I still love how in the movie Superman is still the same good person as we know him, but his beliefs on how to make a better world are the wrong. Like how he was crying after he killed Stalin, he just thought it was what was necessary to save the world. He doesn’t want to take life which is why he created the mind control things.

Even if he had a different set of beliefs, the outcome would have been the same. For the only way to make the world a better place, is to remove the people who make it worse. Every ideology inevitably leads one to this conclusion, which is why extremists are the most dangerous people to ever live.

Just going to leave my response here. For full disclosure, I’m the guy that wrote that incredibly long twitter thread about every single change in this movie. So you might already know what I am going to say. I, for one, am completely baffled by this take. First. Going to out my biases out there. This is one of the first Superman stories that I have ever read. Before that I had experience with my different interpretations through his several movies or cartoons. But this comic is what basically cemented who Superman is to me which I’ll touch on later. And also. I went in very excited to see what I still consider one of the greatest comics of all time. I had confidence in the writers to translate this to its new medium. Now getting into the meat of it, I do not mind changes. They are necessary. I’m glad you pointed out some of the changes here. As long as the changes don’t change the overall story and/or themes of the original. Because at that point, why are you even adapting anything. You touch upon the changes throughout but I never feel like you took the time to really analyze what happened as a result of those changes. Removing Pyotr (Stalin’s son) is probably the most egregious in the first third of the movie because he really could have been replaced by anyone. The character himself wasn’t important but the themes he brings actually do matter. He represents Soviet dissent towards Superman. His one line about Superman representing the antithesis of what communism is, that all men are equal in all respects, is profound and nowhere in the movie is that discussed by anyone. It really could have just been said by any old civilian but it’s completely omitted. Even besides the fact that it’s his betrayal that leads to the lobotomy’s (whereas in the comic Superman just starts almost immediately... for some reason). As for Wonder Woman being gay. I don’t care about that in and of itself. I really couldn’t care less. She just recently came out as bisexual in the comics and I was one of the people that cheered. But the reasoning being the equivalent of “I want to an all girls school” is actually very insulting and every friend of mine who I have talked to who is in the LGBT+ community has shared those sentiments. That aside the rest of the movie paints Diana as manhating with no real substance. In the comics, she turns against Superman because he fails to reach out to her when she needs him, after she risked her life for him. In the film, they change it so that he does actually check up on her, she leaves him because he is a man. Which is fine if they do something with that but they don’t. She never has to confront the fact that she’s wrong. On top of the fact that she only talks to 2 men in the entire movie and bases her opinion only on those 2 men, this reeks of what some men pretend feminism is. Manhating. When Wonder Woman should represent equality and understanding. She is the same WW as from the mainstream comics because Themyscira was isolated from the Cold War and thus it makes no sense for her to be this different. On top of the fact that the story paints her as being right for some reason? Finally (and I am really skipping so much like Superman killing), the ending cements this movie as a failure to understand the very core themes of the comic. That neither pure communism or pure capitalism is good. But that, as in life sometimes, the answers aren’t found to the extremes but in the middle. Lex Luthor doesn’t ever have to confront that. The story ends with Russia collapsing and being incorporated into capitalism and Lex being there to hold its hand. It takes what was a very progressive story (the comic came out in the year 2000 so definitely very ahead of its time) and turns it into “communism bad, capitalism just needs a good leader for it to be perfect”. Superman represents the absolute best in people. The ability to go beyond yourself and that anyone can make the difference. The Soviet Union in the comic prospers and goes past it’s more barbaric ways because of Superman’s influence. Nowhere is that ever mentioned in the film. Instead he kills thousands and brags about ending a war in 3 hours. This isn’t Superman Red Son. This is Justice Lord Superman through and through and it couldn’t be more obvious than giving the lobotomy’s for absolutely no reason in the film. It misses the point on almost every front. Especially his character. They spend more time with him in the movie, only for him to end up embarrassingly awful. You’re allowed to feel however you like about the movie. I will just never see this movie as anything else but feeling like it was written by someone who failed to understand what feminism is and grew up learning about communism during the 1950’s. Anyways, incredibly long comment over. I got to go to work.

Completely valid points. I overlooked a lot of the political aspects of both and just focused on the story and how it affected me or didn’t, and to me, the movie did a better job of making me give a crap about Superman. That was my biggest takeaway. I experienced both the comic and movie back to back, and the movie had more of an impact. But I totally understand where you’re coming from, too.

