I love DaVinci paints too. You might want to check out their color called Jackson Blue; it’s very similar to French Ultramarine but a touch more purple. It’s so Luscious that it takes my breath away.

💙 Fun fact! 💙 The different shades of ultramarine are due to how fine or course the pigment is ground. French UM has a much bigger pigment size, so it granulates heavily. UM Green Shade has a much finer grind and the granulation is much more subtle. Thanks so much for the video Irit! You're colour choices are so inspiring!

Thanks for sharing!! Very interesting! I knew French UM was more granulating but never really checked why. As for the green shade or red shade, I still don't know how those subtle shade differences are achieved. Is it only because of grinding level? That doesn't seem logical to me ( understand how it would affect the granulation, but not the shade), maybe you know :)

Yes, the color difference is also due to the different particle size. I'm not sure on the physics of it though. Upon further reading, ultramarine particles vary in size when they are synthesized. Those are then separated based on their size and produce the different shades. So it's not "ground" to different sizes, but separated.

This Nickel Azo Yellow by DS is the only one that is "pushy". What it does when it touches another color is amazing. I have other brands for my PY150 and none of them react the same way as DS. My other two favorites are from Schmincke and Sennelier.

The da Vinci opus pink I tried recently and it was so nice and smooth compared to other fluorescent colors I have used.

DS's cascade green in gouache is absolutely stunning! It's more opaque than their watercolor cascade green. Anywho. That's my 2 cents. DS watercolor green apatite is a gorgeous granulating green. Thank you for the video!

Wonderful, inspiring, delicious colors! You pick the best! Question: does red shade UM lean purple? I think I have green shade in W&N. I’ll have to compare the UM’s sometime. I have Qor and Maimeri Blu which I find very pigmented and I love both! And did you say you mix Naples yellow with cobalt teal? Fascinating! I’ll have to try it!!
