In my view, this show tells us what Superman supposed to be. Not a symbol of perfection that many people mistakenly equate him by, but a symbol of hope & human decency in a sea of cynicism. Don't you agree?

Totally correct. In fact, this is his comic book contrast with Batman. Superman is the idealist, Batman is the cynic. Helping save people from everyday disasters is just as important to Superman as locking his rogues away in an asylum. This is why I felt a little bad for Henry Cavil given the way that they wrote his Superman as being too angsty. Tyler gets to play a Superman whose angst is more centered around the problems that he can't fix with super powers, and how he does whatever he can for his family and other people.

Superman wasn't portrayed as perfect in BVS. If he was he wouldn't stopped the bomb going off in the courtroom. That was the whole point of the scene. He cannot save everyone. Superman isn't a god, all Kryptonians have his powers.

I love the brothers' dynamic because it feels so real. A lot of the times siblings in shows either fall into the categories of hating each others guts or the unnatural "hey bro/hey sis" dynamic. But theirs is so real. Because ya siblings can fight and be mad at each other but it's just surface deep. The second something more important happens they are by each others side no matter what. No matter what they did or said to each other they love each other behind it all.

This comment hits close to home because it's honestly the best portrayal of a sibling dynamic in years. It shows the struggle of trying to be supportive of each other, and often failing, but the brothers keep trying. That's when you can see the love between them - when they goof up, but keep trying. About a month back, I got into a bit of an argument with my sister. It was tough, don't get me wrong - but an hour later, when she asked if I could take her and her family to the airport, I did my best to pull through for her. Because yeah, you're family at the end of it all, even if you get on each other's nerves. That's why I like Superman and Lois so much. There's a strong idealism to it, but these people are allowed to be human and screw up and be mad (especially Lois, it was great seeing her explain to Clark that she was upset and why) but then they keep moving forward.

Dude thank you for acknowledging that Snyder got blocked by WB. Everyone else were dropping comments about him not understanding Superman and it's like they totally forgot that Cavill's Superman isn't complete. Zac Snyder - Make Superman look like Batman. Todd Helbing - Can we make that red pop some more? Clark's dad dying of a heart attack teaches Clark that he's not all-powerful and he's definitely not godlike. Johnathan's death in Superman & Lois reminds me of the Chimera arc of the manga Fullmetal Alchemist. They are moments that remind the protagonist that for all their power they are not gods and that they are ultimately fallible. This is a critical life lesson for them as it is a perpetual reminder in their lives in the face of villains with God complexes lecturing them about how with enough power they could be "above such mortal concerns".

@@anthonyclarke2253 it's not really unfair because snyder seems to have completed it with ZSJL but I still dislike it because of how he started. I always compare superman films with the comics I've read, and cavill's superman is really on the low bar because it's seems to be based on injustice superman which is what I consider one of the most mediocre versions of superman. Man of Steel's fight scenes are good However, I don't think I can sympathize with someone whose father discourages him to use his powers to save lives, let his father died in a tornado when he can, who's dumb enough to ask a random priest for advice to cope with his kryptonian problems, and also, someone who has no concern for human lives. Every superman adaptation I've seen would take the fight on places where no one's living (Superman and Lois, even Red Son Superman) or if the situation's inevitable, he would do everything to prevent casualties (which what happened with superman 2 and Superman and Lois final episode).
@anthonyclarke2253
@anthonyclarke2253 3 жыл бұрын
@@absolutelyabsolute4671 This is precisely my point. Zack's version of Superman is loosely based on injustice. Batman's nightmare sequence is where he goes full injustice when he's under Darkseid's influence. Zack's intention was to have a 5 film character arc where we would see Cavill's Superman become the man of tomorrow that everyone know and loves over the course 5 stories. It got cut short, end with justice league. Also why is it dumb to seek counselling? Remember Clarke was still trying to figure out his place in the world. The comics you read already have Clarke fully secure in his identity and where he fits in society. That's why I say it's unfair. I know some folks don't like deconstruction but I think was working well, WB just got cold feet and didn't by into Zack's vision.

Zack Snyder is a cynic. Not a cynic in the sense that Superman and Batman can't exist - but that men like Clark Kent and Bruce Wayne cannot. The same cynical view last seen in David Carradine's Bill from Kill Bill. That is why his version of Batman and Superman were so off. This show doesn't have that cynicism. It lets Clark be himself and shows you he indeed is relatable. Not a big fan of the Dean Cain Superman but this quote sticks with me "Superman is what I do. Clark Kent is who I am"

The thing that the show gets right is the thing the MCU got right with Steve Rogers at the core Clark Kent is a good man while Captain America can be physically hurt in more ways than Superman, nothing hurts Steve Rogers or Clark Kent more than not being able to save the day. If Steve Rogers or Clark Kent couldn't save a little girl's cat falling off a skyscraper, they would feel that for weeks. That is what this version of Superman got right that nobody really seems to have gotten right since Christopher Reeve - well maybe Tom Welling did.