I have a sneaking suspicion that the differences from the comic came from a more welcoming attitude to communism/socialism as an economic system. The comic didn't give attention to the gulags and political killings, but focused on the economic aspects: it only worked because it was Superman *making* it work through sheer force of will --- his great power and pure motives made it work. Yet, ultimately ... it still didn't work, because it necessitated him "putting the whole world in a bottle," so to speak. The movie ignored the economic aspects and seemed to limit the message to, "The only way to ensure political conformity is to kill dissenters." This effectively sidesteps the ongoing political debate over socialism, which is unfortunate.
@paradoxequinox4104

Well that was a huge thing going on in the USSR so it makes sense. Still though, its unfortunate they ignored the economic side of it.
@brianervin7643
@brianervin7643 4 жыл бұрын
@@paradoxequinox4104 Yeah, I certainly think that should be *mentioned* in any treatment of communism. But, here's why I prefer the comic book version: modern proponents of socialism/communism point to the political mass-murder as an *abuse* or an *excess* of the system, and not something intrinsic to it. "No,, no, no -- we want *democratic* socialism," they say, implying that because government control of the economy is *voted* upon, then it wouldn't entail gulags and re-education camps and political murder. Rather than get caught up in that question, the comic book sort of grants that for the sake of argument and addresses socialism as an economic system. In fact, by ignoring the gulags and violence and corruption, and putting *Superman* in charge of the system, the comic book essentially sets up the Absolute Ideal, Best-Case Scenario version of Communism, and tackles that. In other words, the comic book tackles a "steel man" version instead of anything that could be construed as a "straw man." And the comic book concludes that, even under the BEST of circumstances and the BEST leadership, Communism is still intrinsically bad, because -- no matter what -- it still entails "putting the whole world in a bottle," which is contrary to human nature.

@@brianervin7643 Except in a lot of ways, the political killings and such were still happening under Superman... he was just ignorant of it due to his friendship with Pyotr Roslov. In a lot of ways, it's pretty obvious he was doing things that were shady and condemnable by Superman given that he is a holdover from old Stalin regime and actively advocates going out to do things like Stalin did to catch Batman. Superman immediately rejects this and calls Stalin's way of dealing with dissent "the old ways," indicating that he believes that Pyotr has stopped, but he hasn't, as was indicated by his conversation with Batman later. There is also an indication that Superman is too busy doing heroics to pay attention, as when Pyotr is going to respond to him and call him out on why those days were good, Superman interrupts him by basically saying, "I don't have time for your nonsense, I have some heroics to do!" and leaves him for what appears days... maybe even weeks. Pyotr Roslov missing here creates a huge hole in the dynamic of Superman mind controlling others, it shatters his psyche on how much he can truly trust people. It also creates a reason for why Batman acts the way he does... in the movie he's just, "You're order, I'm chaos. Now let me do my Joker bit even though I'm Batman." Without him, Batman just seems like an utter psychopath with nothing legitimate to say about the story.

To answer the question: No. Or rather, it depends. The Red Son movie is okay, but it's much less sophisticated than the comic. The comic actually trusts it's readers to think and understand more complicated ideas. The "Why don't you just put the world in a bottle?" scene was totally botched in the movie because they felt the need to drag out the explanation. Similarly, the ending in the comic was much, much better. Luther deliberately setting the ship to explode, then lying about it to trick Superman, and Superman knowing this but going to save everyone anyway was genius. But in the movie, it's just poorly handled.
@Cervando

You missed the point of the comic. The film ignored the point that both Lex and Superman were both prepared to go to any lengths to establish their version of Utopia and that both Capitalism and Communism have their good and bad points. There is no good or bad guy, as both have their flaws, but ultimately Superman is forced to realize what he had done and allows Lex to win, as he accepts it is for the best. The film didn't dare show that not only could Communism work to a large extent, but that other countries would volunteer to join the Communist regime. In the comic the only country that wasn't communist was the USA and their economy was failing until Lex came to power. Sadly WB chickened out showing Communism in any positive light and instead went Communism bad, Capitalism good.

