For the 3rd time in as many years, I've had a significant branch fall from the trees in front of my house. I hired an arborist to come to check them out and I had to remove them, then the expensive part comes along. Ah the joys of home ownership!

Funny story, being in the direct sun they need to be painted with a paint with an LRV value of 55 or higher. Buying from an architectural site you would think they would know better, that happened within 3 months of purchase. The black paint they used has an LRV rating of 5, been working on trying to sort it out with them for months now. Everyone always wants to blame someone else.

LRV is the Light Reflectance Value. Black is the lowest at 0 and white is 100. If you need above 55 then that means the shutters would have to be a light grey for example. Meaning you can’t get a black shutter with an LRV above 55. You might need to get a shutter made out of a material that can handle the heat that a black paint absorbs. If you want to keep the black color.

I worked for a tree company and that company you have there is absolutely fucked. The correct way is to go up the tree take off the big branches then take off the main trunk in sections and then lower them slowly with a crane. I think that's the first time they thought about how to cut down a tree. Unbelievable. I felt that tree hit the ground from here. I would look for cracks in my foundation and walls after that bs.
@UndefinedStasis
@UndefinedStasis Жыл бұрын
They did go up into the tree and removed as many branches as they safely could. However, as you can tell from the tree literally exploding when it hit the ground, the trees were severely rotted. Attempting to section out the main shoot of a heavily rotted tree is a great way to place yourself in an early grave.

@UndefinedStasis
@UndefinedStasis Жыл бұрын
@@FishFind3000 imo it's not worth the risk once you've established that the tree is rotten, it's hard to tell the extent of the rot, the outside x amount of inches can be completely normal but the core can be completely gone(most dangerous type of tree). Additionally a rotten tree doesn't fall the same way as a healthy one, more prone to kick back/more unpredictable in general. As the OP mentioned the use of a crane would be very helpful but, you get what you pay for; 3500 for dropping and removing 5 trees is a very good rate. They also didn't want to remove the presumably healthy top portion of the tree so they could attach hoists to direct the fall. I would question how experienced they are though as it didn't appear as though they made an angular pie cut to help with the falling direction of the tree; solely relying on hoists.

I'd put Green Giant Arborvitaes in a row there. They hold up incredibly well with our northeast winters and will create the best screening from the street. The 8-10ft size is ideal because they have a more established root ball. I'd really wait till the spring if you can because the trees available now will be rough and have been sitting a long time at a nursery.

Wow, $3,500 is a hell of a deal! I have two 90' cottonwoods we're having removed in the next week or two. They're going to cost $5,000 to remove, but they overhang multiple property lines, and are too close to anything to be dropped in one shot. Just glad I have this guy and have worked with him before and know he does a good job. We have tree guys asking to quote us all the time because they spot them from the road. Last guy quoted me $5,700 for ONE of the trees. He was in disbelief when I politely explained he'd quoted well more than twice what my normal tree guy was going to charge.

Insurance covers more than $500, the cost is not really limited. It will cover the “reasonable cost to drop” AND “$500 for haul away per tree up to an aggregate of $1,000 for multiple trees *for haul away* However you’re right, the tree has to land on or damage a covered structure or driveway or handicap walkway. So typically the tree company will invoice it as $$$$$ for “drop” and $500 for haul away to get all the costs covered - I’m a property adjuster.

Not saying what they did was wrong. They made the cut and tried to pull the tree away from the house as much as possible. If that branch didn't break off like that then it would have been fine. They did an exhalant work and it was unfortunate that the branch broke off in such a way.
@dougholdem2898

The problem with planting the trees now is they will be exposed to sun light and not have a root system to provide the water needed. Much higher rate of success if you wait until April/May when the ground isn't frozen and you can water them as they are expanding their root system. Also, right now you are picking from what left over and didn't sell in 2022. In the Spring all of the seller will have fresh inventory. Consider staggering the new trees rather than a straight line. You have a deep lot which would allow this and the advantage is it will create a better visual barrier from the road. Especially if the new trees branches are wider on the bottom than further up the trees.

Rob I work in the tree industry my advice would be to grind the stumps. You can use the wood chips to fill in the hole and lay some top soil and sod over them. If you pull them it’s going to leave massive holes where you’ll have to haul a lot of dirt in. Not to mention how hard it’s going to be to get them out.

As he's replacing them, wouldn't that also depend on those replacement trees? I'm not in the industry, but remember a video showing how tree transplants were done. So a funky machine with a big 'ice cream scoop' to carve out the root ball, and lift & support it to the transport. So presumably planting the new trees is going to need holes large enough to fit those roots. So thinking it may be better to dig out the stumps, save the soil and wood chips and use those to bed in the new trees. Otherwise it'd be filling the holes and digging back out again when the new trees arrive.

I had two more quotes that included trimming the arborvitae and removing another tree and it was $400. They did it right. Took out the big maple from top to bottom. And also the other things. So we split the $400 since we both got trimming and the other work done on our properties and $200 each was great. Your trees were a lot larger, but as others have said, trees are normally taken down from the top in sections. Even the maple which was much shorter than your trees was taken down that way. You shouldn't go all lumberjack on them.

Hope you sold the wood. Just plant a hedge. Grind the stumps. That’s good plant food. Build a concrete wall with wood forms. Makes a nice wood pattern. Stain the concrete brown. Plant a hedge on each side with some semi mature ones. By the time you get the wall done it will be spring and you can plant. Put some IR beams on top of the wall to detect if anyone hops it. Don’t use blocks. Make sure you dig out the base and put 4ft underground with steel. Keep cars from going through it. Take a look at peoples wall hedges in Los Angeles. You’d have no idea there was a mansion behind some. Probably some type of evergreen hedge. Wouldn’t want it to thin out during the winter.

All of this will be worth it. It will look great. A bit more scenery. A bit more privacy. Just small touches to a home make it that much better.

Damn the tree trimmers really just cowboy it in NJ 😂 Around where I live they would cut those trees down 10 ft sections at a time or something like that. They really just took a chainsaw to the base and let the whole ass 50 ft tree fall straight towards your house 😮 I hope they at least measured the distance to make sure they couldn’t hit the house…

you got a $3,500 service for sure. The 5k guy wouldn't have projectiles flying at your house. Your yard probably looks like a tee box for giants

A nice big fence would be cool too if it’s allowed, otherwise hedges

I guess the exploding tree was on its last legs and ready to disintegrate at any time. And they were much higher than I thought they were. Is there an ordinance that you have to have trees on the road frontage ? I think a wall and a box hedge growing over it would be much less maintenance. I'm not a fan of evergreen trees. But I guess with deciduous trees, you get leaves falling.

That’s a good deal. They were smart taking it down like that, it was so brittle it was very dangerous otherwise.

Should've measured distances and lopped off the top maybe 20 feet, but hey, I've never held a chainsaw in my life.

$3,500 is a good deal for that amount of work. A rock wall along the front of the property will look great.

Grinding stumps is not expensive and surprisingly simple. For all those trees…$300-$500 tops! You can do it yourself without any training or danger. You’re welcome.

If you knew you were going to take the stumps out could have left 3-4 feet of trunk , makes it a lot easier getting the stumps out as can push and leverage Any services in the ground out there ? Water ? Gas ?

hell i could take them stumps out for less all you need is a really long drill bit hits it from the top and the side and light it on fire and burn them down simple reason your not going to get all the roots anyways by the time your done is just going to be one hole burn them from the inside out

I have not read all 377 comments, but if you're concerned about security enough to install that gate (I remember watching the video that caused you to have that built), you need to fence in the front of the yard to prevent a would-be thief to not simply drive around the gate.
