I think its funny how the one thing I really like about this movie is that theme that plays when James and Angela are drinking the pear brandy (and the zero-g bumping of uglies afterwards) but no one has that exact theme as an isolated track, not even the soundtrack itself. Its a terrible film. I like all the actors but, TERRIBLE.
@flyingteeshirts Жыл бұрын
It's pretty bad. I felt like the camera was always way to close to people and it was always at weird angles. There wasn't really a chance to just let the set and place breathe or even let the characters be in the setting. The plot really fell apart and the bad guy goes from toying with people setting up a subtle betrayal/attack to just icing everyone. A lot of aspects of the characters are set up then killed before there's any pay off. The AI becoming self-aware is just dropped when it's becoming relevant. The guy staring at the alien artefact is just killed. He's not turned evil or mutated or anything, just beat up randomly and thrown out an airlock. The ending is an absolute disaster with so many loose threads. Like, the supernova that will apparently strike earth in 50 years they caused, or like wtf is with the random announcement that she's pregnant at the end. The two people in the pod was cool-ish but looked really goofy with both of them getting a bright blue contact lens in one eye. Like, it's meant to represent that they got one of each other's eyes but neither of them had blue eyes lol. It's a fascinating film but also incredibly bad. Lots of random sex in zero G, like that scene with the pear brandy right after the dimension jump that crippled the ship and killed the captain. Like, it felt like it was a scene that was way out of place, but then it was apparently needed because of the whole bad guy is her former lover angle... Terrible plot design lol. The film is a testament to the fact that movies are miracles (it's a miracle it was ever released) and what can go wrong in film-making. There's a lot of cool ideas in the film, but the execution was terrible

I remember catching this on cable a few years back and being curious enough at the beginning that I wound up sitting through the entire thing really hoping that there would eventually be a good payoff to the plot or at least start to make a bit more sense. Between the somewhat decent (for its time) visuals and the amount of talent in the cast, this easily could have been a respectable film in the sci-fi genre, but it seemed like they just didn't want to take the time to improve the script and settled for a generic psycho/slasher movie set in space. This movieis strangely fascinating to me. The effects and sets are pretty good and have a unique look to them, the characters honestly all have good setups, and the concept of the ninth-dimensional bomb and its evolutionary effects is remarkably pulpy for a film that takes itself so seriously. It's just the editing and script that completely fall apart in the second half. MGM might as well have caved to another 5 million. With someone at the helm to put the film back on the rails, they might have at least broke even.
