Voting party lines is pretty short sighted and tribal. But America has always been giving SC appointments to who ever is the sitting president, if the spot becomes vacant during their presidency. Its the way it works. I agree it does lead to circumstantial biases, entirely dependent on when Justices actually do retire. Past the elected leader part, its entirely timing based. But I am not sure the better solution, as for a country that has been intentionally polarized... Any form of appointment process is likely to result in a skewed political bias in one direction or the other. Its a case where the current system is obviously flawed... but a better solution really hasn't be established to resolve the problem.

I agree on all counts, I usually vote for the party with the least worst policies at the time, and our system is along similar lines. Here in the UK, our judiciary are selected by a non-partisan commission, which includes half a dozen retired judges amongst its members. They are selected on merit and integrity, never on party. The Lord Chancellor (an MP appointed by the queen to the post on the recommendation of the Prime Minister) appoints the commission's selection, but has very limited powers to reject one. We've only had a supreme court for about 15 years (I'm still not convinced it is a good idea having one!), the justices have to have previously been judges or experienced barristers etc.

You're correct that the U.S. President has certain defined duties and responsibilities, as outlined in the Constitution and other legal frameworks. However, committing a crime is not considered part of those duties. Therefore, if a President engages in criminal activities, they are not protected by presidential immunity for those actions. Problem with your proposition is the doctrine of the Separation of Powers under the U.S. Constitution. Separate but Equal - The Executive including the President (operates the laws), the Legislature (Congress, makes the laws) and the Judiciary (interprets the laws as passed by Congress). So if Congress passed laws governing the Supreme Court, the Supreme Court could interpret such laws as being "unconstitutional" and overturn them. Sort of like a legal Catch-22.
