I would take a Superman who overcame hardship, hate, self-doubt and adversity, thus inspiring people around him to change for the better over a "Paragon of Hope" caricature of the character any day of the week... and also, when something is "gritty", it can mean "showing the courage and strength of mind to continue doing something difficult or unpleasant" too. a Superman who shows courage and strength, who continues to save the world even when hated is excellent by me.

I feel that too often the aesthetic of the Snyder films distract audiences from the meaning or heart within them. The narrator even brought up a great quote from one of Gunn’s films “If I die because I gambled on love, it’ll be a worthy death.” This quote is actually embodied by Clark at the end of Batman v. Superman. He’s a character that struggled w/ hope for the entire duration of the film but eventually hope won the day. Love won the day and it began to inspire everyone around him, even his enemies.

Except even if we do accept that this is what Snyder is going, which I am willing to accept, I nonetheless find the execution very lacking. I personally think that Snyder very much failed at getting Superman's personality correctly. It's not that Superman can't be existential, melancholic, or sad. Far from it actually, Superman has always been this thing from the very beginning but you have get the personality right and how all his personas play into his character. This is purely my opinion but I find that this is where Snyder fails at.

I'm also excited to see where Gunn takes the DCEU. A funny thing (and kind of sad) thing to think about is that there are children who grew up only knowing super man as this gloomy doomer hero and not the symbol of hope and peace that older people know. Gunn has the chance to change that.

I am so excited for this universe to finally come alive (#DCU) and be connected. It’s in the hands of someone who ( #JamesGunn ) not only loves the comics but someone who knows how to world build and great with character development. I love #ZackSnyder’s vision, but when I found out the universe was being rebooted. It finally became its own Studio 💪🏾 I knew my childhood was about to come to life. #DC has amazing characters, teams and stories. #DCU has the potential to be the greatest entertainment. #RiseDCU

I don’t completely disagree with the author here but I disagree with most of what he stated. I am a huge fan of Snyder’s cinematic style. The death of PA Kent in the Tornado scene made sense. Yes, Superman could’ve rushed in and saved him. However, PA Kent told him not to do so. If he would’ve ran in anyway and said F what you want I’m saving you anyway it would’ve been a selfish act. An act can be selfish and based on your reasoning, people will understand but a selfish act nevertheless. Pa Kent was showing Supes, unlike what Joe El told you, you can’t save everyone! Pa Kent was teaching Supes to do the right thing. As far as the washed color palette, I disagree and liked Snyders take on the suit. I’ve never cared for Supes suit prior and he was never in my top 3 fav DC hero’s. I prefer dark and gritty and serious, if you look at the films the sold the most for DC they were never the goofy light hearted DC films. People trashed Brandon Routh in Superman Returns because they said there wasn’t enough action in it and the film was trying to be too much like Christopher Reeves Superman. Then people trash MOS and said it had too much action in it. I don’t want to go on too much longer but I prefer MOS Supes by a mile

There are too many Professional Couch Critics now a days online in the comment sections. And as long as they are around.. No one will make a great Superman movie. Because they'll just rip it apart no matter what.

Comment more for the algorithm. But I have to be honest. Im a Marvel guy. Since as young as I can remember. Just never got into DC anything. I connected to Marvel. No hate. Just, a Marvel guy. But I've watched everything film wise thats been done. And I absolutely hated the DCEU. I watched each with an open mind. I dont hate for hate sake on anything. Somethings arent for you and thats okay. Sadly we have alot of entitled people who think every film has to be for them or its some agenda or make it political. Anywho, I bring all this up to say this. The only DCEU films I liked where Gunns Suicide Squad and Peacemaker. And I love Gunn as a whole. So even me, someone who doesnt necessarily like DC and had no real interest in the films/series am actually a lil' bit excited just because its Gunn and I do have faith in him to make a universe I enjoy.

I’m gonna be honest, while I agree w/ the strengths Gunn could bring to Superman I do find the points about Snyder’s Superman a tad bit tone deaf at times. For one, I don’t think the comparison between Jonathan’s send off is anyway comparable to Yondu’s outside of losing a father figure. Sure it might’ve had a different impact on an audience member but the context of those deaths and what lesson they are supposed to impart on the characters and audience members are completely different. As for the not trusting the ppl of Earth line, the criticism of that ignores the context of the entire scene and the reactions that Clark receives before and after that scene when individuals discover who he is-it’s a VERY mixed response. But even further the scene is meant to push the message of having faith/hope in place of trust. And he does, it’s why he surrenders and eventually he’s rewarded by people returning their faith in him at the end.

I would also add that the Clark Kent/Superman dynamic is influenced by Jewish American assimilation. Superman represents Judeo Christian exceptionalism ironically influenced by the concept of the German Uber mencsh. Clark Kent represents Jewish Americans diluting their ethnicity to integrate into white American culture. Great video btw.
