Best video of explaining where I'm going wrong... kept getting wipeout or nosedive as I'm catching waves at the wrong time. Thanks!

Thanks Bryan. Timing is maybe the most vital element in all of surfing and vision around you is the key to getting that timing information. If you get further problems just send me a question and do check out www.surfschoolanzarote.com/ and www.surfschoolsrilanka.com/ and we hope you spend time with us one day
@joesurfer97546 жыл бұрын
It has a lot do with the wave period and how you trim your body on your board when paddling also. I often literally surf where Kelly slater surfed as a kid in small low period swell. if you got hard off shores, you need to pearl your Board on purpose to catch the wave and when the wave jacks up, your nose will pop out of the wave face about the time you jump up. (10 foot nose rider). then you stay low for better wind resistance or set your rail and run up to the nose weighting the inside rail. If you can figure out the magic trim spot on your board, you can catch any wave with two paddles. In a 14 second wave you are going to trim different than a 9 second wave when paddling into it. Watch what the quiet hot dog surfer does who does not talk much and copy him.

The more I surf the more I could understand better... I just did my two lessons surf and watching this made me realize my mistake better! I’ve always been so scared to get passed through the breaking waves and always struggling to paddle pass but knowing the wave stages made me realize that I need to get pass the breaking wave in order to be at the 45 degree zone or a little more in front of the bump... The last part of the wave illustration using the sand is really helpful! Thank you! Can’t wait to practice this!

Thanks for the instruction. I paddle surf but went out on a longboard last week and had trouble finding the sweet spot to catch the waves. I was getting frustrated and exhausted from using so much energy trying to catch the "unbroken" waves. Your analogy about paddling hard to plane the board like a water ski was spot on. I now realize that was my problem, well at least one of them. I was the one paddling slow and then when feeling the wave I would paddle hard. Exactly the opposite of your instruction. Thanks again. Can't wait to get back out there and make those changes.

body position on the board is also important. too many beginners are too far forwards or too far back. the nose should barely be out of the water. also you had the perfect chance to explain identifying peaks in the sand demonstration. iSURFTRIBE is the only channel that explains peak identification and when to go left or right. also no one explains the relationship between arching ones back and chin down paddling and steepness of waves. less steep, mushy waves require chin down power paddles. steep hollow waves require arched back, thighs pressed, knees together corking effect. another thing about your sand demonstration is that it doesn't go into the left and right dimension. most of us aren't surfing perfect A- frame reefs or points. you have to paddle left and right as well as front to back in the ocean on beach break to find peaks. peaks are crucial to surfing unbroken waves.
@SurfInsight7 жыл бұрын
Hi Conner. Those are good points and we are going to explain peak identification and paddling for peaks in future videos. I dont like the fact that we didn't have real footage to show that but we were concentrating on physics of the skill and will do in future vids But your right. However we shot a video recently explaining just what you say about the chest height being used to good affect in different wave scenarios. I really like Surf Tribe its good stuff .. hope they done stop as one of their posts recently said they might. Thanks for your input.

Staggeringly and undisputupidly ( of the MANY videos I have seen) by far and away the best, in a class entirely of it's own, of surf instructional video's. I propose a prize for great instructional vids-this should get FIRST PRIZE. Listen, one fascinating truth it displays about the nature of life, experience and learning is this; You can't beat time! That's a much needed lesson in the modern fast pace, 'gimme now' instant gratification world. In a world; 'Eldership.' Not 'elderly' but 'Elder' in the case of that relatively rare, nowadays, individual who has continued in their studies lifelong for decades; as in; "I am a master who teaches a disciple who learns," and thereby is a repository of knowledge that NO ONE younger can match. The depth, the detail, the clarity, the understanding is just NOT THERE CLEARLY in ANY of the many other instructional video's I have watched;simply put the people concerned may surf unbelievably well, but so much is intuitive that they CAN"T explain and simply DON'T understand how they do it! Again and again you see surfers who may be able to do an 'air reverse' but can't teach anywhere near like this...this is awesome. I have to say, well, maybe my review gets me a free lesson, cos I sure need it! I took up surfing aged around 53 during the year I was waiting for a double hip replacement and could no way jump up freely, I couldn't even tie my shoe laces by myself often enough...but flexibility is returning and sure I'll pay for a lesson, I value this instruction as the BEST. Thank you so much keep going strong.

