Atheist: I was once a Christian. Christian: where you really a Christian? Atheist: you don't know me, you don't know how I think. Christian: I was once skeptical. Atheist: I doubt that. Haha okay one standard I see. But I'm drunk so it's double.

@@B3tabyt3 I'm an atheist. I don't doubt religious believers when they say they were once skeptics, but I'd doubt anyone who claimed they were skeptical for sound epistemic reasons (which most don't claim). Most people who aren't raised to believe are just "skeptical" because they haven't experienced anything they'd categorize as supernatural/religious, and then they have some profound personal experience they can't explain naturally and that convinces them to believe. That's an extremely shallow form of skepticism, and is nothing like the disciplined, rigorous, learned skepticism of atheists who've thought about these epistemic issues philosophically. I don't think there's an analog to religious belief. Everyone who is religious is so because they believe there's a God/supernatural element behind life and/or their personal experiences, and whether they believe that because they were raised to believe that, or because they had some experience that lead them to believe that, doesn't make much difference.

Preach it brother man. I don't see the reason why religious people think they have to give a invisible friend credit for good things that they do or just happen but there invisible friend never has anything to do with anything bad my mother can't even drive out into the road without saying "thank you Jesus" it gets on my nerves I've gotten to the point when she says that knowing that I am a atheist I say thank you spaghetti monster or thank you Zeus or thank you Athena she has gotten to the point where everytime I do this I get a go to hell look

@@nightsshadow1678 I think it's something like: - they feel ashamed about a behavior, -> make that part of their identity (I AM shameful), -> then anything that prompts them to act differently must be not them. And if they perceive the new behavior as better, then it must have been a higher power. "Why do you think the same mind that got you into this mess could get you out?" - some 12 step dude (paraphrasing)

Yeah, that's absolutely it. Lloyd felt guilty about his porn habit. Maybe he saw that it made his wife feel uncomfortable, or maybe he completely invented the conflict because he'd already internalised an idea that porn was bad. Either way, he felt guilty about what he was doing, and projected that guilt as judgement from God. That's the whole story here.

@Zahn of Fire Sure, that sounds good. The one concern I have though, is that word (correct me if I'm wrong) is from an ancient language. Which might not be relevant to modern definitions of atheism. This is simply because the modern definition of atheism only came about within the last 150, or so, years. The whole concept of the Universe having a natural explanation arose with the advancement of science, which started in the late 1800's. Before then, an atheist was simply someone who didn't believe in a particular god, for example; a muslim was an "atheist" from a christian's perspective.

This is a sad case of what I see in Christian's. What I saw in myself looking back. You can't answer the question of the origin for your belief because there is no origin. It's more akin to brainwashing or implanted thoughts. I great up in a Christian cult and would have answered questions of my belief in this disjointed way because growing up isolated in the cult I didn't have context for my feelings of unbelief. When I finally found context for my doubt I was able to understand that I didn't have an answer for the question because I didn't believe. Also, this guy still watches sooooo much porn. Type "Po" or "x" into that guy's browser and you'll see just how much the spirit "came inside of him" (his words not mine.

@@mischarowe I used to think that, but isn't it more likely he's so polarizing because he uncovered a great yet disgusting truth about human psychology? If we assume that all our mental "software" is active in some form, albeit undeveloped, from birth then it's not that much of a stretch to think that our undeveloped/unconscious sexuality would begin to form attachments to whatever entities were closest to us who fulfilled the anatomical and emotional criteria of what would go on to become our sexual identity...and for most that would be the parent of the opposite sex. I know it's super uncomfortable to entertain that idea, and I am certainly not making any definitive claims, and Freud was a cocaine addict for many years who got a lot of things wrong. But on the other hand he was the first to postulate the idea that we all have an unconscious mind, which has become so widely accepted it seems obvious to us now and we often forget that Freud is largely responsible for the popularization of the idea.

@gou0630

Well saying he was not a believer, makes him special on christian circles, why? because non believers are like the "guys that do their research" So if one of those can be convinced of the existence of a god, that means it has to be real. A lot of less ethical atheist have used that assumption to pander to Christianity in order to sell books, about how they "found Jesus "
@dionettaeon

@@gou0630 I'm aware, it's a pathetic theist attempt to gain credibility, and we've heard callers make that move a lot lately on these shows; like the now infamous "inner circle atheist" on Talk Heathen. Though atheists who fake religious conversion like that to sell books or whatever are just as much con artists as psychics, faith healers, and televangelists.

It takes some hubris to call the show and pronounce you have evidence of a god. This guy just wanted to give his testimony, which was very long, wandering and tiresome. I agree he will have spoken of this previously, but in the company of believers who moaned amens and confirming bleats. I suppose, standing with those affirming murmurations could make someone think their 'story' has some value as 'evidence', or holds some persuasive power. It simply doesn't. Its a sad reflection on people just how low they set the bar when considering something worthy of the title evidence and unfortunately we see the results of that throughout the world again and again. Quite depressing to hear 'testimony' in that context.

After watching loads of these clips one thing that stands out among almost every theist caller is that when a question is asked of them, their reply is almost never a response to the question. It’s either some deepity dressed up in flowery language that is void of any actual content, or, and this is more common, they avoid the question completely and ramble about something unrelated in hopes that it will distract the host from the topic at hand. Once you notice it you can’t unsee it, and it starts to get frustrating.
