeded kenshiro and he's pretty much inspired anime in general. Without dragon ball z or goku, there would be no anime. I have recently started Dragonball Super and I know what you mean. Cause now that I watch this as a 27 year old man I find my favorite character being Vegeta! As a kid I never liked Vegeta and loved Goku and Gohan.

I was never into DBZ like that until later on when Majin Buu was introduced. I couldn't wait to come home and watch the saga unfold. Sailor Moon and Tenchi was my go too and then DBZ. I loved it all! Rip Toriyama!

I finally watched DBZ when I was in High School. Even then, after being exposed to so a lot of other anime, this series just felt so special.

DBZ is what got me into working out, trail running and martial arts. Truly the biggest impact to my life was watching it as a kid and growing up with it and being 25 now can say I can always rewarch the series and constantly get hitched and marathon it again
