And this is why you are a good husband. My wife died in January and since then I've been sending money to her sister every month to make sure she has enough to get by. I take care of her daughter and grandchildren because they are family. I don't make a lot of money but a hundred here and a hundred there can really help out other people. Buying my step-grandchild a load of kitchenware for her first apartment is so much better than spending it on a night of sushi. This is what a man does.

Hi Chuck, my name is Jay, I was born in Thailand. My mom's home is in Lampang. My stepfather met my mom in udontani during in the early 70s during the Vietnam, they were married in lampang in 1975. After the war, we were station at Kirkland Air Force base in Albuquerque, New Mexico. I have been here now for 43 years and I have been yearning to come to thailand to retired someday. Life here in USA is okey, but sometime I get homesick of wanting to come back to thailand sooner, but just like you I will set my goal and planning to come back to thailand. All your vlog inspired me to be happy and to keep my head up day by day, because life is not wasting away on daily grinds and unhappy of the things you don't want to do anymore. Life is to give things or make stuffs to others, so that their happiness is what makes us happy in return. You and Paige make a great couple and I can see both of you guys are always happy about life. Keep going Chuck you guys are AWESOME. Sawadee kap.

Dear jay, you are right that in life we have to give, but let's say that 70% Thai relationships is based on money. When you meet someone that is poor and you love for what she is without thinking about if she got money or not, I think that from the other side have to be the same. Thai culture it's only based on money and face, and you know that. Western culture maybe in different way it's quite similar but in Thai culture relationship between western and Thai it's only based on money.

Hey Chuck! I think you have a wonderful attitude on this subject both with regards to Family life in Thailand (and the rest of the World) and the people who get off on making unpleasant and derogatory comments. You'll never please everyone Chuck. I've been married to 3 UK women and each one cost me a fortune during the marriage and at the end after working hard in the army and often working 60+ hours/week as a civilian. I've now been with my Thai girlfriend almost 5 years, built a house, granny flat for her mother, bought a pick-up, motorbikes etc. I don't give a rats arse what other people think, I'm living my life for me, my girlfriend and her family. Rural life is great as I get to do what I want, when I want.. I often buy in food and drink and have impromptu parties with the locals and never expect anything in return. I've kicked out all the negative people in my life and feel great for doing so. I've seen the bad side of Thai women that have/are playing their foreign boyfriends and husbands but also the same in reverse. To me, money is unimportant as long as I can afford a few beers a day then I'm happy. That said, I'm comfortably off here and my military pension provides me with enough income but I quite willingly give most of that to my girlfriend. I got bored with her asking for money for this, that and the other so I gave her what I thought we could live on then raised it steadily until she no longer asks lol. Anyway, there's my two penneth worth, keep up the good work. I occasionally post some things on KZbin so feel free to take a look. Nothing fancy though😆

Sin-sod is a dowery that , in Thailand, is the offering treasure to the bride family. It’s to show appreciation for having been raised their daughter well enough to be your bride. It’s to show gratitude. In Thailand a person with no gratitude is consider a bad person. All children in Thailand were growing up embracing the mentality of being a well gratify person. The well gratify person is the person who take good care of his or her parents.

Sin-sod is an old tradition that's been around in Thailand. Long ago, bride & groom didn't even meet prior to their wedding day. Sin-sod given by the groom is a promise that he will show up to the wedding regardless of how attractive the bride is :) Now a days, sin-sod is used as an appreciation gift to the bride's family for taking care of her all these years & allowing the groom to marry their daughter. Sin-sod is used in all classes of Thailand. How much sin-sod is appropriate depends on the status of the bride's family, education, etc. Basically, her family can ask for any amount. Sometimes the amount may be high if the parents don't approve of the future son-in-law just to discourage him. But sometimes the parents may ask for a high amount knowing it's a lot more than what the potential groom have to see if he is very serious, and is willing to work hard to save up in order to provide for their daughter. Some family will give the sin-sod back to the couple to start out their new life together. Along with sin-sod, there's also an engagement gift. This is assets that will go directly to the bride for her to keep. Basically it's a way for the groom to show how much he values her as his bride. Sorry, long explanation but I hope this help clarify the tradition of sin-sod.

