The thing with this argument is that it can go both ways. But in a way, wasnt dean sort of sams mom? He was the person who raised sam. He provided him food and sacrificed over and over again so that sam could have as much of a childhood as possible. Obviously he was only a few years older than sam, so he wasn't a good parent, but he was definitely more of a parent to sam than anyone else in his life. Unless you count bobby, which I think is fair

@@rinthh5477 yes. but if you remember their childhood flashbacks, Dean was still a kid himself. he was always helping sam but at the same time he hurt him a lot emotionally (bcz dean himself was a kid and he had a lot of things on his shoulders as a kid....so it is not his fault but it is a fact) .... but in flashbacks of dean's childhood, they were a happy family. having a mother is different from having a big bro who cares about you more even more than a mom... i mean... my parents were always busy in medicalcenter and weren't home and i literally raised mylittle brother (i'm 11 years older) ... i raised him with all i could but still i myself was a child and never filled the space of parrents for him. when i was a kid my mom wasn't working and she was always with me. dancing, drawing, playing, watching cartoons, baking cakes... but when my brother was kid i should take care of him and study at the same time so he i couldn't do any of these with him. he never experienced things i did...the same goes for sam and dean.

Dean realized that all the good that he had done in his life, all the people that they saved and all the supernatural they ever dealt with never happened. So all the people they saved were now dead. Dean realized that he would be choosing his life over everyone one else, that is when he realized that the jinn didn’t grant you a wish they just made you think they had.

It still made sense with the "wish granting" theory. If the Winchesters never become hunters, the people they helped never get saved. Up until entering the djinn's hide out & seeing the bodies Dean still believed he had been granted a wish

@@audreyii6750 the difference was his subconscious was trying to tell him what was really happening, with the flashes of the girl and the news talking about the plane crash and researching other cases. His subconscious was letting him know that this wasn’t a true wish fulfillment. There were too many inconsistencies in what that “wish” really was, if it was his true wish why was John dead and why was his relationship with Sam strained. Dean’s innate hunter instincts were laying the foundation from the very start that there was something wrong. If the wish was that his mother never died and they lived happily ever after this was not a wish fulfilled. The “wish” always played out more as a dream than a wish.

The difference is that Dean never had a childhood. He had to grow up taking care of his younger brother, protecting his innocence as far as he could. With the pain of losing his mother, his house, his entire life, seeing how his father became more and more obsessed with hunting and the yellow-eyed demon; then the pain of letting Sam go to live a normal life studying at university, the weight of "never falling" of swallow him emotions, fear, sadness, loneliness, fatigue. Sam was lucky to have Dean to take care of him, he was lucky to have no memories of his mother, Yes, the pain of not having a mother is still there, but it's different, he was lucky to go to college and pretend nothing would have happened, leaving his family aside. Yes, he lost his girlfriend, but he allowed himself to cry, get angry, and breathe for a while. Dean, ever since he lost his mother, he never allowed himself to think about himself and his personal wishes. THAT'S THE DIFFERENCE and that's why I love Dean. He has many defects and there are times when I want to hit him for the decisions he makes, but he also feels guilt if he goes wrong and the guilt he has does not go away, it accumulates inside him.

EXACTLY! It's not a competition, but why do ppl fault the fans that relate to/feel for Dean more? Sam _had_ a childhood. A *messed up* childhood, but a childhood none the less. Dean hasn't been a child since he was 4yo. He fed Sam, he read him bed time stories. He took him to the doctor. If they ran out of money be _made sure_ Sam still ate. He protected Sam from the harsh realities of their life for as long as he could. He was Sam's mom, his dad, his big brother, his caretaker, his protector. THAT _IS_ THE DIFFERENCE! And on top of _all that_ is the fact that Dean _also_ wishes for a normal life, but doesn't allow himself to wish out loud, while Sam _does_ (going so far as to leave the hunter life & go to college)

@@audreyii6750 Of course. We Dean fans do not discredit or belittle Sam's pain or his problems. We only understand and empathize more with the pain and sacrifice that Dean makes, as an older brother. For example, we understand that Sam is afraid of his demonic powers and we understand that his way of seeing life is not the same as Dean. However, being the older brother and carrying the burden of caring for and protecting Sam because he loves him, even knowing that he has an obligation to kill him if he becomes dangerous. Imagine how heavy that burden is, but there he is, smiling and showing his best face so that his brother does not realize that he is worried, that he suffers, that he is afraid.

@ your debate at around 25:50 ish... it all comes back to Dean's monologue at John's headstone..."why do WE have to be the ones to save all these people". I think Dean knows that monsters will keep coming even if he stays, but he wishes other people would take on the job. Ultimately, he left in order to be with his brother, because it felt like the right thing to do, _and_ so that he could continue to protect the world. It's the whole "if I don't do it, who else will?" debate.

Dean has SUCH freaken _Martyr Syndrome_ Sam does too from like s8 onwards (and at the end of s5) but Dean has it throughout the whole series. Dean WANTS a normal life, but he doesn't dare ask for it/pursue it. He thinks all he deserves/is good for is fighting for the world/saving people from monsters until something gets a lucky shot & ends him But he _does_ want more & that's the _real_ tragedy /=

I think that's the reason why, even tho I love Dean and he's probably more fun to watch and has better story arcs, I've always loved Sam's personality and identified with him more. Let''s be honest here. That was Dean's wish : To have his mom alive (Look at him, being like a 5 year old kid again), his brother happy and a personnal nurse, if you see what i mean. But no. He could have had a happy life but no. He couldn't stand losing people. Suffer over joy. Sadness over love. Death over life. That, was his truly life and he chose to be in the dark than the light. Really sad episode and i really enjoyed to see Mary again.

Sometimes Dean's journey feels more heart breaking because it seems to attack his core self/identity. Both Sam and Dean are relentlessly attacked by external forces, physically and emotionally. The events that effect Sam though are largely out of his control (e.g. ****) or something he takes on for noble purposes (e.g.*****l. While Dean also has external drivers affecting him, there is often an undercurrent or even direct statement that he is somehow inadequate (e.g. he should ***** or he is a failure). There are more examples but avoiding spoilers. It just seems that generally the message is that this nightmare is happening to him not just because of this evil outside force, but is because in some way he is lacking or weak. He always rises above it eventually (like the heroes they both are), but that relentless attack on his self worth is hard to watch sometimes and makes the brothers bond even more important as a source of unconditional love.
