The best way I could describe the show is "exhausting," but not in a negative way. It pulls you in and takes you through so many emotional highs and lows that by the time you are done with it, you just feel as though you were in Kaiji's shoes the whole way, sharing in his terror and his elation. It is an absolutely masterful piece of animation and story telling.

Someone smart and kind that for some one or other reason has never been able to 'get it together', to have a place in society. There's something about the degree of glee and sadism Kaiji's adversaries feel when they are certain they will beat him that shines a light on an often ignored, but no less real, part of human nature: our dark desire to gloat when we feel we have cornered a foe and there's no foreseeable way for them to escape their fate.

The one thing i appreciate with shows like Kaiji, Jojo and One Piece is that the wacky art style doesnt take away from the experience and keeps you invested, by the end you love the weird art style as much if not more then the realistic one
@wedwhb9899

Yes! It makes them all unique and usually such wacky styles help to focus on the details in the story or the background drawing or clothes and all, it helps when you don’t try to draw what others want but your own style, cause then you can draw and base the scenes as much as you want! I mean, one of my favorite animes are mob psycho, and the style is so wacky and simplistic but it’s just grow on you and you can’t help but love it! Also! Since it’s simple the animation and fighting geography is sooooo amazing! And the characters all grow on you and all Truly, these kind of animes are always unique in more than one way and another!

I almost teared watching this, since I feel the same way as Ishida. Though I didn't get into massive debt by gambling, I got into massive school loan debt and credit card debt. My mother co-signed for student loans and I have a hard time pay it. My credit score is demolished, and my dad harps on my mom about me while I try to find my way and try to find a way for me to pay it all off and get my second chance at living debt free again. I barely have any clothes, my depression and anxiety caused me to gain a lot of weight. I've been kicked out of my house by my dad before, and I just feel like a massive burden to my family since they keep getting letters. Not to mention the IRS sent me a letter saying I owe them money for making a mistake on my tax returns. I feel like I'm in a black hole, and almost looked to gambling a lot as a way to make some money quickly, but never did because I knew it was a bad idea. So seeing that scene really struck a nerve.

I'll be honest and say that one reason I actually wanted to watch this is because of the "ugly" character designs! Like, holy shit, we need more anime characters with ACTUAL NOSES!!>:I Why does anime hate noses? You can still make cute and cool characters with actual noses!!! I'm tired of that dot for a nose. I still love anime, I just wish there were characters with different nose designs.

TL;DR: If variety is the spice of life then 99.9% of anime is the same plain bowl of noodles with 2 tiny chunks of a different kind of vegetable added. fuck noses. I'd rather anime have more varied art styles in general instead of 99.9% of all anime having the same character model and the exact same facial features (BUT MY CHAR HAS GREEN HAIR THO, MINE HAS A CUTE PIN ON HER HEAD THO). It's a huge turn-off seeing yet another school girl uniform (but this time it's unique because her hair has gradient colors and big tits and a cute purse all the time and etc. etc. etc.).

The most chilling thing about that girder scene is when you realise the double meaning of the consequences of and why Ishida gave his winnings to Kaiji. 1. He saw himself as a burden to his family. 2. He didn't want to be that same burden for Kaiji, and so held in scream as fell. The chilling part is this: because Kaiji turned around, Ishida became a burden, too add insult to injury, because Ishida held in his scream, Kaiji was hit even harder by the fact that Ishida fell due to the shock that someone he was JUST talking to vanished without a trace. Ishida's selfless action of trying to protect his family and not be a burden to Kaiji ended up doing even more damage and making him more of a burden than if he had just screamed.

I completely disagree with the art criticism. On the contrary, the art gives this anime personality that is lacking from almost all anime as they all look way too similar. @Bobby Hill I actually don't mind the artstyle, it was the perfect choice for a show like Kaiji, and I do agree that any artist should be experimenting with new things even if they might not end up good, and also, I do not think a trope being done thousands of times can make a story boring, I mean, demon Slayer is like every mediocre shounen anime mixed together but with good animation, but it's nowhere near boring.

kaiji is my favourite character now. he is so kind, sometimes you can't believe it. he keeps trusting people even after getting betrayed again and again. he doesn't think that all people are evil, he wants to give people a chance. i honestly think i wouldn't be able to rewatch the first part, because this is where he gets hurt the most and it would be too much for me. yes, he isn't perfect, he has a gambling addiction and struggles to find a purpose in life when he doesn't gamble. but i simply can't stop rooting for him. and i am so happy that he found true friends eventually 🥺🥺🥺 part 6 is so therapeutic. he is smiling so much there. i don't care about gambling at this point, i just want him to be safe.

I actually like (finding intriguing) simply because of the art style, its grotesque, but fits narratively- I thing because Kaiji is so grotesque you get why he is both an outcast and feel that his fear of irrelevance, his struggles, his obsession is real. Plus, the true underbelly of the sinful, the wayward path full of dangers and corruption is supposed to look both dark and full of dangers.

