Episode 7 with Dr. Tom Oetting
My residency program director dropped by to chat. He made me into the joke-telling ophthalmologist I am today.

Eye doctor here, this week my colleague was operating on a healthy patient with cataracts, no previous conditions. He had a cardiac arrest mid surgery. Anesthesia took the wheel and resuscitated him while my colleague looked over from the corner. So two things, you don't really want an ophthalmologist for heart emergencies and two, no you CAN'T operate cataracts during a cardiac arrest XD

You're not the only ones with belly laughs, trust me. Amazingly funny episode! I didn't know this kind of program director existed. The humor on top of all the wholesome stories you already told about him makes dr. Oetting really allrounded.

It was really fun as a non-medical-professional. I had a really really great time and the honesty is just refreshing, because it's not "brutally honest" but instead the honesty of genuinely caring people! :D I LOVE vet stories :D Humans, too, are part of the animal kingdom.

Knock knock Hi is the only podcast I’ve watched more than one episode of, and definitely the only one that’s made me laugh out loud in the middle of class. I can’t watch an episode without smiling! You’re both hilarious! Please keep making people smile! And keep the skits coming!

on pranking docs: My family doctor was at a teaching hospital - when i was younger, I'd get various residents who would notice that I didn't have any family history in my file.. So they'd ask all these questions about the health and health problems of my parents and grandparents. a few times, I let this go on for 20 minutes before saying "um... does it make any difference that I was adopted?" Damn, you accomplished so much while dealing with some of the most difficult challenges people can be faced with. You’re awesome, and your farcical commentary on the medical and medical education systems are absolutely on point and hilarious. Keep it up hombre. Wishing you the best sir.

Love this and all your content! Commenting this here, because while not 100% related there's a greater chance you'll see it: Can you redo the first day of nephrology video? Only instead, when the nephrologist asks if he has two functioning kidneys the answer is "no, I donated one" with his subsequent reaction. It would be a funny and neat way to raise awareness for kidney donation, especially non-directed donation.

So, I am a fairly longtime watcher of the basic skits because they are hilarious and it rings home as a medical provider, but I have to say the longer format podcasts do not hold the same appeal, at least for me and my day to day schedule. I would love to see a hybrid podcast that features some skit work that also then incorporates serious discussion with guests. I know I know, It’s a lot to ask, but it may garner more followers and get a broader message across. Love the work, keep it up.

I have no concept of a supportive or stable PD. This entire interview blew my mind. Edit: wait. Some PDs have their resident’s backs? Blowing my mind. Some of us are still trying to literally recover mentally from residency. It’s encouraging that some programs aren’t malignant. I did warn applicants about my program at their interviews. They need to know.

I've no medical degree. I thought the show was hilarious! And it'd be SO GREAT if you had the occasional veterinarian on the show! There's Dr. Rachel Exotic Pet Vet on the KZbin. Also large animal vet practices are a whole other bailiwick.

Residency makes sleep nearly impossible; jaundiced view is old MDs are jealous of all their residents who have the new medical knowledge recently crammed into their heads.... True? At least the story line for a dark comedy.

OK here's a question, I thought residency was like a general training and then you go to a more specialized thing? Like you would do "surgery" and then "ophthalmology"? Or would it just be an "ophthalmology residency"? Also, if you are a type 1 diabetic, I feel like you deserve to joke about it if you want to, find the silver lining where you can :)

Oh, oh!! One small input! I almost forgot!!! When you introduce your "alter egos" as Dr. & Lady and then switch to introductions with your real life names, I suddenly - admittedly stupidly so - got startled and asked mysef "Wait, where's his real life medical title? He IS a real life doctor though, isn't he?" And then I slowly remembered the context and relaxed. My brain caught me off guard and sent me into a little panic there! I guess because scam and fake news and all that is everywhere, I'm subconsciously more on edge, when I spot an inconsistency in the "quality of souce" area. It's not a big deal at all. I still wanted to let you know that it can be a thing and can be a source of confusion. In my case I stopped in my tracks. And that's the beginning of the video. X'D It took a whole moment, till I could proceed and get to the parts that would have clarified stuff. I just wondered what that would look like for any new viewer/listener. :)
