7 years ago I brought my Shiba, Roshi, home the day he turned 8 weeks. One night when he was only about 3-4 months old, I was taking him out one last time before bed. It was so windy I thought he'd fly like a kite, and suddenly right next to us someone's gate flew open, and a huge pit bull lunged out and attacked. I threw myself between them and yelled at Roshi to run. He did run away, but he didn't want to go far without me. The pit kept trying to go after him, and I wrapped myself around it, trying to pin it to the ground. It was stronger than me though, and kept trying to kill my little Roshi. I had an adrenaline rush and summoned crazy strength to lift the dog up and throw it away from us. I was screaming for help the whole time, and nobody came. Finally the owner came running out and the pit ran off, the owner chasing it. I was on the ground laying there very weak, and the first thing I felt was Roshi licking me and whimpering. A kind woman found us and helped, making sure we got home okay. Ever since, Roshi has been there to protect me. He snuggles close to me and loves when I pet him and hold him. When we walk he refuses to walk beside me, but in front of me instead, as if he's protecting me in his own way from any coming danger. He's almost always at my side, and has protected me from real danger many times.

A Shiba was my first dog. I would not recommend one for a first time dog owner. You really have to know how to handle a dog properly to get the best out of Shiba, otherwise you have a cute little terror that rules the house. Properly trained they are the BEST dog! Although some really can't go off a lead (you may never see him again-they run like lightening) I've been a cat person all my life and, yes, Shibas are very cat like which is one of the things I love about them. The intelligence is a plus and a minus. Sometimes they are too smart for their (and our) own good. Having Adian put Shibas in my heart forever and I will have another one day.

I have a Shiba/German Shepherd mix and while she's not very food motivated, She still wants to please her humans. The big shiba traits she has is her big pointy ears, her red fur, cleanliness, intelligence, quirky behavior and quietness. Full of Shiba Inu spunk! My life was unsettled at the time, maybe she knew how much she was needed. In our first year together we moved three times and she hung in there with me. Katie is 9 now, still loves to run tho she stays close to home. We live in a rural wooded area that gives her a lot of space to be a Shiba Inu. Truly can't imagine a city or apartment lifestyle for this breed, but given their intelligence and loyalty no doubt they would adapt. Wonderful dogs!

Especially the going for a walk routine where he pretends he doesn’t want to go and trots around the room a few times before he decides he might let us harness him up. So cat like in that way where he’s trying to let us know, it’s his decision and on his time. As example, because the former caretakers can no longer take care of them or simply something has changed with the owners. This would be very interesting to know.

I drove home 18 miles (rural driving) with her on my lap. Yes, carefully; she's 45 lb. We've been best buds ever since. Yup, I also have an issue with our 3 year old Shiba female. We adopted her last week Thursday from a breeder. She wasn't taught the basics & we are training her to go for walks on a harness and leash. She'll walk for a certain amount of time and just stop. She won't walk any further, doesn't matter what we do. Sometimes after waiting and waiting she'll carry on walking but not always. I would also love advice on how to stop this, if possible and have more enjoyable walks and perhaps hikes.

I have an almost 2-year old male Shiba. He doesn’t like eating much and is very picky. Some say not to “spoil” him by giving different kibbles to try or to hand feed him. Is there a way the eating pattern can be more consistent so that he eats by himself? I’m just worried because he doesn’t even reach 3/4 cup of kibbles a day.
@SuperShiba2 жыл бұрын
If there is no medical condition that cause him to lose appetite. Have you try free feeding? meaning to leave food out all the time so he can eat whenever he wants. If his form looks healthy(not unhealthy skinny) he is probably ok nutritious wise. When Jimmy was much younger he doesn't have good appetite and our vet recommended us to do free feeding that seems to solve most issues. Hope it helps, good luck!

We had the same issue with our Shiba. It started from the very young age. He would not eat his food even if we would let it out for hours. We solved the problem by adding toppings to his food. You may have a Shikoku ken. My rescue Tomo (Tomodachi) was described as a Shiba when I got her at age 4. However, she weighs 45 lb. After 2 years, I searched the web and have determined that Tomo is a Shikoku ken. I think she came from an Amish puppy mill. She looks like a Shiba (sesame) but has a longer body. She demonstrates a hunting instinct; has targeted voles, rabbits, and a snake on our rural acres. She can tell when she is inside the house that there is SOMETHING in the back yard! It was a deer. Hard to imagine how a Shikoku ken got to rural Wisconsin; maybe she was brought as a hunting dog. But she is freaked by gunshots. She is very loyal, and loves to eat. We are lucky to have her.

One good thing about training them at the same time is they will pick up when one gets a reward and mimick the behavior. As I mentioned in a comment above, currently getting them used to a harness and leash is a nightmare. I had zero issue with this on my first shiba set. He cannot eat anything containing broccoli or he will have painful gas that smells horrendous, this broccoli food intolerances is apparently common in Shibas. He is very picky about his food and has definite preferences about which protein source is his main meal, so far he has no objections to duck but will not eat turkey at all, with other meats falling on a sliding scale of palatability in between those extremes.

Training ? don't bother . the only command that i wish my shiba would follow is "come" . but even this is not a problem because if she doesn't come then i go and pick her up and take her where i want . ipad a kangal dog before the shiba and they are a thousand times more difficult . i don't believe in "training dogs so i don't have a problem with her quirky behavior. in fact i like it that she thinks for herself . if you train a dog too much they lose their character .

I didn't find that to be the case after doing intensive training with Adian. The only thing he lost was his undesirable traits(some of them were dangerous). He seemed to be more settled and content when bettertrained

Why do some look dopey. I dont the dopey ones are pure breeds. They look like a corgy mix. lol The pure breed ones look more mature.

come on, I also own a Shiba, and I love her so damn much, but lets be honest here. They are not intelligent dogs, maybe slightly higher than the average but thats it. Intelligent dogs are like golden retriever, kangal, german shepherd, labrador etc. Maybe they are intelligence in the form of hunting small game but not with following/understanding humans.
