@SomeGadgetGuy I see that Snapdragon X users are able to find their NPU listed on task manager -> performance. However, I don't see such an NPU on my Robo & Kala task manager, and as such do not know if the R&K actually has the NPU active. Can you confirm whether yours is showing up on your Robo & Kala?

Ha! I remember back when I was in University studying Computer Science in 2002 that the RISC/ARM was being touted as the future of computing within the next decade. Tech bros have been dragging their heels on ARM for a lot more than 5 years.

Oh I know it. Even back to the dialog in the movie Hackers. I've just felt that its in the last seven years (specifically with the Snapdragon 845), we've seen phone chips that are grossly overpowered for communication devices. The core config of an 855 is still being used today in low cost chromebooks and tablets.

Before jumping into the X-Elite, I would research as multiple issues are now popping up. My deal-breakers, for now, include VPN apps not working, old accessory hardware (e.g. printers) having no ARM drivers and Google Drive not working (not as good using the website), no native app and emulation not being possible. These bumps in the road happened with Apple Silicon, but of course, they are now four years into the game, so they have a distinct advantage. So, if you want ARM, buy a Mac or wait for a few months. If I were a Windows fan, I would wait for the upcoming Intel and AMD ultrabook chips that look equal to or better than the X-Elite in every regard and hopefully have more exciting designs.

I actually got this same model. 64GB of RAM, 15inch. Been loving it so far. Pricey, yeah, but I'm hoping to use this laptop to get some extra video editing done outside my workstation at home (and also, do more color grading and motion gfx, which I read up that I'd need at least 32GBs, 64GBs min to handle serious color work). So far so good in terms of editing performance, while the fans go anywhere between tame to decently loudish (but not insane). This is awesome. My comic script writing software works, and I mostly just use Microsoft apps from there, so pretty good on the app front on my end. The only thing I wish, is that Blackmagic resolve some bugs and gets Resolve 19 out of beta soon. I didn't know about the depth map issue, but I have an issue where switching over to Fusion to work on a clip, the clip just isn't visible in Fusion (I'd have to render out the timeline, place the play head at frame 0, go to Fusion, hit play on the keyboard to get the images to EVENTUALLY show up). As someone who prefers Resolve to be my primary editing software, I'd love for everything to work. At least the software mostly runs well, otherwise.

@brianmannell9754 3 ай бұрын
@SacrificiaLamb.The.Gixxerator Others can chime in, but I think 16GB of RAM is a good start. 8... You'd probably be stretching it, but I think that's the minimum requirements for Premiere? Still, 16 would be better. Resolve I think is recommended to have 16GB as well. But see what others think, and do some more research online when able. Just to be sure the amount of RAM fits for how much you wish to do (on top of cpu/gpu tech you may need, which is important as well). 👍 😊

Juan, I would have thought you would have gone for the new Surface Pro over the Surface Laptop... I really enjoyed your first day of reviewing it. You covered a lot for one day vs nearly all the ASUS Vivobook S15 reviews, where they got the test units a week early and just put out fluff pieces. Looking forward to what you have coming next! I will say that, while I totally understand why you went after an ARM laptop, I think your money would have been better spent waiting another month to get an AMD Strix Point laptop; it will have double the Tops performance, and it will be about 77% faster then the current AMD Hawk Point laptops that already trounce these Qualcomm laptops in performance. I think they will have equally impressive performance/watt as well. Anyway, v one last thing... , I hate one drive! Lol.

Second day almost finished. Upgraded my SSD yesterday from 256Gb to 1Tb (considering MS also charges huge pricing - I saved CAD $550) and used the difference to upgrade to a two year ADP subscription. The SSD was 142 CAD so overall great pricing. This machine was the same value as the M3 MacBook Air which was in the running, but I like to try out the latest toys. The 15" is the one to go to for me, with the 12 Cores it seems to do a little better on the cooling. The only thing I can say is that there are a lot SKUs and finding the X12 with 80100 is like stepping in quick sand.

There are a few takeaways here. 1. Finally Windows on arm, or ARM on Windows, has proper OS, hardware and app support. I'll like to see a trip down the memory lane and comparisons of previous attempts (like Surface RT, SP9/X, and now SPSXE). I'll like to see the comparisons. 2. I think the conversation about RAM will gradually change. It already is a talking point in Steam Deck users, and I suspect the moment the GPU and NPU starts to fully utilise (I don't see the GPU and NPU will use their own memory banks, because I think they'll all use the same pool of RAM accessible) all the hardware power available to them, eventually no matter what optimization is done, consumers and manufacturers will arrive at the precipice of 8GB RAM conversation, and maybe even 16GB RAM conversations, for day to day use and even gaming. 3. The pricing from the OEMS will decide how the future lays out for potential buyers. Microsoft's pricing seems to me, really going for the jugular against some non Microsoft competition, so it will be interesting to see what is going to happen on the software front. 4. Intel and AMD, who are the champions and bastions of x86, will need to work very hard. ARM is really eating into their lunch (power per watt). AMD cannot rely on gaming, and Intel cannot rely on being the "old reliable". Both should have seen the serious threat from miles away, but for low end PC and low end pricing ARM will really eat into both Intel and AMD's lunch if the the pricing for specs is great for sub 1000 USD market. 5. Great takeaway, as usual. Like hearing you approach the device on "What's it about, who's its for" vs going spec for spec reading then commentary.