Thank you for making this video! I absolutely love Kaiji (and I do recommend reading the manga, even though there is no official release, just fan translations). I came across it quite randomly, and I have to say that it's one of my favorite series. With Kaiji, and Nobuyuki Fukumoto's other works, there's such a unique, tense atmosphere that seems impossible to be emulated anywhere else. The art style adds a lot to the tone as well, and I absolutely love it. Also, the mahjong in the manga is simplified, so it's way easier to understand than if you were watching Akagi. Anyway, please give this a try if you haven't already if anyone is reading this!

What made this show a masterpiece to me was its complete lack of predictability. I went into this show not knowing how long the manga was, so as far as I knew, Kaiji died at the end. That sounds preposterous when you say it, since I can't name another anime in which the main protagonist dies permanently, but the absolute Hell they put Kaiji through on an episode-to-episode basis makes it impossible to tell... like they might actually kill the poor bastard. Obviously, he survives long enough to finish out two seasons, but that's all we really have to go on. Almost right off the bat you can see that Kaiji loses. Badly. Frequently. That simple fact means that you go into each game with no idea about whether he's going to come out further in debt, maimed, or with a stupendous victory. That alone made the show an emotional roller-coaster for me, and by the end of the second season it was almost unbearable.

I'm just watching the second season with my friends right now. There is a 16 episode stretch about pachinko and it is the most nail-biting shit I've ever seen in an anime. This show is incredibly good, like maybe my favourite anime ever good.

The bit where SEW talks about in the brief spoiler section was just one where I had to take a moment to pause to breathe, it was so fucking heart wrenching. There were multiple parts throughout the two seasons that did that to me. Maybe I'm just a wimp but, jesus, Kaiji's the only anime where I've found myself needing to take a breather mid-episode. It's good shit. That said, I continued reading the manga and I actually found it easier to just power through everything. SEW's notes about the music and visual presentation are spot-on; in combination, they make the anime unbearably intense (in a good way). The manga doesn't have music, and you can't hear Kaiji's (or anyone else's, honestly) screams of despair. Much easier to read it. Still fucking incredible though. EDIT: I fucking wrote "so hear wrenching" before holy shit it's like I've fogotten how to type properly EDIT EDIT: "FOGOTTEN"??? FUCK.

Just finished Season 1. What a thrilling anime. Never has an anime genuinely had my palms sweating quite like this. I think after season 2 I will delve into the manga. It’s that good!

"Boy I hope you know a lot about mahjong" But 17 Steps is super simplified. The game is set up so that both players need only one tile to win and both try to avoid dealing into an opponent's hand.

Yeah, it is a pretty nice and gentle introduction to mahjong, all things considered. All you really need to read up on to understand it is how hands are built in mahjong, the meaning of the handful of terms you call out during play, and the basic strategy of paying attention to discards to figure out through process-of-elimination what tiles your opponent might have in his hand. It still took me a bit of reading (though the scanlation was kind enough to provide explanations and links) and not gonna lie its not my favorite arc anyway. My favorite arc is the one RIGHT after it, Salvation Game. FUCKING SALVATION GAME.

Kaiji is such a good anime. I'd rank it in my top 5. I haven't felt real excitement watching in anime in over 20 years, and the writing and characterization of this anime had me binge watching it.

Personally, the art style and character designs were one o my main reasons for starting the show. I had seen it and thought "wow, that looks unique and interesting". That's probably not why many people watch shows but a unique visual aesthetic makes it memorable, even if you haven't watched the show yet. Also, one thing I think is amazing about Kaiji that you missed is that the show doesn't necessarily portray gambling as a good thing. Kaiji becomes addicted and we see him get swept up in this cycle. The first and last episodes of season two really show that; how even when he seems to be doing well financially, he still continues to gamble. And that's not how he starts the show. At the beginning he's very hesitant about entering the tournament. Just a cool part about the show that I love.

No you are actually right, most of the todays anime what comes to art style and visuals are unwatchable when comparing to 80s 90s standards. The art style in Kaiji was the sole reason it got me interested. Of course there is also the fact it was Mad House who is known for high standards (And i found Toei to be the king but after the 20s lets get real One Piece/Sailor Moon remake/Dragon Ball Super all are horrible when it comes to animation quality and are the sole reasons i cant watch them.

I actually like this style, I'm honestly getting pretty bored of all the crazy beautiful character designs. I also appreciate how its not completely hideous but also not too perfectly beautiful. P.S I haven't seen this one yet and now I'm interested, thank you.

I really hope that those writing video essays that insisted "good villains require a relatable motivation" watch Kaiji. None of Kaiji's villains have those pretentious "relatable motivations" but they are memorable because the author knows what kind of story he tried to tell.

well ichijou kinda have a point, he is a person who literally waste all his life to be in a good position and kaiji is someone that could make him lost everything. also kaiji didnt make all the effort ichijou did, he kinda desserved the victory more

This is so under rated. The tension this anime achieves... Yea it can get very brutal but tbh i dont remember the last time i actually watched a show so tense. You really cant tell what is going to happen next here. I just cant express my love for this show enough, it is one of the most underrated shows ever. Go watch it if you have you gonna have 0 regrets and binge jt in no time

Just finished this show (that I saw after this video) and man It's just so great. Kaiji is a great MC, so relatable and strong even when full of fear. The visuals are amazing and the narrator is THE best narrator I've ever heard. So hype and tense
