It's completely normal to do that since it gets pretty uncomfortable for both people if you're having an extended conversation. What actually makes him sweet and compassionate is that he went over to chat with the guy in the first place. He didn't have to. And he went to talk with him in English, asking how his trip has been etc, when he didn't need to say anything.