Giving is a good thing and people should do more of that. But when you make all the money sometimes the wife and family can ask for too much. Not your situation but the situation of a lot of farangs in Thailand. I gave and gave but it was never enough because I didn't have a good Thai wife. So YES I am a little bitter and knew when to shut the funds down when a request was unreasonable. I do think if you buy things that are not in your name you are setting yourself up for disaster if the relationship goes south. The main reason your situation is different is your wife is good but not all of us are so lucky. She also has money already this is HUGE. If she didn't have money your situation could be far different.

You're also right that not everyone in Thailand wants to bleed you dry, because everyone's different, but let's be honest......that does happen sometimes but not just in Asia. Chuck, very well said in all respects. My 1st was American, my 2nd was Phillipino (due to pregnancy, wrong reason to get married), and 3rd and last is Thai. Most complainers or critiques are shallow and materialistic. A wise friend once said, you'll never feel richer than when you can help other people. I think sinsod is mis-understood here, it applies to Thai's and Farangs as well. My wife's 2 daughters have long time boyfriends and the girls have said the guys are worried about sinsod due to the house we built. Many outsiders have closed minds and ways, I ignore them and let them have their own opinions. Stay happy and positive.

Chuck, I think what bothers these haters the most is that they see that you are living life as you wish and you are happy. While they live in their mothers basement and can't afford to do anything so the only entertainment they have in their miserable life is to sit behind a keyboard in their boxer shorts and attack others. You have chosen you destiny, and are happy. They have chosen theirs, so more misery to them. Tell the family hello.

I always think that i) help which facilitates other things, or ii) pays big and obvious dividends, is very different from iii) chucking money at "new ventures", and iv) consumer goods. If someone already fixes motorcycles or they farm, and they've done it for years, then buying them some tools is almost certainly going to work. A solar panel that drives a fan or a pump is almost certainly a win. But financing a restaurant for someone who has never run one probably won't work. And handbags and phones are a bottomless pit, and the desire for them is never a great sign.

I understand and support you. I also have the best Thai in-laws who treat me as if I was their blood son. It’s sad to hear all the negative comments. All we can do is pray for them. Keep your head up.

Don’t disagree with your approach and situation, however there are Thai families that see a farang as an ATM and a means to improve their social status.

You have common and ethical sense! Many or some Thais are not like the ones in her family though! They will take and lie to get ahead like the ones you described. My wife and I cut several family members and friends out for lying about her and my money. Many are prone to abandoning their kids and we took care of two children for almost one year while her mom suckered us out of money and then split all together. my wife gets upset when most Thais increase prices whenever not posted after seeing my face. She agrees most are dishonest! My wife is like your wife and her family but her family and ex friends are con artists.

Traveling man Yes I think a lot of people think this way. We stay away from people like this also along with negative people. But we have to recognize it and just accept it for who they are.

Truths are always solutions! The U.S is far more dishonest and corrupt to be fair! As a History buff too like you,I see how all is connectable .

Hey Chuck and Paige! I've watched a ton of your vids, am a vet too but way younger lol...44... Funny I was just in South East Asia met a girl and completely understand where ur coming from in this video...it's cool u take the time to try to explain the situation to people I guess that's the responsibility of the vlogger..... What is the usual sin-son amount farangs should give to families? Does it vary? Or is it what u can afford? Lol I met a great girl from Bangkok when I was there in Feb/march...never felt like she wanted my money, but I could see how much farther my retirement/disability income could go if I committed fully to this girl... Of course she wants me to move in with her and her family, etc...but it's just such a different dynamic there in Thailand....u do a great job showing that, and wow ur a lucky guy....!! Paige does seem like a sweet gal.. If I come back I plan to do an Issan tour, maybe we will stop and say hi!