I do know that I will be back in the water one day and I'm so lucky to have that goal to drive me on. Thanks again

Hi again, Tim. Just left a comment on "Rules of Surfing". I really enjoyed how you used the sand as a 3-Dal blackboard! VERY clear and clever! I've started surfing with a 8' mini Mal, and, as I get better, I plan on keep surfing surfboards 8' and up (really fond of classic longboard surfing here). I've been watching TONS of videos, and it seems to me that some surfers, when they're catching/riding waves, use their back foot to control the turns, while others use the front foot. Am I mistaken? Does it depend if the surfer is regular or goofy (I'm a goofy, btw)? I'd also really appreciate if you could show us how to use the feet to quickly turn the surfboard (for both goofy and regular) right after the jump up. About the hands position on the pop up: I think in one of your videos you say you're not fond of placing them one more forward than the other, but always keeping both hands right near the chest. So, for turning, is it all about looking at where you're going and using your feet - or using the hands also helps? Btw, should we always be slightly in an angle when we catch the wave? Thanks once more!

Getting used to riding a ripstick isn't very good for surfing because turning the board is the complete opposite of turning a ripstick. However it's the same as a skateboard I am an experienced young surfer so I know this

how do you get over that fear of unbroken waves ive catched white waters enough and even though the waves arent big I hold myself back from catching them because of my fear of how big they seem in the water when they really are 3 ft
@SurfInsight6 жыл бұрын
So there are a few things to do that can get over fear . Firstly of course try to use waves that are not super scary for you. Look across the wave to where you would want to turn to go across it and not straight in front of you as that " looking down the drop " can make you afraid. Use a count of a quick 1234, 1234, 1234, for your paddle strokes to focus on that and take away fear .. hope some of those things help
@MisterTMH6 жыл бұрын
Learning to body surf before taking up surfing on a board can help you read the surf better and helps with timing.
@SurfInsight6 жыл бұрын
Thats such a good bit of advice and we do teach a bit of body surfing to those with fear .. great and gives tons more confidence
@SurfInsight6 жыл бұрын
Its a common problem and there are some tips that can help .. firstly .. breath when out the back waiting for your waves 3 breaths in just a couple of seconds and 5 breaths out .. there is some solid science behind this with your sympathetic nervous system and your para sympathetic nervous system... sounds weird but will calm you down and I will attach a link to this. But.. in the act of paddling for the wave .. look across the wave and not down into what you perceive is a big drop .. but as you say it isn't.... look across the wave to where you want to go .. which is across .. and very importantly use strong and committed first paddle stokes and you can use a quick 1234 .. 1234 .. 1234 count to do this. Giving your mind the job of counting , like breathing in mediation will give the " worrying thinking " part of the brain a job to do and will take away , with practise, from the fear . So of course it takes time to get over fear but the breathing , count and cross the wave vision will help a lot ... tell me how you go with that Joe . We hope we get to coach you one day at one of our schools www.surfschoolanzarote.com or www.surfschoolsrilanka.com but do ask any coaching questions you may have of course. And do check www.diffen.com/difference/Parasympathetic_nervous_system_vs_Sympathetic_nervous_system
@joesurfer97546 жыл бұрын
It's called the eebbie jeebies dude. It sucks. best way to get rid of it is to prey to god to give you courage when your out in the lineup and then charge into wAVES. It works. eventually you will build your courage up. Another thing that helps is to get a skinny girlfriend and paddle out tandem in big waves. Hook the leash to her leg so she don't die. When you get way out there in big waves, jump off the board and swim to the beach on your back backwards. Take your time. Swim slow. Eventually you will be able to go into hurricane waves with no leash and not even think twice about it plus you will get to bang a hot, skinny beach chick.
@alessandrocordioli2286 жыл бұрын
hi!congratulations for your videos! I wanted to ask you for advice ... I often fail the take off because instead of letting me get carried away by the wave I descend it gaining too much speed and I cant get up on the board or if I can I'm already far from the wave.According to you what could be the reason? maybe I stay with the weight too far forward and not arching back?thanks
@SurfInsight6 жыл бұрын
Hi Alessandro .. It quite hard to know what the issue is for you without seeing it as that description is kind of difficult to understand .. you may be looking forward too much and not across the wave or looking down , or holding the rails Hope we see you at www.surfschoolsrilanka.com/ and www.surfschoolanzarote.com/ and do check our Insta instagram.com/surfschools..
