A Keihin FCR39 Slant on stock (Aus) jetting also just works out of the box, and is one of the best carbs for said bike unless you're heavily modified in which case the FCR41MX is better equipped to feed a 470-522 build. Being 38mm and lacking an accelerator pump I can see the Lectron being a limiting factor long before a FCR39 Slant or FCR39MX (better pilot circuit) both of which are incredibly easy to set, are extremely reliable whilst being more capable of feeding said motor. Given prices and capabilities the Lectron just doesn't make sense.
@earlgray43332 жыл бұрын
When you look at the lectron carburetor you have to think about functionality the simplicity the easy adjustability and the fact that it doesn’t need any jetting for elevation or temperature change is what makes the lectron carburetor a good choice for adventure riders that do a lot of different elevation changes or someone that lives in a state with several elevations so the electron makes perfect sense when applied appropriately. Sure your other carburetors are great to but the electron stands alone in its function as simplicity.

@@earlgray4333well performance wise FCR knocks it out of the park, i 100% agree if ur an adventure rider or cross country that lectron or stock carb is 100% better but FCR definitely gives it a near/better performance than fuel injection, it 100% gives the drz the personality of an MX bike which a lot of people are looking for, i think all 3 carbs are just very subjective to what your looking for and what you do

Good review and conclusion. Letting hygroscopic ethanol gas sit in a carb is what causes most issues. CV Carburetors work great and are very simple. For the way I use the DRZ reliability and serviceability is key and why I still have the stock CV carb. I use the DRZ for point to point solo desert riding at night. The DRZ can be re-jetted (or the Main and *Idle Jet* can be removed and cleaned) in ten minutes with the carb still installed, just turn it a few degrees to get access. Best solution is to get out and ride the bike on the daily or weekly. Sitting more than two months will cause issues, first with the idle jet.
@IAmYourReflection3 жыл бұрын
So you remove the seat and just loosen and rotate the carb to get at the bottom side and access the jets? Am I forgetting or missing anything? Mine bogs out at mid to wot
@nightdipper51783 жыл бұрын
@@IAmYourReflection You don't need to remove the side plastic and seat to get access to the jets. You can loosen the clamps on the air-filter boot and the intake then turn the carb. It will turn just enough so that using a 90 degree screwdriver you can access the bowl screws and then the three jets can be removed. You can also pull the air filter and move the slide with your finger to see if it is sticky. You can check the jets and slide then pull the carb for a deep clean if necessary. When you put it back together it is a good idea to replace to bowl screws with hex head screws (available at home depot). This will make the disassembly/assembly a bit easier in the future.

@@nightdipper5178 good tips! do you need to loosen the lower subframe bolts to get the carb out? I only use non ethanol gas, and when I get home from a ride I turn gas off at the petcock and let it run til it dies. @nightdipper51783 жыл бұрын
@@IAmYourReflection Two bolts on the lower subframe and two bolts holding the exhaust to the sub frame. loosen the air filter boot and tilt the subframe up. I also pull the voltage regulator off. Unless there is a need a I leave the throttle cables and TPS attached. The only annoying step in the process is getting the air filter boot back on when the sub frame is lowered. I use a bent screw diver to help get it back around the carb. Not using ethanol is a big plus. If the issue was caused by the bike sitting I would clean or replace the jets. Good luck.

If you live where you can ride year-round then you likely don't have problems with carb low speed jet plugging which is a PIA. I have to use non-enthanol premium fuel to minimize this issue. I currently own my second fuel injected bike and they both have run nearly perfect all the time warm or cold and no fiddling even after extended storage with fuel stabilizer. Carbs are amazing for what they do but they are at best a significant compromise. A carb ALWAYS sacrifices fuel economy and emissions for performance. Carbs can never achieve the same optimal level of performance as they represent added restriction in the form of a venturi to accurately meter fuel. Then there is the aspect of driveability across temperature ranges, altitude, and cold start choke/enrichment fiddling. On the road my VStrom 1000 gets better fuel economy than my DR650 that I fitted with a modified airbox and Keihin FCR MX 39. There is simply no comparison between the weight and performance between the two and the same would apply to DRZ 400 as well. I wish Suzuki would invest money in replacing the DRZ400 and DR650 with 350-400cc and 500-650 cc bikes to better compete with KTM at a competitive price point with Japanese reliability/dealer support and re-open these bikes to a more global market. These bikes have been grand-fathered in under the old emissions regulations and sooner or later this is likely to end along with your choice to purchase one.

