During WW II there were were following marks of Spitfire, I, II, V, VI, VII, VIII, IX, X, XI, XII, XIV, XVI, XVIII, XIX and Mk 21, the Mk III was experimental as was the Mk IV and XX there was a PR IV, so including the PR Mk IV I make that 14. and 2 more after the war, but if we include the experimental versions and Seafires I still do not get 30.

The oddest thing I have seen at an airshow was at the Spitfire memorial show at Duxford a few years ago. I heard a Merlin, turned to look at the Spitfire and it was a Messerschmidt 109. Apparently, Messerschmidt had an export order for planes after WW2 and couldn't get German engines, so they had to fit Merlins.

The P51 was a great plane once the American airframe was mated to the Rolls Royce Merlin engine. Without question the most important single airplane in World War Two was the B-17 Flying Fortress. The Germans had to fight the B-17's and they lost. The RAF was not able to make the GAF come up and fight. The Americans were able to make them fight - because the USAAF was striking targets the Germans had to defend. The RAF never did that. During the most crucial part of the fight, the US bomber force was mostly B-17's.

Mandrak789 you need to brush up on your aviation history. The 109 out gunned the Spitfire in the early days, had a fuel injected engine but only 15 minutes of combat time with no radar guidance.Of course the Spitfire could out turn the 109 and could be precision guided to the enemy without wasting fuel looking for the enemy. The Battle of Britain was just that.... A BATTLE.... not as you seem to imply a walk in the park .R.A.F. Command had developed a comprehensive command and control system ready for such an event. The Luftwaffe pilots ,who were in fact very brave and skillful were hamstrung by being led by buffoons .
@hannecatton2179
@hannecatton2179 6 жыл бұрын
Stop this nonsense ! The 109 was the equal of the Spit. but was hampered by the fact that it was NEVER meant to stick to bombers as a close escort so far from base. It had a mere 10 or 15 mins. in the combat zone over southern England. The Spitfire and Hurricanes had the backing of a fully integrated ´command and control ´system and could be vectored with a certain amount of precision onto the bomber stream and escorts.You sound like a jingoistic fool with your inane comment. The ´Battle of Britain´ was an exceedingly close run thing. Fortunately the Luftwaffe was just unable to gain air superiority . Thousands of brave men on both sides had to die young in the conflict. You do them all an injustice with flippant comments.

Hanne Carlton. The Bf 109 in the Battle of Britain had cannin but only about 6 seconds of ammunition then it was either the two small machine guns or run for home. As Adolf Galland said the Spitfire was better for the job it had than the Bf 109 for the job it had, the Battle of Britain was the biggest ever air battle, but the Luftwaffe failed in every objective. The Battle of Britain was won and it was not that close. The Luftwaffe were in a bad way.

It is strage how many ignorant comments there are by certain people trying to make out their favourite fighter was better than the Spitfire. Just one comment about the P 47, it was so powerful that they could not use full power to take off. Maybe true, but the P 47 also had a very long take off run, it was very heavy. The Spitfire Mk XIV on take off they only used + 7lbs boost, until they were off the ground and could then open up, the top speed, acceleration and climb were all well ahead of the P 47. The Spitfire also went higher and had far better maneuverability.

Dennis. There is a very good reason the Spitfire is given so much credit. It was the Spitfire that was the most important allied fighter from the start to the end of the war. It was more than capable against the Bf 109. Even when badly outnumbered the Spitfire did rather well. Maybe you should read what Luftwaffe pilots had to say, while at it look at what USAAF and every pilot who ever flew the Spitfire had to say. The allied forces certainly needed the Spitfire, the USAAF used them a lot too you know.

P51 overrated !!! = Behave yourself :D The Rolls Royce merlin was used in many British aircraft during WW2 & not just the Spitfire, So your theory of No Spit = No P51 is not strictly true. The P51 was a fantastic plane & performed better than most other planes during WW2 - ( Once it had the Packard built Merlin installed ). Nobody ever mentions the Hawker Hurricane = It's always the Spitfire ! During the Battle of Britain, The Hurricane proved to have a better gun platform, could take more battle damage, was smoother to fly & Shot down far more German planes than the Spitfire did ( So is it the Spitfire that is overrated ) ??? The sexiest sounding plane EVER!! Having said that though, how daunting it would of been hearing a fleet of them flying over head going into battle.

Zerschd hearsd an Owahbeiern sprecha, nouchern an Griffon! For me the later, the Griffon powered Spits are the most beautyful WWII era fighters. Such an elegant line, together with the elliptic wings.

Merlin sound every time for me too - the GRIFFON sounds like an industrial machine; the Merlin like music.

I think the 'Victory Roll' at the end was a nice touch especially at a German airshow. Even the Luftwafe had respect for this Iconic fighter. Brilliant British engineering.

Yes it was. Goring asked his senior officers what they wanted to defeat the RAF, and Galland replied " a squadron of Spitfires". Needless to say Goring was not amused. The exact wording is in Galland's book

The captured Spitfires were not used in action, but were used in tests to evaluate their performance against the Luftwaffe fighters. The British, Americans and Japanese did the same with captured enemy aircraft.

It's funny how these days, 60 years after the war, that each country holds a great deal of respect for the other sides planes. In all honesty you couldn't really say that one was better than the other as each had it's own characteristics. But they will all live on in history for future generations to marvel at whenever they get the chance to see any of them. And lets not forget the men on both sides that flew them, hero's in their own right.

Holy shit, that Griffon sounds amazing. Once every now and then, my local air museum will fire up one of the Merlins on their Lancaster. I love the sound and smell of it, but it can't compare with that wonderful Doppler sound of the engine and big fucking constant-speed prop chewing through ground-level air like this.
