Released in 1980, “Superman II” is a sequel to the super popular Superman I, and it was also followed by Superman III. They really nailed the numbers on these. Superman 2 continues the Man of Steel’s adventures as he battles Kryptonian villains including General Zod amidst the growing popularity of superhero films during the late 70s and early 80s.
Superman II definitely raises some questions though. Like where did Marlon Brando go? Why didn’t Lex Luthor just shut his lights? Why are snake bites so painful? Why did Superman have to give up his powers and then get them back so easily? What was with that cellophane S?
To answer all these questions, check out the pitch meeting that led to Superman II.

The movie convention in this case is that a villain isn't killed if he isn't confirmed killed. Zod being thrown away has him dispatched, not killed. ready to return in possible sequels. Case in point, the extended footage showed the three Kryptonians having survived the fall and being arrested, confirming that Superman didn't kill Zod. But, speaking of differences, I would like to point out that this Superman actually takes the fight with Zod away from the city, something that the other one doesn't even try to do (and in fact seems to be pretty happy with throwing Zod against buildings).

I figure that since they hadn't been exposed to a yellow sun for very long their powers weren't fully developed yet. The snake probably still couldn't break her skin, and probably just felt like a bit of a pinch, which she reacted to out of surprise more than actual pain.

I wish Ryan knew about the Richard Donner cut of the movie and did the pitch with those details having the producer guy make the suggestion on the changes that the studio and second director made. Originally Superman 1 and 2 were shot together by the same director but during production on what was to be the second movie Donner quit and Richard Lester finished the film. In the original script Lois deduces Clark's identity without jumping in a river and instead to prove it shoots him in the hotel, it's so great! Then we also see that he didn't kill the villains, they were captured and given over to the police after the same final fight with the power removal machine sequence. I'm sure there were other changes like how Lois forgets Superman's identity (I think it was time travel again) but those were the main two that would have been funny to see him pitch and Producer Guy changing.

@@Novastar.SaberCombat good point, but I think you miss the nuance intended in that final scene. Clark honestly couldn't kick that guy's ass without his powers, even though he was still easily physically able to attempt defending himself given his natural size and physique that he retained. Instead, he chose not to due to an apparent lack of skill and will that Superman has famously always lacked. So clearly, as anyone would expect from him, Clark has no choice but to unleash his grudge in order to avenge his latent inferiority complex and fragile, damaged ego when he gains his godlike powers back later in such a typically petty action, as is his nature. His hands were practically tied and everyone's fate was sealed beyond anyone's control. I mean really, what choice did he have, you know? Superman was the real victim as opposed to the guy he can pop like a zit. You almost have to feel sorry for him.

2:13 Clark Kent is only clumsy because he uses that to further differentiate him from the Superman persona... The fact that he tripped and felt into the fire implies that either SUPERMAN tripped (which is like... no way), or that he wanted to trip on purpose to show/reveal all to Lois... which he could have just done directly. What a convoluted script. Then again... that's probably like the smallest of all the problems with the story. XD

this reminds me of a story Kevin Smith told once when he was working on a superman script (that never happened) he went to a producers' house and had to read his script to him while he was laying with his eyes closed on the sofa at one point he jumped and was like: "who's this Kal-el guy?" so he eventually interrupts him and insists there should be a scene where he battles a giant spider Smith explains that this doesn't really jive with the superman comic the producer answers it doesn't matter, wouldn't it be cool if superman fights a huge spider the whole thing didn't work out at the end.. but the next film that guy produced was Wild Wild West with Will Smith which, if you remember.. has a giant spider fight at the end.

As a kid with playsets like Castle Grayskull and Snake Mountain among others I never believed Superman killed Zod and the other two...I automatically believed the Fortress of Solitude had a dungeon/jail beneath it that they all slid into.

Christopher Reeve's transition from Clark to Superman, just by body language, when he does the reveal to Lois is one of the best nonverbal acting bits in movie history. (I thought it was done even better in the alternate scene in the Director's Cut of this movie. And that was just basically a rehearsal!)

The green crystal (not kryptonite by the way) was explained in the Donner version. It contains Jor-El’s essence/soul and he transfers it into Clark so he’s Kryptonian again and gets his powers back.

Was not expecting the little slideshow bit at the end. Genius.

I don't know what's funnier, that you put the Cosby picture in the slideshow or that you did so for a _noticeably_ briefer amount of time