The Superman I know would run a million miles to save a kid with an incurable brain tumor, refuse to play the NFL because he had an unfair advantage over other players... Argue with his dad about adopting a stray dog .. The Flash called him 'Kara's Super Cousin' to which he replied 'Please call me Clark'....The Flash told him that the rest of the league could never beat Amazo without him and he disagreed about it.... Chris Reeves said it best when he said 'A Friend' when he was asked what Superman represents... That's the Superman we always needed...And I am more than happy that we finally got the Superman we deserved through Superman and Lois which is ten times better than the Snyder Verse nonsense

The thing that is somewhat difficult more so, for modern writers, is acknowledgment of the duel identities and how do to acknowledge/express that aspect of life. Clark Kent is unique because by default. He has three identities Clark, Kal-El and Superman, while others normally only have two professional and personal. The use of the family dynamic with teen boys, coming into their powers, especially helps to blend the aspects of his identities together. Because they’re at the point of needing their full father not just Clark.

Go be Superman." And you know what that was for? Not to punch anybody, fight anybody. No, it was so that he would go out and inspire people, be a point of comfort for the people of Smallville. THAT'S who Superman. Not an edgelord who fights alien threats, no, but a symbol of peace and hope. Of optimism, and a figure that inspires positivity.

I really like what you said sir. Superman growing up in a rural area in the 21st century or the late 20th Century and being shown as a rural dad with a city bred wife who is indeed self-sufficient. I was raised in a rural area and was not born in the same area but in a small city hospital which is now considered a bedroom community for Charlotte, NC. It is Salisbury, NC and has two colleges one of which is an HBCU and the other a PWI. Both are church schools but continue to work together, /my mom went to the HBCU and my dad graduated from an all-black high school two blocks from the same HBCU that she graduated from Both were rural kids and both were from families who were all about healthcare and education. They married each other and raised me and my brothers. We did well after college but when both parents got sick, we banded together and took care of them until they passed. Nothing wrong with being raised in a rural area but yes Rural America is dying, and rural school systems are falling behind with career choices being limited. We left/commuted and worked here in NC, up north and in my oldest brother's case in Europe. I love the way that this version of the Superman and Lois love story was redone and also the family dynamics that are being explored. Twins run in my mom's family, so I get it. And it is also refreshing to see just how a superhero married to a non-super woman works out and the results sort of remind me of my folks. My dad was a vet in WWII and my mom was a teacher. They married late, worked, took care of their folks and had us later on. I love this series.

Superman and Lois is the greatest representation of Superman put on television. The movies definitely missed the point of Superman. Nothing against Cavill of course. The Johnathan Kent death in Man of Steel was stupid but Cavill really sold it.

Thank you so much you hit the nail right on the head. I am a 68 year old woman and I was brought up with two younger brothers who were Superman mad. It’s not really been my scene - certainly since Christopher Reece in the films. I caught this series by accident and was going to turn it off when I realised what it was about but I was intrigued by the setting and this Superman felt so much more grown up. I love the way the episodes spin a weave of real-life through, among the feats Superman faces and lets face it they are feats not just a lot of heroics. It’s very cleverly written and the actors are amazing. Tyler and Bitsie are so convincing as are the boys. It’s a version of Superman that is reminiscent of the comics my brothers had but has allowed Clark to mature and take us on that journey with him. The only downside is that next season, Season 4, is to be their last. The writers didn’t want it to end and neither did the actors but it seems the powers that be didn’t want to have another Superman around (even tho it’s on the small screen) when the new Superman film is released next year. I am absolutely gutted and also angry that someone could make such decisions for me, implying that I would be confused by the two iterations being played at the same time. Well guess what, as a result I will NOT be watching the new film and I hopefully can get the 4th season of S&L on DVD to add to my collection and I can watch the whole thing again. So if there are more people like me, then the plan backfired.

I think MoS is good not great mind you but good. One thing that I & many others say is that we needed a sequel to MoS where Clark becomes superman. But we never got that instead we got BvS where he fights & dies, Justice league 17 where he has some of the classic elements & ZSJL where we go back to the evil Superman trope.

