Surcingle Training for Mules and Donkeys - Live Demonstration

The Surcingle is a wonderful training tool - it helps you train the mule to respect the halter / bridle and teaches them to frame themselves up when moving forward. The surcingle is the perfect tool for softening your animal - in a way that is natural to them.
We’re not doing lateral flexions, we’re not disengaging the hindquarters - what we’re doing is teaching them to listen to the halter / bridle using natural movement.
This training is vital before you get in the saddle because it teaches them to respect the halter / bridle communication - and when you get in the saddle, you’ll be able to communicate and in that way riding is much safer (though, riding is by nature always dangerous).
In this video Steve Edwards from Queen Valley Mule Ranch will show you, in real time, how to use the surcingle to lead your mule (or donkey). Watch him build a foundation and then go out and try it yourself!

Surcingle is sold by itself
The band is about 3” wide
The length is approximately 2 ½’ long
Beta is used across the top
Wool is used on the inside, fitting against the animal
You will need a cinch to connect the surcingle under the belly.
You can use any size cinch you want - whatever allows for the proper fit against the animal.

Three people called about his saddle but wanted it rigged for a tail crupper. Then the same three people called back within a month to admit they had broken their mule's back with a crupper. Cool story, pal, but the only thing I dislike more than tail cruppers are bull sh*t artists. I'd bet a lot more than chump change that I could set ol' Steve up with an experienced LE interviewer and that story would fold like a cheap suitcase. And anyone else notice how he turned a friendly, inquisitive mule into a mule that flinched and walked away with that harsh, utterly unnecessary kick? (Prick) My grandfather was the real Missouri deal when it came to mules, especially Percheron mule harness teams sold across the U.S., including repeat sales to the U.S. Army. I think he would have booted this sawed off hack into the dirt and taken a strap to him for that.

Howdy Judy, spent years watching how the lead mare communicates with the mule and tells him what to do. A small kick is nothing compared to the treatment the lead mare will pass along. My philosophy is to keep this animal out of my space because it's either the animal in the hospital or me in the hospital.

Hi Diana, A cruper is part for a wagon, but you also need a britchen. We talk about this around the 35 minute marker on a December 6 program.