The difference is night and day. The carb on the S/SM is underpants. Too small and slow to respond to throttle input. EVERYONE should fit an FCR39.
@Yvolve4 жыл бұрын
No more jetting or never touching it again is not possible with a carb. BeRAD might be able to put a good base jetting in, based on your specs, gas and altitude, but if you go change altitude it will change how well it runs. This happens with any carb on any bike. It is highly advisable to check if it actually runs well if you do mods or swap carbs, by putting it on a dyno with an AF meter. The only true maintenance-free option is self-adjusting injection, which is impossible on a DRZ as far as I can find. For so long I've been looking for a Lectron for my DRZ400SM big bore stroker build, but could never find them for the DRZ for some reason. It's now a 462cc with a long ratio ACT gearbox and a Lectron would be the cherry on top.
@robinsonrom4 жыл бұрын
Lectron carbs are unconventional carbs that do not use jets, and they have a mechanism (some kind of metering rod) that can automatically adjust for things like changes in altitude. I have not used one yet though, so I don't know how well this works. I definitely find them to be a curiosity though.
@Yvolve4 жыл бұрын
@@robinsonrom Carbureted cars use metering rods or blocks as well, but it is never perfect. I read a fair bit about them being rich down low from factory, which is probably to be on the safe side. My stock 2018 DRZ400S has instant throttle response and I've never had to fiddle with the carb - just saying. I understand that you bought your DRZ400S second hand, so many of the mods were already done when you purchased the bike. Tuning the oxygen and fuel mixture is a critical balance done in the factory on a dyno. The problems with the carburator starts when people change the factory settings, e.g. 3x3 air filter mod, loud AF after market exhaust, and new carburator jetting kit. My DRZ400S has plenty of power for me with instantaneous throttle response and a pleasantly quiet exhaust. Part of the reason for long maintenance intervals on the DRZ400S is due to the tuning. Once you modify your DRZ to get more power, not only have you introduced never ending carb tuning problems, but now your maintenance intervals have been shortened considerably 🤙✌️

Do you think the drz400 or dr650 is better overall? I do want a snappy bike that just goes when you crank that throttle. Power is important to me, I want a fairly inexpensive bike with a lot of power

Thanks spite I bought a 2021drz and was shocked to find out it was carbureted and I hate hate hate did I mention hate carbs so I saved up my pennies and ordered this today literally like an hour ago thanks for being honest and giving your opinion I know everyone gets mad because u have one of those opinion things lol but we need it

You bought a DRZ and didn’t know it was carbureted? 😂
@markcrum58952 жыл бұрын
Just wondering why you hate,hate,hate carbs? Pretty much the only advantage of fuel injection is emissions regs from the gov. I believe other than that a carb is just as efficient. And much easier to work on.
@connor32882 жыл бұрын
The funny thing is the ltz and kfx 400 sport quads were fuel injected i think, same engine except maybe gearing, and trans had reverse. And they have been out of production for years! Probably has something to do with "grandfathering" emissions standards if they leave it unchanged.

How did the Lectron Carb work out for you?
@dylansmith77054 жыл бұрын
I’ve built a custom XJ650 with 4 carbs. 4 of them🤦♂️. And I’ve put on custom exhaust and pods. Tuning them has taken me hours spread over two years. I feel your pain.
@robinsonrom4 жыл бұрын
Making carburetors play nicely together is one of my least favorite things. My dad was telling me about a car my uncle was trying to build with, I believe, four 4bbl carbs, and he eventually gave up trying to get it to work. And from what I have seen and been told, my uncle was a pretty competent, and intelligent mechanic.

ALL of the 'phillips' screws on the DRZ and NOT phillips screws... they are JIS screws... get JIS screw drivers and none of your screws will 'strip' amymore. Japanese Industrial Standard? Japanese Imperial Standard? Japan Isn't Standard?
@Icutmetal2 жыл бұрын
Yep…nobody understands that, but there are no “Phillips” head screws on a Japanese machine, and having the right driver makes all the difference. Learned that quickly learning to service Japanese cnc machines.

Probably just needed a need diaphragm. You get a pin hole they won't run. I've had carbs all my life. Run them coast to coast and in the mountains. No issues. That seems like a lot of work for no real gain. And $600!!

My go-to method of "fixing" a carburetor is to soak it in a bucket of gas overnight. Solves 90% of issues. Vast majority of problems are caused by varnish buildup which gas will dissolve.
@JesusismyRedeemerandLord4 жыл бұрын
Are you being serious? Does the gas have to be ethanol free?

If gas dissolves varnish build up then how would it get varnished in the first place

Sounds to me like you bought a bike that was already jacked up. That's probably why you've been having problems with it. But also not running it for 2 months will cause problems also.

I have the same question. I'm movin out to the mountains soon.. scared I'm gonna have to settle for the wr250r Would NOT excited to take that puppy up into the highway and up the mountains. Anyways, I hope u find an answer to your question
@spicywolf67182 жыл бұрын
@@no_special_person it's doable. You need a custom flywheel, can get yours machined to use the LTZ 19 block pickup pattern and then use the LTZ injector & ECU with an external pump. You'll need to have your exhaust & wiring harness modified and then rack up some dyno time The LTZ ECU's curves should be an alright starting ground since its a sister engine to the DR-Z. Bear in mind that by the time you've paid for said custom flywheel & bought the injector you would have paid more than an OEM FCR39 Slant or FCR41MX I'm buying a FCR41MX and having an O2 bung welded into my Yoshi's midpipe so that I can reduce the amount of dyno time requires since I'll be able to attach my datalogger to the bike.

Best part of the DRZ400 videos is everyone talking shit on the bike ..... And then after riding it for 10 mins, remembering how wonderful she is and spending the next 10 mins clapping and hooting as the joy pours from their pores..... Hey try remembering next time before running your mouth. That way we don't have to hear you proclaim I forgot how much fun this bike is or wow I really miss riding this scoot.
