Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, based on the Roald Dahl book Charlie and the Chocolate Factory is a classic movie that audiences still come back to today since its release in 1971. Starring Gene Wilder as the wacky (sometimes terrifying) factory owner Willy Wonka, the movie is full of yummy-looking candy and the occasional terrifying imagery.
Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory definitely raises lots of questions. Like what’s up with Grandpa Joe suddenly getting out of bed after being stuck there for twenty years? Why is that Candy Man just throwing candy at kids? Did Wonka know that one of the kids was going to fall into the chocolate river? What was up with that boat scene? Are these kids going to be okay? Why is Grandpa Joe such a sketchy guy? What’s Charlie going to do as the owner of a candy factory?!
To answer all these questions and more, step inside the Pitch Meeting that led to The Hobbit: Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory! It’ll be super easy, barely an inconvenience.

@aceash459
@aceash459 3 жыл бұрын
@@dailyplanet354 Actually I do prefer the second movie version. That's because I really liked the book as a child and the 2005 Charlie and the Chocolate Factory movie respected the original plot. For instance in the 1971 movie adaptation Charlie seems to be fatherless, while Mr. Bucket was pretty much alive and present in the book, also Veruca got originally abducted by squirrels and Charlie didn't commit any mistake at all which is why Wonka has chosen him. The 2005 movie got these things right, but Willy Wonka's character was far more faithful to the book and more lovable in 1971.
@timp2751
@timp2751 3 жыл бұрын
Preferred the 05 film as someone who read the books as a kid first too. Still some oddities of course (wonka and the whole father thing) but much of the overall feel and aesthetic seemed closer. Roald Dahl was not a fan of the final 71 film particularly the plot changes with the fizzy drinks, slugworth, Joe etc

@@sabrinamiller3671 I heard that he actually liked the remake with Johnny Depp cause he felt like that one looked more pleasing aesthetically and was more true to his book with the characters, the fact that they kept Charlie's Dad alive, and the songs the Ompa Loompas sang in the remake were actually in the book. I personally like both of the films equally, the 1971 one for the nostaligila and Gene Wilder's performance and the 2005 remake for being more true to the source material (also while I adore Gene's performance, I also feel like Johnny did a more accurate portrayal of how a chocolateer consumed by his work and isolated from normal society for years would act)

The boat ride was legitimately terrifying for the actors and actresses. They intentionally weren't told what was going to happen so their reactions would be more authentic. The projected images scared them, and Wonka's little song was ad-libbed by Gene Wilder. At least one of the actors thought Wilder had actually lost his mind, and was terrified at what was going to happen. Some of the fear and confusion you see during that scene was real.

@@magatetus I had a random idea that I posted earlier as a response to a different comment. The idea was that all of the musical numbers were just in Charlie's head (but you could extend the idea into nearly all of it being delusional), showing us a bit of what he was thinking during certain moments while the reality of the situation was probably a lot more mundane. I don't think I've heard of this idea about Wonka as a serial killer, but I could see my idea about Charlie leading to some dark implications for him. Like maybe imagine that the factory tour was actually fairly boring and uneventful but then here's Charlie imagining the other kids suffering all these strange fates and imagining the employees musically mocking / berating the other kids for their faults as they "die". He's putting up these mental blocks where he just stops acknowledging that they even exist for the rest of the tour after each event that he imagines. And for the strange sights in the boat scene, perhaps whatever was actually happening during that part of the tour gave them a moment of silence and darkness and this more than any other moment in the tour left Charlie all alone with the most vivid and tortured thoughts hidden within him.