I think this gets into one of my biggest issues with BvS and the others... It just completely skips over Clark's story and him actually dealing with the ending of MoS.

@@RossTalksAbout even when Snyder says that in his JL 3 he will become the Superman we know & love it doesn't feel like that. The problem is if he wanted to show that then show that in the Justice league. He had 70 million yet he wasted that money on unnecessary things like the Knightmare sequence, he could spend that money shooting new scenes for Superman & him connecting with his loved ones & seeing how everything has fallen in despair over the battles & deaths inadvertently caused by him he begins to think that maybe he should protect more people & care for those in needs by being a beacon of hope. Snyder could do that but he didn't instead he literally wasted money on unnecessary CGI. Also in JL 2 Superman would be evil then what's the point for the 3rd movie where he would be on the verge of being evil ? If he has always been potrayed as a God on the verge of collapse then what is the point of teasing it? When we know it is more than possible. I really hope that Cavill gets to do actual Superman as he wants that for a long time. In interviews when Cavill talks about Superman he clearly wants to play it like Tyler, so does Adams like Bitsie wants to play classic Lois. I really think both are good with a good script executed well we may finally get a good movie Superman.
@RossTalksAbout
@RossTalksAbout 3 жыл бұрын
I think Snyder honestly never just understood what makes Superman interesting. I get that he wanted to go from a specific angle that tried to question traditional heroes, but Superman just doesn't work for that kind of deconstruction, unless you go full-ham on it like The Boys does. And as you say, waiting for several movies to get into it and killing off the character and having the world fall in love with him off-screen just makes for an uninteresting interpretation, to me at least. I'd love to see Cavill and Adams get another shot with a different writer or director, buy The Witcher probably put a moratorium on that.

@@RossTalksAbout I agree but except watching the Snyder cut I understand that Snyder has a grasp on how DC characters should be but for some illogical dumbfounded reason he chooses not to, he just wants to adapt, cram & push every good comic into one movie without any of the context that made the comics story good in in the first place. I think he knows how these characters should be, but he just loves Frank miller (bad idea & choice for those reading comics for the past 10 years) & Watchmen comics to the point he just wants to do that but with actual DC hero's who are not about that at all. In fact DC tried that with the New 52 it failed miserably & almost made DC lose it's shares in the comic book market.Also yeah I hope Cavill, Adams & Diane lane get to potray how these characters are suppose to be with a balance between action & drama like Superman and lois & not a borefest like Superman returns. On a side note would like to hear your thoughts on The Arrowverse. You can do videos on Arrow, Supergirl, Black lighting. Maybe you can talk about how the Arrowverse succeeded where the DCEU failed?

Superman was serious in Man of Steel but saying he acts like Batman is Ridiculous. When Superman found out Lex Luthor framed Batman *and* Him he tried to convince him. Batman was the Cynical hero while Superman was Non-Cynical. Batman realized he was wrong when he saw that Superman had a family, he was just a man with powers. I think both these Superman portrayals are great.

They bring up man of steel because it’s a cynical look in the character itself. He’s someone who grew up on Earth but doesn’t understand humanity like he just landed here. He can’t figure out a way to stop Zod without breaking his neck which is f***king wild for superman. His belief in humanities goodness is so low he doesn’t rescue his father from a tornado out of fear of humans. He doesn’t seem to get that humanity and love for humanity until his space father who has never been to earth tells him that he’s a symbol basically a god for these people. So his love for humanity doesn’t come from how he was raised, it doesn’t come from being among humans it comes from a his soace daddy spirit telling him to protect humans. Yea that’s terrible

@@abelavich7914 Lmao. Jonathan Kent literally told Clark to hide his identity and not to save him. In DC superheroes have secret identities, this isn't marvel. Superman has killed in the comics but only when he has no choice. Wonder woman in the comic breaks Maxwell Lords neck but in the movie she reasons with him instead. Anyway General Zod was destroying the whole city, Superman had to kill him, if he didn't Metropolis would of been obliterated. The justice League has a no kill rule but there are exceptions. Batman is usually the most strict and never kills but Superman and especially wonder woman have killed big threats. Superman in the comics has killed Zod, Brainiac, Darkseid and Lex Luthor.

Funnily enough Man of Steel's narrative would be a perfect fit for Supergirl. She is Kara Zor-El at heart as she was raised as a Kryptonian first and had to learn to pretend to be human to fit in on Earth. She has perfect reason to feel like an outsider while being bound to protect the world as that is what a daughter of the house of El should do.
