I’m learning to surf also. One thing I’m having trouble with is positioning and angling my board enough so I’ll pearl sometimes. Kinda difficult timing these beach breaks on the gulf also lol. My pop ups are pretty decent though so figured maybe I can offer pretty much the only advice I can. That is that you go to your back knee and then stand up. You don’t have to do that step. What I do, and seen a bunch of people do is basically make a banana shape and do a push up then basically just suck my legs under me. This is advice from a total beginner who sucks at surfing though 😂

Funny. I've been surfing for 35 years and I've never liked trying to surf and trying to converse at the same time. Some people seem to be able to pull it off, but I feel that surfing and conversing both suffer when you attempt to do both at the same time. Hence, I am pretty quiet when I surf. I love to say hi, how ya doing, good morning, what a nice day, great wave, good to see you, woohoo (and all that fun easy encouragement), but I usually save the bigger part of socializing for when I'm on shore. Just a personal observation and preference. Surfing is definitely addictive. I was good for about 25 - 30 years, stoked, having fun and then came along a period of diminishing returns. I surf way less now than when I was a newbie and I'm ok with it. There are lots of ways to enjoy life. Enjoy yourself and the water and all it has to offer!!! Best wishes.

Dude, I have the same exact surf fears as you! I always hesitate when I look back at the wave when I am paddling and I have an overwhelming fear of getting in peoples way. I come from a surfing family, but took a long break and am trying to get back into it in my 20s. I love the ocean but it can be so humbling and unforgiving. I will definitely be re-watching your video before a sesh so I can remind myself to take a breath and just have fun : ^ ) Alsoooo, what size is your board? It's super cute : D

You’re doing so good!! Can’t wait to watch your progression :) I used my knee forever - try to break that habit and practice popping up on dry land whenever you can and you’ll get that muscle memory going. There is a super helpful pop-up video that goes in depth about using your hips when you pop up. I’ve never seen another video explain it like that. Also, when you’re at home - stretching by sitting in a butterfly position will open up your hips and that will help your pop-up as well. I’ll see if I can link that hip-swivel pop up vid! kzbin.info/www/bejne/nXyUZmSrjr6Vaa8si=R0Sftll2mBy2rwuR
