I didn't realize the Kamandi thing predates the Elseworlds version, this is arguably more its own thing, though possibly in "continuity" a bit as the DC Showcase featurette Kamandi Last Boy on Earth does clearly reference Superman in a series of trials our lead succeeds in (and Tuftar breaks his ankle trying to jump a chasm, which I found hilarious, as he's a cat man)

I feel that Superman: At Earth's End was the real point when the Dark Age of Comics ended. Not only is this the sort of ridiculous disaster that signifies that a trend has gone too far, but Superman's status as the first modern superhero makes this story the equivalent of your Dad trying to be cool with the kids. I also suspect that writer Tom Veitch was told on more than one occasion to write a dark and gritty Superman. He knew it was a bad idea, but the DC executives kept pestering the writers to do so. Eventually, he snapped and said "Fine! You want a dark and gritty Superman? I'll give you a dark and gritty Superman!" This was his cue to write the worst and most ridiculous story he possibly could.

So, here's some backstory for the context of the original Kamandi series and why it is so well remembered. Back in the Silver and Bronze Ages, any sort of Elseworlds stories published by DC were limited to single-issue What If? tales for Batman, Superman and Wonder Woman. In the mid-60's, though, DC began its first series that was set in a "possible future," set after "a great disaster." That series was the Atomic Knights, which ran every three issues in Strange Adventures (Linkara has talked about the Strange Adventures anthology in its own video, and the Atomic Knights in the Battle for Bludhaven videos). The series was highy experimental for its time, and unfortunately only got one cover appearance on the anthology (where it was revealed the World War III part of the Great Disaster was caused by a subterranean race of Mole Men pitting surface nations against each other). The Atomic Knight's fought mutants, caveman, the Black Baron, Organizer Kady and time travellers from Atlantis before their series ended. It was awesome. When Kamandi started in the early 70's, the original Atomic Knights series was actually reprinted, once again in Strange Adventures. Though Jack Kirby might not have planned it, Kamandi and the Atomic Knights wound up sharing the same timeline/world. Kamandi was actually one of the best series of the 70's, believe it or not. It far surpassed being just a Planet of the Apes ripoff, and only got cancelled in the DC Implosion (when DC killed off more than a quarter of their titles for financial reasons). They attempted to give an abrupt ending/epilogue by having him team-up with Batman of all characters (though that was the 2nd team-up of the two. It involved a disembodied voice granting a wish for Kamandi, and he wished to live in the days of civilization. So the voice dumped him in Gotham. He quickly changed his mind). In fact, Kamandi was so successful that it spawned it's own "imprint" line of series, which I suppose could be compared to the relationship of the Ultimate Universe to the main Marvel universe. It was the first fully fleshed Elseworld's series, running alongside the main DCU. Jack Kirby's OMAC and Brother Eye series told the tale of one of the last superheroes to appear before the Great Disaster, as well as the megacorporations that spawned it. (In fact, OMAC was Kamandi's grandfather). Hercules Unbound followed and unchained Hercules as he wandered the world during the time of Atomic Knights (which was set between OMAC and Kamandi), and showed what the gods of the DCU were doing with nobody left to worship them. There was even a story in Kamandi that involved finding Superman's costume and finding out he in some way failed to stop the Great Disaster (I suspect it was an inspiration for the dreck of Superman at Earth's End), and there was a Superman story where Supes got sent into the Kamandi timeline and met a descendant of his (it was part of battle with the Time Trapper). There was also a long series of stand-alone stories called "the Day after Doomsday" that were published in the anthologies Weird War Tales, the Unexpected and House of Mystery. They told the stories of the few survivors of the disaster, and their own grisly ends. There was even a full backstory created for how Ares and the New Gods caused the Great Disaster. It was also all tied into the Atomic Knight's series from the mid-60's, which even crossed over with Hercules Unbound to fight a villain from OMAC. Beyond that, Karate Kid from the Legion of Superheroes also wound up in the Kamandi timeline for a while. The end of Kamandi and Hercules Unbound caused the "Great Disaster" Line to wind-down, with only the occasional anthology story appearing. Kamandi did team-up with Batman as I mentioned in a truncated attempt to wrap up his series, and in the early 80's both he and OMAC teamed up with Superman. OMAC did get his own backup series in Warlord too. The big problem, though, was that the Atomic Knights' series established that the Great Disaster happened in 1986, and that was reinforced in all the other series. But when we approached that year, DC chickened out. Rather than keep their whole "alternate timeline" idea, they instead did a Superman/Atomic Knights team-up where it was revealed that THE ENTIRE TIMELINE WAS A DREAM BY A US SOLDIER IN A SENSORY DEPRIVATION EXPERIMENT. This completely threw out the crossovers that had happened before and everything that Kirby and the other writers had intended. I don't remember how any other fans reacted when that happened, but I was absolutely furious. They attempted to salvage that retcon by having that soldier (Gardner Grayle, who was the leader of the Knights) get a mech suit and become a modern-day superhero called "the Atomic Knight." He teamed-up with Superman and Wonder Woman right before the Crisis, and I think afterward joined the Outsiders and appeared in DC's Silver Age event in the early 2000's. Now, I like the idea of a modern-day Atomic Knight superhero, but they could have kept that AND the whole Kamandi-verse. Eventually DC declared that the Atomic Knights' timeline was its own earth separate from the Earth-1 Gardner Grayle's dreams, and called it Earth-AD. But that was a major blow to the whole line. The next thing we got was Kamandi at Earth's End... And now you know the rest of the story. (Edit) - Doggone it, I edited for grammar and lost Linkara's like. That's worth more than gold. :/ But I'm glad you enjoyed it regardless!
@talk2myself315 Жыл бұрын
One other cool thing about Kamandi was its connection to an earlier DC series, Tommy Tomorrow. In the late 40's, DC began publishing a series about Earth's "first spaceman," called Tommy Tomorrow. Eventually, the series evolved into following an "Starfleet" type cadet who fought intergalactic criminals in the future and eventually became a colonel in the "Planeteers." The series ran from the mid-40's to the mid-60's, and even crossed over with Supergirl towards the end. After that, he appeared in a single story in the 70's where he worked with Captain Comet and the JLA to defeat Chronos and a time-traveling super-intelligent humanoid T-Rex (it was groovy). The cool thing was what DC established later: Kamandi and Tommy Tomorrow were the same person, but from different Earths/timelines. On one earth, the superheroes were able to stop the Great Disaster. That led to the world of Tommy Tomorrow, and eventually the Legion of Superheroes. On the other earth/time, they failed, and that led to Kamandi.

