In the first test there's some biases. The filters are turned on and some filters are on full frequency but some have dips in the high frequency.
@joshuaadam17752 жыл бұрын
Absolutely right! Some of them were just too rolled off in the high freqs with their filters all the way open (Omnisphere, Hive), and with their filters enabled the resulting impression was more of a comparison of filter sound than oscillator. To make it more consistent, I disabled their filters. The other synths have varying high freq roll-off from their filters, but nothing distracting from the oscillators like Omni and Hive.

@@joshuaadam1775I think It was about 15 years ago I listened to that, the saws were damn enormous, im big in to SQ car audio systems, at least I've been before becoming a dad. now im Breaking my head on music production, stuck as hell and trying to figure out ONE SOFT SYNTH that works and im not looking at the monitor and don't finde the motivation to start. atm am somehow towards dune3 or even nexus 4.5 or maybe hive 2. honestly what would you advice for a beginner in music production for the long run? if you had to only pick one soft synth? from interface to workflow to sound? have pigments 4, komplete 13, and not one soft synth makes enough sense that motivates me to finally dive deep into it...I thought it was massive x, but wasn't. thank you for taking the time and answering this!

Thanks for the videos! Did all your videos back and forth a bit. I was expecting Dune 3 and Sylenth1 to come out higher, they where never bad, just others sounded a bit better. Spire seems clear winner, sounds like a better version of sylenth1. Ana 2 is interesting in its own way. Pigments, Surge and Zebra 2 sounded better than Dune 3 and Sylenth1 to me, but only included in one video, so its harder to make a judgement. Omnisphere as good if not better than spire on first showcase in this video, but second was bad.

Love these comparison videos! I'm trying to decide between whether I should buy Hive, Spire, or Dune. They all sound excellent, but I'm currently slightly leaning towards Hive because I prefer its UI over both Spire and Dune's UI.
@joshuaadam17752 жыл бұрын
Hive definitely has the best UI. Have you demoed all of them? I would suggest pushing them to their limits, which is something I don't do in these videos, I just do these videos to show that they can all sound nearly identical to each other and that all the stuff people say online about xyz synth's supersaw being more appropriate for modern EDM or one sounding "dated" is total nonsense haha. If you haven't already, try maxing out the resonance on each filter in each synth and spending a long time thinking about how you like the way they sound as they begin to approach that breaking point (meaning, resonance values fairly high, but less than max). Consider also that Dune has a wavetable editor which is, for my sound design process, very useful. I personally tend not to use Hive much because I hate the fact that you can't mix and match components from each engine mode (Dirty, Normal, Clean). Like, I wish I could use the Clean filter with Dirty's unison detune algorithm and Normal mode's envelopes algorithm. This makes the synth feel really limited to me, there is always something about one of the modes I don't like, so I just end up using a different synth with more control. I also hate that the delay and reverb effects reduce the volume so dramatically, whereas they don't on Spire or Dune. Ultimately though there's no wrong choice. They're all really good.
@shmedddy48262 жыл бұрын
@@joshuaadam1775 Thank you for your detailed reply! I've only briefly played around with each synth, but this weekend I will definitely do a deep dive on each one. You bring up excellent points about Hive and the limitations associated with its different engine modes. I also noticed the volume reduction associated with the delay and reverb effects while using Hive which can be pretty annoying. The fact that Dune has an integrated wavetable editor is a super nice addition, so I might just have to give Dune a closer look.

thanks for the demonstration.. for future bass/synthpop it’s spire that I need? I’m trying to decide between spire or serum.. I’m a noob at production.
@joshuaadam17753 жыл бұрын
I'd choose Spire in a heartbeat. Better core sound, better filters, better effects, and uses less CPU. It's also on sale right now for $129. Serum is never on sale. But if you need tutorials, there' s a lot more tutorials out there for Serum than for Spire.
@PB72UK2 жыл бұрын
I have both but use spire more , but both are great to be fair , but serum needs a powerful system

@joshuaadam17752 жыл бұрын
Yeah IMO, it wasn't good enough to include it again :( Not a fan of the filters and there's something weird with the amp envelope's attack phase, and as for the supersaw sound itself I just wasn't impressed. I also was using a demo in the previous video.
