I remember when I was in high school, I went to a vocational that taught about printing on a press, graphic design, t-shirt printing, and etc. There was one time where I needed to cut something (like a piece of paper or vinyl with an box cutter. My hand was the most shakiest hand out of everyone there and I was the more artistic kid of the group. My teacher would jokingly tease with me as I tried cutting the vinyl in a straight line EVEN with a ruler. And I would still make a crocked line. I feel yah Rae! We are the shaky hand people!!

Hands can be easy to do when you practice enough. You don’t even have to do a sketch of it and just go straight to lineart when you’ve ‘mastered’ hands. You can use references, tips and tricks, etc. It takes months or years to ‘master’ hands. You can learn the fundamentals first and then go to the icing on the cake! For any artists out there who ‘suck’ at drawings hands, you can do it!

I find it so cool that the artistic style that I tend to go for is starkly contrasting with her usually realistic so I REALLY appreciate videos like this where artists tackle a style that they've never tried before or don't generally use. I feel like I learned so much about color schemes and shading characters from this video because she literally listed out what she was doing step-by-step and why she was doing it. It's stuff like this that makes her one of my favorite art KZbinrs.

when practicing with what you struggle at, i highly recommend doing some studying instead of trial and error, its a lot less frustration. idk if deviantart still has a tutorial section but i did a LOT of growth there! books are also helpful, but unless its by a master of a *medium,* i dont recommend most books on art *styles* unless its by someone in that specific styles profession, and one whos style and taste is one you like. particularly if youre at a craft and art store, most of those are a lot more misses than hits, with the author commissioning artists for the book or trying to teach outside of what they know for money

Finelining tip that works for me: Make quick motions in small sections. This makes my lines much smoother, but you have to get comfortable with being able to stick closely to your sketch and being able to connect your lines together without leaving ink blobs and such.

I admire you so much for going outside your comfort zone, Rae. I was just thinking today about how when I was a kid I'd just sit down and go for what I wanted to draw. Somehow along the way, I've gotten so timid about "messing up" that all I'm doing is coloring... and even then, obsessing about messing up. Thank you for being such an inspiration. We're going to have to agree to disagree about Prismacolors and Crayola colored pencils, though. I found some old Crayolas, and decided to give them a whirl, only to discover they were practically unsharpenable due to all the knots in the wood casing. I have to concede that the color cores are good for the price, but what good is that if you keep breaking the cores trying to sharpen them? (Sorry for OT rant; I'm just really passionate about wood quality!) ;-D
