I just came across this video and see that you use a lot of different products than I usually see. But, I'm just starting out this past year, so have been practicing with some Monster high dolls I purchased second hand. I've had a few of them get a bit sticky after I spray them with a couple of thin layers of Mr. Super Clear. For vinyl dolls, do you use something different, or have any tips on how to seal them without this happening? Thank you for your videos! I always enjoy them!

I've noticed that I tend to be more adventurous with supplies, haha. :) Vinyl dolls are really difficult--I've tried a lot of different sealants but the only one that consistently works for me is Mr. Super Clear... but it also seems to depend on the doll. I think the biggest problem is finding a doll that has not had anything else used on it and has been cleaned with the right materials, because once a sealant, paint, or cleaner causes the vinyl to turn sticky, it will continue to be sticky no matter what you're using on it. It's not the sealant itself that gets sticky, but the plasticizers that seep out of the vinyl in response to certain chemicals. MSC seems to be the least likely to cause it, but if the vinyl is already having problems, it will eventually turn sticky no matter what you do. Different environments can cause vinyl to break down, too--some of my Barbies from my childhood turned sticky when all they had on them was the factory paint, just because the vinyl started to break down. It's unfortunately very hard to predict what vinyl dolls will do, but once they have gone sticky one time, it will continue to happen. :( There is one thing I have heard helps, though I haven't had a chance to use it myself. SEM makes a sealant specifically for vinyl that's leaching plasticizer. It's called Tac Free, and while it's a satin finish, you should be able to use MSC over the top to do a faceup and eliminate the shine. I've heard great things about it, but like I said, I haven't had a chance to use it yet so I don't know the specifics on how it should be used. Anyway, I hope that helps a bit!

Do you have a video of just body blushing? I just got my first doll and want to do all the blushing, faceup, and sueding myself but I'm having a hard time finding a good video tutorial on body blushing here on youtube. Most videos is just someone speed blushing and no talking. I really love your channel and your videos and I've learned a lot.

That's one of the things that's been on my to-do list for AGES, but I've hesitated to do it because of KZbin having their growing pains with not being able to decide if naked dolls are content made for children, or inappropriate for viewing. 🤦 Fortunately that has leveled out, so I'm hoping to do a video dedicated to body blushing as I'm getting a doll back together after some WIP modifications.

Ooo using floor polish for fantasy blushing is a great idea! May I ask if you have issues removing it? If not I may have to utilise your idea :)
@LomisPlayground
@LomisPlayground 8 жыл бұрын
+saharaliBJD I'm actually in the process of removing 5 year old fantasy blushing sealed with the Minwax stuff (that had next to no chipping) and it's stubborn in some places, but I haven't needed to sand anything. I used multiple coats on the leg parts since they were airbrushed for a skintone match and those have taken a bit more elbow grease, but the stuff on the feet, which were only finished with one coat of Minwax, comes off fairly easy. I do find that it's easier to remove with acetone than with alcohol or Winsor & Newton brush cleaner, but on cast resin parts, it's safe to soak them in Winsor & Newton for an hour or so and then use an old toothbrush to scrub it out of the stubborn places. I've been super happy with it, so I plan on using it again when it's time to repaint these pieces.

What would you suggest to someone who doesnt have an airbrush to use for sealant on MH dolls? I'm getting the Citadel Purity Seal for my BJD's but I recently got some MH I want to play around with! Also I cant get hold of MSC easily in the UK :/

I haven't had good luck with Purity Seal on vinyl dolls. It always turns sticky after a few weeks, no matter how I spray it. I've used Liquitex medium as a brush-on sealant without any stickiness issues, though. I found it works best if thinned a little and applied using a sponge instead of a regular paint brush, because that way you don't have any brush stroke marks.

So what's the deal with that bondo stuff? I understand it smoothes over the apoxie work and it is red? Do you have to paint over the redness or....... how does that work basically? :-) lol
@LomisPlayground
@LomisPlayground 8 жыл бұрын
+MaidenTrollBlood Yeah, you do have to paint over it. I usually use white acrylic to cover up the red, then I do color matching with pastels or acrylic paints over the top. Unfortunately, most of the filler putties available are really dark colors. The Tamiya putty is super dark gray, so it has the same issue. 2-part Bondo filler is a light pink and doesn't need as much coverage, but since I airbrush most of my color matches these days, it doesn't make a big difference for me to do a coat of white to cover the mods first. You can also create your own custom-colored filler putty by mixing an epoxy clay like Milliput or Apoxie Sculpt, tinting it with pastels or a bit of acrylic paint, and then thinning it to a putty with acetone. I'm just too lazy to do that when I know I'll be airbrushing the end result anyway! :)

+Lomi's Playground Oh thanks that was so helpful! Yeah I've had bondo on my ebay watch list since I think I saw you show it in another vid lol. And it is a recent development that I need an airbrush now, so I'll have that soon lol. I figured I would need it for modding. :-) Thanks again for being so cool!

+MaidenTrollBlood You're welcome, I'm always happy to help! I definitely know I wouldn't be where I am if not for the help and support of my friends, so as I meet people in this hobby I want to pass on as much as I can.

I was wondering if you knew of any alternatives to use in place of the Pearl Ex powders. I just did a quick Amazon search for them and they are quite expensive for someone on a Covid-19 budget. Do you know of any similar and perhaps a little cheaper powders that would work the same way? And thank you so much for this video!
@LomisPlayground
@LomisPlayground 4 жыл бұрын
Pearl-ex is really just specific mixtures of mica powders to achieve certain colors, so if you look places like eBay, you should be able to buy packets of mica in various colors to create your own blends. I won't lie, I mostly like the Pearl Ex because they come in the little jars already labeled, so it's harder for me to mess up XD

Do you still use the purity seal? Because I cant seem to find it online
@LomisPlayground
@LomisPlayground 4 жыл бұрын
Purity Seal was unfortunately discontinued, so it's not an option anymore. They replaced it with an updated version which is also resin-safe, called Munitorum Varnish. I haven't used it myself, since my local hobby shop started stocking Mr. Super Clear for me when I asked, but I hear the Munitorum Varnish has a semi-matte finish so faceups done with it look a little more "dewy."