This is similar to what happened with Watchmen in that, aside from the first 30 or so minutes, in terms of a direct adaptation of the events of the story it’s spot on, but it’s lacking any of the actual thematic depth that’s the core of the entire story the original story had. I liked the movie, and I think it did a good job of telling what it was supposed to tell. However, I do have a few gripes with it. Superman killing Stalin seemed to me like they were afraid of people thinking Superman agrees with Stalin's ideals despite that not being the case. Wonder Woman changing personality didn't seem to have as great of an impact, it was more tragic for her to be in love with Superman only for his obliviousness and the Batman incident making her feel betrayed. And I don't get the logic of 'I grew up on the island full of women so I'm a lesbian'. By that logic shouldn't most of humanity be bisexual since they grew up with both men and women? The battle with the Green Lanterns also I thought missed the point since Superman dealing with them easily(the Amazons and other villains too) serves to show him as an unstoppable force that was brought down by that single sentence, but in here they almost beat him and Diana saves him and just bails.

They didn't use the ending from the original comic which is one of the coolest twist ever and it added another layer to the story. But instead the ending in this movie is bland and generic. Also turning WW into a woke man-hating lesbian was a weird choice and I don't really see the purpose of this change.

Red Son is a better story, in my opinion. I understand that, based on what you look for, the movie was a better demonstration of the Superman we know and love. But the comic just isn't about that. It's about breaking down Superman to his base characteristics, to finding what makes him the way that he is. In the end, we find that, despite all the weird stuff he does over the course of the book, he still ends up being a good person. I can't say the same for this movie. After all, he kills Stalin. If this movie is your bag, that's cool. But, I just wanted to lay out why I really like the book.

The important thing to remember about movie adaptations of books is that books are not movies and movies are not books. Things that work as text in a comic panel can be different than things that work in a scene. An example of a change that was a major improvement, that is conspicuous for being a change that did not make things worse, comes from the film adaptation of "The Watchmen". A panel with a lot of text explaining what is happening to Jon Osterman is replaced with the simple voice over of Jon Osterman saying "I experience fear, for the very last time.". This change works as the complete expository speech would be clunky and break up the flow. Douglas Adams presented "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy" as a radio serial, series of books, television miniseries, LP album, and a movie. While there are many parallels between all of the different methods of storytelling, Douglas Adams rewrote the material to make more suitable for the medium that he was using. As for what the authors would think, the first film adaptation of an Asterix book basically used the panels of the original work as the story board. The film was completely faithful to the work of the original creators. Despite this level of fidelity, Rene Goscinny and Albert Uderzo hated the the animated feature "Asterix the Gaul". Why? Nothing done in the film was anything that Uderzo and Goscinny could put in a book. The second animated feature based on the adventures of Asterix was "Asterix and Cleopatra: The Greatest Story Ever Drawn", which included the characters singing and dancing-- things that Goscinny and Uderzo could not draw in a book. I would not be surprised if the writers and artists behind the comic book are happy that the creators of the animated film changed the story in ways that could not be printed in a comic book.

There were a handful of pivotal changes that really soured my opinion of the movie, like when Wonder Woman interrupts the fight with the Green Lanterns just to do this exchange: "Don't be bad guy Superman." "No, I will be bad guy now." "Okay, bye." Instead of having the scene where Wonder Woman, after having broken the lasso realizes that Superman isn't as Good as she thought he was and leaves, then having the bit with her and Lois on the island where she reiterates why she left. The bit with the letter from Lex was another big moment I missed, and then the bit where Lex, being captured by Brainiac, because Brainiac was afraid that Lex would convince Superman to change sides, ends up hacking into Brainiac's system from the inside. Like Super Suit Lex is a cool idea if you want to completely forget the point of Lex's character is that he's smart, but not strong. He can't fight supes one on one and he knows that he shouldn't, that's why he makes the evil teams, that's why he gives funding to Superman's enemies, that's why he runs for president. Because those are things Superman can't beat simply by punching them. I mean, the evil team is but that's more using other people's strength for his gain, which is exactly what Lex should be instead of discount ironman.

It is shame though that there is no motion comic on The Dark Knight trilogy and spin offs. Some subtle things got lost or deleted from Jay Oliva cartoon. Killing Joke also would be great as Motion Comics. Funny how TDKR and Killing Joke animated movies switched moments of ambiguity from their comics originals.