1. I'm going to do a comparison against last gen Snapdragons first, but I want to try and get my OLD RT tablet up and running again. 2. It already is. This laptop will assign up to 32GB of RAM from the system pool depending on application. That SHOULD help Resolve edit larger phone files like 8K clips. Resolve still needs a LOT of polish though. 3. It's pricey yeah. I get they want to have a prestige product, and leave plenty of room for their other partners, but it's a tough recommend. It's tight when this was literally the ONLY system offering this much RAM. I have to believe that when MediaTek and AMD also make their ARM options, we'll see system pricing get even more competitive. 4. It's exciting to see Intel HAS been taking this more seriously, and Lunar Lake looks like it'll be REALLY good. We just wouldn't be getting there if Apple hadnt embarrassed Intel first, and if Microsoft hadn't shoved Intel out of the way to work with Qualcomm. That's why real competition is so critical in this space. 5. Glad you enjoyed it. This video has been A LONG time coming 😊

I think the issues with GFX on ARM will go away a bit with other players in the market, when Qualcomm's exclusivity deal runs out. Even if it's just MediaTek, they'll be more OK with someone else providing GFX. And if nVidia, AMD and even Intel get into the ARM game...

Honestly, it's mostly what I expected in performance and battery wise, I was hoping for better performance on graphics, especially regarding the price, but it's still very competitive. For the moment this is a killer SoC for anyone that needs a long battery life and good general performance, kind of like the prefect competition for the Mac Book air, perfect for most students, writers... almost everyone except those who want to game, do a lot of editing or other graphic intensive tasks like modelling, etc. If they are able to improve fast on the graphics department, they really could be the new champion against anything Mac, and things are getting more interesting considering the Rumor that Nvidia is also working on this, and let's not sleep on Intel's Lunar lake, very exciting for laptops

This was better review than Vivo book s15 and i was disappointed with thermals and battery life. I do think this 15 inches surface has better scores than competitors. Lack of pen compatibility is a deal breaker though when earlier releases did just fine. Would love to hear quality of speakers. At the price point i would take up strix point and nvidia RTX GPU for super fast renders. Coming from GTX 980 to RTX should be a game changer And GTX struggled with bunch of resolve and custom plugin effects. Atleast this time surface laptop aren't reaching 100C on turbo boost. Although i would have like to see the ultimate AMD CPU based surface. It's not that arm chip lacks power rather I'm concerned with reliability of doing daily video render, OBS captures, gaming, coding and basic photo edit. One more thing i want to add is my Pixel 7 renders my video with better effects and high bit rate faster than my PC only for short time period and performance tanks when you reach 45C

Tomorrow is the last day of the two week payout window they said it might take. You'd think their logistics would be better by now. They had a month to figure it out. I think it's all in good shape, and we see distinct pros and cons. Video editing is literally Resolve, in BETA, having delivered this a week ago LOL. And gaming is better than I was expecting given the GPU performing closer to a 13th Gen Intel iGPU. That can only improve as we get more arm support and better GPU drivers. Where we're starting here, we're in pretty good shape.

How much RAM is allocated to the NPU? Someone on reddit with the 16GB model posted a screenshot with Task Manager showing the NPU uses 8GB of RAM. But I don't know if it's a fixed amount or if it's actually 50% of system memory so allocation is higher with more RAM.
@SomeGadgetGuy

When not under load, Windows "sees" the GPU and NPU as having half the available system RAM. I haven't found a great way to test using both to the point where there might be a resources conflict.

I have the 15", 16GB version that I received yesterday. Initially I had issues with the Windows 11 setup where it was giving me errors with the EULA and would not let me get past. It was initially frustrated and contacted Microsoft Support. They were very quick in responding. They had me do a hard reset (pressing the power button for 20 seconds) and restart the process. It did work. After, they did want me to go to the MS Store and install surface diagnostic tools, but it would not run and it is because of the ARM processor. They included that in their notes :) Now I am trying to find out how to incorporate CoPilot+ into my work like Word and other tasks. But I am LOVING this laptop.

I heard that part of the deals behind MS ploughing so much marketing, advertising and deals (pricing and freebies) was that the bootloader is locked to Windows. Is this true? Has anyone managed to partition the drive and put Linux on? If true, we must wait for Qualcomm to strike a deal with MS to allow them to use other OSes. Maybe MS has insisted on an exclusive period. We know Qualcomm and MS have struck these types of deals before, where they prevent other chipmakers from putting Windows on ARM. If true, and this was Apple, then there would be uproar. I suspect creators will not even confirm this and will make excuses if correct. We know they have not mentioned the security issues of MS Pluton, which Qualcomm uses. If this exploit was an Apple problem, there would be many flexes by creators.
