Kyle I couldn't agree with you more about people who just "DO." My brother and father died within two days of one another. They were the closest people in my life. My friend that I hadn't seen in at least 15 years drove down from New Jersey to North Carolina and stayed with me for a while no strings, just support. She left her family and her work to help me through. That was the biggest gift anyone could has ever given me. I've known her for 30 plus years but we didn't see much of one another after she left NC and moved away, although we kept in contact pretty regularly. I never realized the incredible woman she'd grown to be. Her support was above and beyond... I am so fortunate to have this person as a friend and remain grateful.

LOVED the part about DOING. When I was struggling with my mental health and in a very scary and dark place, my parents stayed with me for three weeks. During that time, my dad bought me a a working vacuum (hadn’t vacuumed my apartment in a year and a half) and vacuumed my space; ordered me cable, bought me groceries and my mom cooked a bunch of meals for me and put them in the freezer.

One of the most valuable things my counselor has taught me is that when you are flooded with emotion, there’s only one thing that can help, and that’s feeling less alone. Facts don’t help, comparing to others doesn’t, neglect doesn’t, cheerleading doesn’t, you need someone to sit there in the grief or anger or sadness with you and say “I see you. I hear you. You are not alone, I’m here and I care.” It sounds simple, but it’s so hard to train our brains not to problem solve - I’m an engineer, it’s what I do! Plus emotion makes others uncomfortable, and we know that and we don’t want to impose. But the person who will suck up that awkward and sit in the emotion with you? That person is the real deal. And maybe we can all try to be that person.

The worst is the people who tell you about the mother or father or brother they lost 10 or 20 years ago. It was my time to grieve my loved one. What are you supposed to say to somebody particularly when they start crying when they're talking about their loss. I can't tell you how often that happened. I know people mean well and want to connect but they have no idea how they're adding to your burden

I'm sorry that your cousin is going through so much. I believe supporting your cousin in the way you would want to be supported. No judgement but love, if necessary, correction but in love, and just support. If you were going through the same thing, how would you want to be talked to, how would you want to be supported, how would you want to be loved, how would you want to be looked at? Just being there to listen, just being there to encourage, just being there to make sure they don't do anything to hurt themselves, and if that's making sure they are going to inpatient treatment, so be it. And the most important thing is for them to know they have purpose, what they are feeling is temporary and they can receive help. God loves them. Jesus died for us all and He rose again on the third day. He wants us to know that they don't have to be trapped, or in the darkness because He's the light. Repentance (turning away from sin that separates you/them from God) and just truly surrendering to God and His purpose for our lives is the best thing that anyone can do. John 14:6 "Jesus said to him, I am the way, the truth and the life. No one can come to the Father but by Me." God bless you and I hope your friend is better and will feel better!