Here's something I never thought of with Superman at earths end. The prolog says he forgot his name, so how does he remember so much about bruce? Does he remember lois at all or just that he loved her but no details? Also wouldn't it be more interesting if Superman kept trying to be superman despite not knowing why due to having forgotten his life pre apocalypse? Have him slowly relearn his own life as both clark and superman, the friends and foes he made along the way. That would serve as both an interesting story and would explain his fixation on bruce if most of the memories he rediscovered were of the two of them. Maybe even finding something like a collection of home movies of the two like going to each others weddings clark being there to bring bruce home from a hospital trip after he gets to old to be batman. It would give him a reason to fixate on gotham and bruce in particular and maybe set up a series of him making sure his friends all rest in peace.

Well I know that there is potential in a post apocalyptic superman. Mostly because I saw it well done in a Justice League Animated Series episode, where Superman was thrown forward in time until Earth's sun had gone Red Giant and Vandal Savage was the only human still alive. And it was interesting.

Yeah, and he still kicked ass then and stuck to his principles, proving that his powers are powerful tools for him as a hero, but they are not what make him a hero.

It's Command-D time! Why the hell does DC keep bringing it back?!

@Darth_ Madara I have to imagine a wall with connecting dots and in the center is piece of paper with "Kamandi/Monarch?" written on it while a Exec is ranting about Kamandi being the keystone to DC continuity just before yelling "REBOOT THE UNIVERSE AGAIN".

Seems fitting with the DC Showcase, Kamandi Last Boy On Earth being released a few months ago on the Justice Societ WW 2 Bluray (just came in a few days ago, got a good deal) Only about 14 minutes, but a pretty cool idea that I would love to see made into a series proper covering this Jack Kirby property

I got about 20 minutes into this and I forgot why it seemed like superman had just returned to Earth after an extended absence. So I went back to the beginning and it explains he basically has amnesia. But the rest of the comic doesn't function like that. He remembers never using guns. He remembers Bruce. He seems to remember everything about himself. The only thing he doesn't remember is what happened in earth between the 90s and the current time. So does he have amnesia or not? When he realizes the reason the world has so many weapons in it, it seems to have to that way because he wasn't there to help. He didn't help because he lost his powers but he did live throw it. He was there but he doesn't remember being there. But this never brought up. He must have been doing something when the apocalypse happened. Why d9esnt anybody mention that. its so weird

Building secret underground bases under a massive highway does not sound like the US military but it does sound like another crazy idea from Zordon. Would also explain where Zordon got the idea for Turbo. Now I need 90s guy in a tube stat.

i love how many comics you could argue happen entirely because of brain damage.
@johnballard77752 ай бұрын
being a superhero your brain definitely gets knocked around a lot, probably more than footballs. i think cte awareness should be spread to all the heroes, it could explain hyper aggression and completely random out of character decisions.

With all the radiation going on I'm shocked that Superman did not became green and becomes a superpowered doppleganger of the Hulk from the dystopian timeline Maestro
@ToHoldNothing3 жыл бұрын
How does Superman react to gamma radiation, I wonder? Yellow sun and red sun we have a general idea and with H'el on Earth, supposedly Kryptonians exposed to other types of stellar radiation can gain freaking telepathy and such. But specific radiations like that...not sure

@@jlev1028 There is a scene that might've been from the comics as well in Justice League Dark Apokolips War where Darkseid injects liquid Kryptonite into Superman's veins, effectively making him a normal person, but not killing him (because it's just enough to not kill him, somehow?). A torture that was meant to demoralize him, since that was after the Justice League tried storming Apokolips and failing miserably

i can think of one maybe, *maybe* scientifically viable reason to clone hitler, and that's to answer the question of nature vs. nurture - is that kind of evil inherent in people or is it a product of one's environment - and even then i'm intentionally stretching to find a reason. Besides, why would you start with hitler? why not start with someone who was a staunch dog person and see if their clone prefers cats??
