Supreme Commander - FAF Cast

Great cast Gyle, there were a lot of things happening this game and you caught some moments that I hadn't noticed watching it back. It's certainly much harder than it looks! For those who liked the setup, I'm teaming up with a mapmaker to make a map inspired by this one. It's really cool how the 2v1 asymmetry leads to naval supported amphibious assaults, which is something I just generally want to see more of. Who doesn't want to watch a D-Day re-enactment on faf?

This map is a thing of beauty. It consolidates all early fighting into two spots on opposite ends of the map, making two small, violent fronts for fighting, and unless cybran, naval used to conquer such a front cannot be used to push after it's been taken.

That Ythotha Dday invasion against red at 29:30 was awesome. Lots of team cooperation with friendly support of cruisers, ground spam, and air support against the ground emplacements and lots of enemy air. Looked like an intense futuristic laser disco battle.

Then the glorious air battle over the top during the second attempt on that base. The resulting mass field was pretty thick.

@@Zoey-- At this level it is a standard play for sniping things. It is a matter of timing that Ctrl+K exactly right, but Wesh is an extremely experienced player. This guy is 1800-rated after all.

The most produced Navy Experimental is the Megalith. It...sorta counts as an Amphibious Naval Unit due to having really powerful torpedoes and can fire its cannons while mostly submerged.

If you look up Gyle's older videos with titles around "Phantom Mod". I think he had like 2-3 gameplay cast on it. They're all Navy heavy. Large Navy fights usually end up being a Tug-a-War.

Wonderful, wonderful game this. Among the best ones I've seen. And it would make a fantastic e-sport (with Gyle commenting).. There's so much to FAF, deep strategy and fast reflexes noticing an opportunity to strike the decisive blow.

Another day where I yell at my screen as a player sits on the verge of being obliterated by a strat bomber and Gyle is busy casting a barren corner of the map examining the rock formations. (14:42) Love your casts bro, this was a fun one

I loved this cast, the south propeller was so exciting to watch! I loved the ww1 style battle there at 42:35, and it was fun to see experimentals go left and right as strategies change.. Great cast Gyle! Also great job on the mapgen for making this map.

Rising Star holding that bottom wedge alone with the comm for so long from the start of the game was awesome, then watching the top wedge hold against the orange cruisers until the yellow experimental bomber arrived was my next favourite. The winning team did a lot to support each other throughout the game, and prevent commander deaths.

Interesting fact, if I remember my cannon for this correctly from playing it back when it came out. All of the units and buildings are ai controlled. So the only lives to lose in a match, are the commander pilots.

I think the Support Commanders also have pilots. That's why you have to construct a Gateway to let them teleport in.

In my view the crucial point of contention was the bottom pond. Koiskix couldn't get his navy up fast enough despite starting first. RisingStar recognized the win condiction and put his entire economy on getting Navy dominance. The economy of top and bottom players was a timebomb waiting to happen and archsimkat took full advantage of it while Koiskix faltered. Intersting map.

25:00 onwards is some truly wonderful gameplay. When the teams are this closely matched you get a wonderful game. The passage of play between 32:00 and 40:00 was particularly fascinating. The fighter dances, the posturing, the shift to the middle missile base, the joint Seraphin experimental beach assault combined with T1 spam. 44:19 though had my head in my hands and was the moment I knew which team was going to finally win. What a crash :D

That reminds me of a match I've had in 2007 on Open Palms. I won because my T2 UEF artillery managed to land a luck shell in the enemy base, blowing up a chain of T3 Power/T3 Mass Makers. The balancing was different back then, T3 Mass Makers were super powerful and actually better than T3 Mexes, from what I remember. Good days.

Every step forward increases the damage it will receive, so it must do enough damage before it dies. Otherwise it just becomes a mass donation.

@@grovsey3656 Yeah I get that people don't want the thing to die immediately but a lot of the time I see dudes turn the thing around without enough HP to get to safety (especially not with a few bombers or gunships loitering) and the ion storm ends up being in the middle of nowhere or worse, on their own front line. Maybe they want to be able to scoop it for mass but in those situations I don;t see that happening at all.

@@bodesbodes9408 Also don't forget if your going up against a higher rated player, they can reclaim the chicken and stop the ion storm. If the entire attack depends on the ion storm doing huge damage. There would be very little reason to mass dono it.

Teams should really be in the general habit of deeding all their ASF's to a primary air defense player. When it comes time for the big aerial showdowns, having single coordinated control of the entire swarm is vital.

If they helped blue a little bit more early - maybe they wouldn't have had the issue with the lategame D-days. Also com hunting should have been priority with all those torp bombers. I think Team 1 was just better suited - Different factions and the Top player was almost alone vs. 2. Team 2 with just Seraphs... yeah. That's not the best composition.

He didn't. It's a bug with the notifications, where sometimes it will think it's a CTRL+K. He actually just got taken out by a T3 artillery hit and some collateral explosions.

@@dominickdesalvo8476 Mm looking at it in slow-mo that doesn't seem to be what happened. Misspoke originally, I assumed the Nuke was wifi's since he had the eco but it Was actually Paralons. Anyway The arty hit the nuke not the commander and was partially absorbed by a shield bringing it into the red. Paralon was standing south of the Nuke and is not hit by anything but just explodes at the same time as everything else. There is a t3 PP near the nuke that goes down which might have finished the nuke off but unless something changed since the last time I have seen one (which is a while admittedly) the Yolona isn't Volatile so it shouldn't have taken Paralon out with it. It really looks like Paralon just ctrl K (possibly prematurely) because he thought the nuke was dead and everyone else just followed along.

Those Hover tanks are pretty underpower and probably not worth the effort and resources to built them.

Hover tanks cost a lot and don't deal enough damage to be worth it plus you lose 50% of your hover tank army as it travels to the cruiser

They only had t2 shields on the yolona, the 2 t3 shields were not close enough. The single arty took the shields down and then the yolona. Once they lost the yolona they had no chance of winning so they surrendered.
